Re:

Are Furniture Store Gift Cards and Store Credit Still Valid After a Closure?

A gift card may still work after one furniture store closes, but a full shutdown or bankruptcy can put redemption at risk. The balance type and state law matter.

Possibly—but it depends on whether one location closed or the retailer shut down, what kind of balance you hold, and the law that applies. A gift card may still work at another store or online after a showroom closes. If the whole business closes or enters bankruptcy, an unused balance can become difficult or impossible to redeem even if the card has not expired.

What happens when a furniture store closes?

A closed location does not automatically mean a gift card is worthless. If the retailer still operates elsewhere or online, it may continue accepting the balance. Ask the retailer where redemption is available rather than assuming the card works chain-wide—or assuming it no longer works. Michigan’s consumer guidance recommends contacting the retailer and checking again if it is not currently accepting cards; it also notes that competitors may sometimes honor them, but that is not guaranteed. Michigan Attorney General: Gift Cards.

If the entire company has stopped operating, redemption may be much less likely. Oregon’s Department of Justice cautions that a local closure or bankruptcy may make a card unusable regardless of its expiration date. Oregon Department of Justice: Gift Cards.

Does bankruptcy change the answer?

It can. Bankruptcy or a court-supervised closing process may affect whether, when, and where a retailer accepts gift cards or credits. The relevant case notices and deadlines matter, so do not rely only on the card’s printed terms or an old store policy. If you know bankruptcy has been filed, look for current official notices for that case and act within any stated deadlines.

State law can also matter. California’s Attorney General says California law requires businesses to honor gift certificates even if they file bankruptcy; this is a California-specific statement, not a nationwide guarantee. California Attorney General: Gift Cards. New York’s General Business Law § 396-i addresses acceptance of gift certificates and store credit during closing-out or defunct-business sales, as well as changes to terms after issuance. Its conditions apply to New York cases, not automatically to other states. New York General Business Law § 396-i.

Is store credit the same as a gift card?

Not necessarily. The label on the balance does not settle what rules apply. A purchased, fixed-value gift card, credit issued for returned merchandise, promotional credit, and a deposit for furniture that has not been delivered can be different kinds of transactions.

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
  • Purchased gift card: You paid for a card or balance. Federal Regulation E defines covered gift certificates and store gift cards and includes requirements and exclusions. Its expiration protections do not guarantee that a closed merchant can or will redeem the balance. 12 CFR § 1005.20, Regulation E.
  • Return credit or credit memo: This may be treated differently from a purchased gift card. Florida’s statute, for example, defines a “credit memo” to include an instrument issued in exchange for returned merchandise and addresses credit memos and gift certificates issued in the state. The Florida text illustrates why the instrument’s type matters; it does not determine rights in other states. Florida Statutes § 501.95.
  • Promotional credit: Its terms and the rules that govern it may differ from those for a card purchased for money. Check the written terms and applicable state law.
  • Deposit on undelivered furniture: A deposit for an order is not automatically a gift-card balance. Keep the order documents and payment records, and ask the seller or payment provider about options if the goods were not delivered.

What should you do now?

  1. Check whether the retailer still operates. Visit its website or contact customer service or another open location. Ask specifically whether the balance works in-store, online, at another branch, or with a successor or acquiring company.
  2. Confirm what kind of balance you have. Check whether it was purchased, issued for a return, offered as a promotion, or paid as a deposit on an order. Keep the terms, receipt, order documents, and card or electronic balance information.
  3. Ask about current acceptance and keep the response. Save emails, chat transcripts, and screenshots. If the retailer says it is not accepting the balance, check periodically for a policy change; acceptance may resume. A competitor might honor a card, but you should confirm directly rather than count on it.
  4. Check the law and any case deadlines. Identify the state relevant to the transaction and consult its current consumer-protection guidance or attorney general’s consumer office. If bankruptcy is involved, review the case’s official notices for deadlines and instructions.
  5. If you paid by credit card for furniture that was never delivered, contact the issuer promptly. North Carolina’s Attorney General advises consumers to ask their card issuer about a possible chargeback when a store closes after a credit-card purchase. A dispute or chargeback is not guaranteed; eligibility and deadlines depend on the transaction and issuer. North Carolina Department of Justice: Credit Card Chargebacks.

Why you should not rely on the expiration date alone

An expiration date and a merchant’s ability to redeem a balance are separate issues. Federal rules for covered gift cards address expiration, but they do not make a defunct retailer operational. Oregon’s guidance specifically warns that a local closure or bankruptcy may leave a card unusable before its printed expiration date. Check both the card’s terms and the retailer’s current status.

Keep records in case you need to dispute the balance

Save the physical or electronic card, receipts, purchase or return terms, screenshots showing the balance, order documents, communications with the retailer, and any closure or bankruptcy notices. Record when and where you tried to redeem it and what response you received. Those details can help when contacting the retailer, a state consumer office, or—if the original transaction involved a credit-card payment for goods not delivered—the card issuer.

State examples are not nationwide rules

The California, New York, and Florida sources above address different instruments and circumstances. They are examples of why the result can vary, not a survey of every state’s law. For an individual balance, the key details are the retailer, the state, the type of credit, whether the business still operates, and whether a bankruptcy or formal closing process is underway.
