Prediction markets and sportsbooks can offer exposure to the same sports outcome, but they price and settle it differently. In a prediction market, participants buy or sell event contracts at market prices; a sportsbook posts odds and accepts wagers under its own terms. To compare them, look at the actual payout after costs, the price and availability of an early exit, the settlement rules, and the laws that apply where you are—not just the number on the screen.
How the two products work
Prediction-market event contracts
A sports event contract specifies an outcome and the conditions under which it settles. A yes/no contract may trade between $0 and $1. Its price is often read as an implied probability shorthand: a contract trading at $0.60 suggests a market price equivalent to 60 cents per dollar of payout if the event resolves “yes.” That is a price, not a guarantee that the outcome has a 60% chance of occurring.
Customers trade with other participants through a platform or exchange. The price can move as orders arrive and beliefs change. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes prediction-market contracts as contracts participants buy and sell based on whether stated events occur in its March 16, 2026 notice.
Sportsbook wagers
A sportsbook offers odds on an outcome and sets the payout terms for a wager. The customer places a bet against the sportsbook under its rules; the sportsbook’s quoted odds determine the offered return. Odds formats vary, so compare what a particular stake would return rather than assuming a displayed number maps directly to a prediction-market price.

How to compare odds and payouts
Use the same outcome and the same amount of money at risk. A useful first step is to distinguish the amount paid to enter a contract from the amount that could be paid out if it wins.
- Prediction-market illustration: If a hypothetical yes contract costs $0.60 and pays $1 if it settles yes, a winning contract returns $1 gross, including the $0.60 entry cost; the gross profit is $0.40 before any fees. If it settles no, the contract’s payout is zero and the $0.60 entry cost is lost, before any fees.
- Sportsbook comparison: Start with the sportsbook’s stated payout for the same stake and outcome, then account for the bet terms and any explicit charges. The quoted odds determine the offered payout; they are not an exchange-traded contract price.
For either product, calculate the net result after all charges and compare the possible gain with the amount at risk. Prediction-market prices are not necessarily well-calibrated probabilities: calibration can vary by product and time to expiry. A 2026 working paper by Niusha Moshrefi analyzed 23 million moneyline trades across major sports leagues on Kalshi and reported time-to-expiry-related differences in probability calibration. That is a study-specific sample and finding, not a market-wide accuracy measure or a direct comparison with sportsbook odds. Read the paper.
Fees and the real cost of a position
There is no supported universal rule that prediction markets are cheaper—or more expensive—than sportsbooks. Prediction-market customers may pay exchange commissions, transaction fees, or other platform charges. A sportsbook’s cost may be reflected in the odds it offers and can also depend on bet terms or explicit charges. Comparing a visible transaction fee with a sportsbook’s odds alone misses part of the price.

On a prediction market, a customer may be able to trade out before settlement at the then-current market price, as the CFTC explains. That price may have moved against the position, and there may not be enough liquidity to sell at the price a customer wants. Exiting can therefore lock in a loss, and the ability to place an order is not a promise of a fair or profitable exit.
A sportsbook’s cash-out option depends on the sportsbook and the particular bet. If available, its offered amount is also a new price to assess, not a guarantee that the original stake can be recovered. For either product, check whether an exit is actually available and what amount it would return before relying on it.

Settlement rules can change the result
The outcome label alone is not enough to establish what will be paid. A prediction-market contract’s wording, payout conditions, and settlement method—and who determines settlement—matter. A sportsbook’s house rules govern its wager. Read the exact rules for the specific market or bet, especially where a game is postponed, statistics are corrected, or an outcome is ambiguous. Similar-sounding markets or bets can have different settlement terms.

Price, liquidity, and interpretation
In a prediction market, a position can lose value as its price changes, and a thin market may make an exit difficult or costly. Misreading the contract’s resolution conditions can also lead to a different result than expected. A displayed price is not inherently fair, and an exchange format does not remove the possibility of loss.
Trading integrity
Fraud and misuse of nonpublic information are additional risks. On February 25, 2026, the CFTC issued an enforcement advisory describing cases involving nonpublic information and fraud tied to event contracts traded on KalshiEX, and affirming its authority to police prohibited trading practices on designated contract markets. The advisory describes enforcement matters; it is not evidence that every market or participant is affected. Read the CFTC advisory.

Sportsbook wager risk
A sportsbook wager can lose the stake under its terms if the chosen outcome does not win. The offered odds and house rules determine the payout. Neither product removes financial risk: the relevant questions are how much can be lost, what the contract or bet requires to win, and what charges or exit conditions apply.
Regulation and where the product is available
In the United States, CFTC-regulated designated contract markets operate within the federal derivatives framework. Sports event contracts remain a contested category, however, and one regulatory label does not settle every dispute over jurisdiction or legality. Sportsbooks generally operate under state gaming frameworks where authorized, so availability and rules depend on the jurisdiction.
The CFTC’s March 16, 2026 notice sought public comment on prediction-market rules, event-contract derivatives, public-interest exclusions, and related issues; its comment deadline was April 30, 2026. The notice was part of an active policy process, not a final resolution. The Associated Press has also reported disputes between prediction-market platforms and states over sports event contracts, alongside continuing legal challenges and regulatory uncertainty. 1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore using a platform, check its current terms and whether the product is available to you in your jurisdiction. Do not infer that a sports event contract is legal everywhere in the United States simply because a platform offers it.
A practical comparison checklist
- Is the prediction-market contract or sportsbook bet describing exactly the same outcome?
- What is the maximum amount you can lose, and what is the net payout if the outcome goes your way?
- Which commissions, transaction fees, odds pricing, penalties, or other charges apply?
- What are the settlement conditions for postponements, corrections, or ambiguous results?
- Can you exit before settlement, at what current price, and is there enough liquidity or a sportsbook cash-out offer?
- Is the product currently available to you under the rules of your jurisdiction?
What a study of prediction-market sports prices can—and cannot—show
Moshrefi’s 2026 working paper also reports that, in its sample and under its methodology, cross-game parlay prices were above the product of contemporaneous prices for the individual legs, with the reported overpricing increasing as the number of legs rose. This is a finding about that paper’s Kalshi dataset, not a claim about every prediction-market parlay, every time period, or the comparative cost of sportsbook parlays. It does not establish that one product type is universally more accurate or less costly. See the working paper.
