If a furniture store closes before delivering your order, save every transaction record, send the seller a written request for a refund or a firm delivery resolution, and contact your payment provider promptly. If you paid by credit card, a written billing-error notice may have a short deadline. Also check whether the retailer actually filed bankruptcy: a closed store is not proof of a bankruptcy case, and a card dispute and a bankruptcy claim are separate processes.
1. Save the records that show what you bought and what was promised
Gather copies of your signed sales contract or order confirmation, item description, price, promised delivery date, receipt, payment statement, financing or buy now, pay later (BNPL) agreement, and messages about delays, cancellation, or closure. Write down the dates and names associated with calls, and keep copies of any letters or online submissions. These records can help explain a payment dispute and support a complaint or court claim. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends collecting records such as receipts, contracts, and statements when trying to resolve a business problem (FTC guidance on resolving problems with a business).
2. Ask the seller for a refund or a specific delivery resolution
Use the official contact information on your order, receipt, store website, or closure notice. Write to the seller and request a refund to your original payment method or a firm resolution for delivery; save proof of the request. If an official notice identifies a parent company, successor retailer, or administrator, send a copy there too. Do not assume an unverified company or contact is legally responsible for your order.
If you ordered remotely
For most orders placed online, by phone, or by mail, the FTC’s merchandise rule generally requires the seller to ship within the promised time, or within 30 days if no shipping time was stated. If the seller cannot ship on time, the rule generally requires it to offer a delay option or a cancellation and full refund in covered situations. The FTC says a seller that does not ship must provide a full refund, not merely store credit or a gift card (FTC guidance on merchandise you never received). This rule generally concerns remote orders; do not assume it applies to a purchase made in person at a store.

3. If you paid by credit card, contact the issuer now
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says being charged for merchandise you did not receive or accept may qualify as a billing error. To preserve the Fair Credit Billing Act billing-error process, send written notice to the card issuer’s billing-disputes address within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge was sent. Call or use the issuer’s online process as well if useful, but CFPB guidance emphasizes written notice. Keep a copy of your letter and proof of delivery (CFPB guidance on credit-card refunds and billing errors).
Do not wait for the store to reopen or for a bankruptcy case to be confirmed before contacting your issuer. The 60-day period is tied to the first statement with the charge, not to the date you learned the store closed. Ask the issuer how it wants you to submit supporting records and follow its instructions.

If you have not paid the full amount
CFPB guidance describes a possible right to withhold the remaining amount on a qualifying credit-card purchase. The conditions include making a good-faith effort to resolve the issue with the seller, buying in your home state or within 100 miles of your current billing address, a purchase price greater than $50, and a balance that has not been fully paid. These conditions are specific; they do not automatically cover every card, purchase, or financing arrangement. Ask the issuer about your situation before withholding payment (CFPB credit-card guidance).
4. If you used debit, store financing, or BNPL, ask that provider about its process
Contact the bank, card issuer, lender, or BNPL provider promptly and report that the furniture was not delivered. Ask how to dispute the transaction, what documents it requires, and whether any deadlines apply to your account. Debit-card protections differ from credit-card billing-error protections, and a refund may not be available. Third-party BNPL rights also differ from protections for a purchase charged directly to a credit card (FTC guidance on missing merchandise; CFPB credit-card guidance).

Check the relevant account agreement and do not stop required payments solely because the store closed. Ask the creditor what to do while the non-delivery dispute is reviewed.
5. Check whether the retailer filed bankruptcy
A closed storefront or website does not establish that the company filed bankruptcy. Look for an official notice, search the relevant bankruptcy court’s case information using the business’s exact legal name, or consult a qualified bankruptcy attorney. If you find a case, use its notice to verify the debtor, case number, and deadlines; follow the instructions in that notice.

Official Form 410 is used to make a claim for payment in a bankruptcy case. The form’s instructions call for supporting records, which may include purchase orders, invoices, and contracts (U.S. Courts: Proof of Claim (Official Form 410)). Whether you need to file a proof of claim, and whether a claim will receive any distribution, depends on the case. A bankruptcy claim is not the same as a credit-card dispute, so pursue the relevant processes separately and track their separate requirements.

| Situation | Practical next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Online, phone, or mail order | Check the promised shipping date and contact the seller in writing about cancellation, refund, or a delay resolution. | The FTC merchandise rule generally covers remote orders, not necessarily purchases made in-store. |
| Credit card | Contact the issuer and send written billing-error notice to its disputes address. | The general 60-day notice period runs from when the first statement showing the charge was sent. |
| Debit card | Contact the bank or card issuer promptly and ask about its non-delivery dispute process. | Protections differ from credit-card protections; a refund may not be available. |
| Store financing or third-party BNPL | Contact the named lender or provider and review the account agreement and dispute procedure. | Do not assume credit-card billing-error protections apply to a separate financing obligation. |
| Bankruptcy case | Read the case notice, collect purchase records, and meet any applicable court deadlines. | Whether a proof of claim is required and whether payment is made depend on the case. |
7. Escalate if the seller or payment provider does not resolve it
Contact your state attorney general or consumer-protection office to ask about complaint or dispute-resolution options. The FTC identifies state offices as a consumer resource, but procedures and legal remedies vary by state (FTC guidance on problems with purchases). The outcome may depend on your state, transaction details, payment method, and any bankruptcy case; no particular refund or recovery is guaranteed.
