International investors can buy Thai-listed shares through a Thai brokerage account, but access is not automatic: each broker decides whether it accepts applicants from a particular country and offers remote account opening. Before applying, decide whether you want a Thai company’s local share line, its foreign share line (-F), or an NVDR (-R); these can carry different rights. Then confirm the broker’s eligibility rules, account costs, funding and settlement process, and the tax treatment that applies where you live.
Can an international investor buy Thai stocks?
For direct access to shares listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), the exchange’s investor guide describes opening an account with a Thai brokerage firm, funding it, and placing orders through the broker’s online system or an investment consultant. The guide does not establish that every brokerage accepts applicants who live abroad, so eligibility must be confirmed with the broker.
Start with the SET member broker list, then ask candidate firms whether they accept residents of your country, allow remote onboarding, and can trade the specific Thai share line you want. If you mean Thai exposure through an international-market product rather than direct ownership of a Thai-listed share, clarify that distinction before choosing an account or instrument.
How to open a Thai brokerage account
SET’s guide lists a passport, bank-account evidence and a six-month bank statement among the documents for foreign applicants; a work permit is also listed if the applicant works in Thailand. Requirements and account-opening methods can vary by broker, especially for nonresidents, so obtain the current checklist directly from the firm.

- Fund and place orders. Once the account is approved and funded, the exchange guide describes entering orders through the broker’s online system or with an investment consultant.
Choose the right Thai share line
A company may have different trading lines on SET. Check the quote and security information for the exact line rather than assuming that all lines confer the same rights. Foreign ownership limits and the available room can vary by security; ask the broker to confirm current availability and trading liquidity.
| Instrument | What it represents | Rights and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Local shares | The local trading line on SET. | SET says foreign holders of local shares do not receive dividends or voting rights. Confirm the line and its terms for the security. |
| Foreign shares (-F) | A foreign trading line in the company’s shares. | SET says foreign shares carry dividend and voting rights. Foreign ownership limits apply; check the security’s current foreign holding information and liquidity. |
| NVDRs (-R) | Non-voting depositary receipts designed to facilitate foreign investment despite foreign ownership limits. | Thai NVDR says holders receive financial benefits similar to the underlying shares but no voting rights. Check availability and the current rules for the security. |
| Thai depositary receipts (DRs) | SET-listed, Thai-baht instruments representing foreign securities. | These provide indirect exposure to foreign underlying assets; they are not ownership of Thai operating-company shares. |
What an NVDR does—and does not—provide
An NVDR is not a voting share. Thai NVDR describes the instrument as a way to facilitate foreign investment where ownership limits may constrain direct foreign-share purchases. The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said its 2024 rule changes were intended to keep NVDR services aligned with that purpose and prevent Thai investors from using them to evade rules. Review the current NVDR rules and confirm that the instrument is available for the security you want.

Understand funding, fees and settlement before trading
SET’s investor guide describes cash-account trades as settling T+2, or two business days after the trade date. Settlement practices and instrument-specific arrangements should be verified with your broker. Ask how and when you must provide funds, what currency the account uses, how currency conversion is handled, and what happens if a payment or settlement is delayed.
- Trading commission and any minimum commission
- Minimum account balance and minimum order size
- Funding and withdrawal methods, eligible currencies and conversion charges
- Settlement timing and any instrument-specific arrangements
- Costs or terms associated with cash, cash-balance or credit/margin accounts
What international investors should know about Thai taxes
SET states that individual investors’ capital gains from direct investment in SET or TFEX are tax-exempt in Thailand, and that dividends are generally subject to 10% withholding at source. These are Thai tax statements, not a complete calculation of an international investor’s tax bill. Your tax residence, whether you invest as an individual or entity, treaty eligibility and your home country’s rules may affect the result.

Before investing, ask the broker how dividends are paid and withheld, what tax statements it provides, and whether it can support treaty documentation. For your overall obligations, check guidance relevant to your tax jurisdiction or consult a qualified tax professional.
