Bullion involves premiums, delivery, storage and resale logistics. ETF shares avoid those arrangements for the investor, but carry fund expenses, trading costs and custody or market risks. Neither is universally better: compare the actual bullion quote and storage terms with the specific fund’s fees, trading conditions and prospectus.
What you own: bullion or shares in a fund or trust
Physical bullion means investment bars or bullion coins bought from a bank or reputable dealer. The World Gold Council (WGC), an industry association, describes bars with purities broadly ranging from 99.5% to 99.99%; investment coins commonly range from 91.67% (22 carat) to 99.99% (24 carat). Product specifications vary, so check the item you are buying. WGC guide to gold assets.
A physically backed gold exchange-traded fund (ETF) or trust is different: the investor owns shares or units under the product’s legal structure, not bullion held personally. Custody, allocation, redemption and other terms depend on the exact product. “Gold ETF” is not a single uniform structure; read its prospectus or equivalent filing before investing.
What the structure can mean in practice
For example, the abrdn Gold ETF Trust’s 2025 Form 10-K says its objective is to reflect the price of gold bullion less expenses, and that its shares represent an interest in trust-owned physical gold. The filing also describes temporary unallocated gold used to facilitate creations or redemptions and identifies risks relating to unallocated gold and the custodian. Those terms describe this trust, not every gold ETF. abrdn Gold ETF Trust 2025 Form 10-K.

Compare the costs you will actually pay
| Cost or feature | Physical bars and bullion coins | Physically backed ETF or trust shares |
|---|---|---|
| Buying | Dealer or bank price generally includes a premium over spot; transaction fees and delivery may also apply. | Annual fund expenses apply; brokerage commissions and other trading costs may also apply. Check the prospectus and broker. |
| Ongoing ownership | Storage and insurance may cost extra. Self-storage has security and access trade-offs; third-party providers have their own fees and terms. | Ongoing expenses reduce returns. There may also be trading costs when buying or selling. |
| Selling | Resale depends on the product, its condition and provenance, dealer access, and the dealer’s buyback price or spread. | The bid-ask spread and the share’s market price relative to NAV can affect the price received. |
Bullion: premiums, delivery, storage and insurance
The WGC says buyers of investment bars and coins pay a premium over spot and are responsible for delivery, storage and insurance. Its retail FAQ notes that manufacturing costs can make coins costlier per ounce than small bars, and small bars costlier per ounce than larger bars. This is a general cost pattern, not a price quote for a particular product. Ask for the full purchase price, delivery charge and dealer buyback price for the exact item. WGC retail gold investment FAQs.
Storage choices include keeping bullion yourself, using a rented bank or storage box, or using a professional vault. They differ in access, security, insurance and provider terms. The WGC says professional-vault gold is typically easier to sell, insurance is often included in the storage fee, and theft or flood-damage risk is likely reduced. Verify any provider’s ownership records, audit arrangements, insurance coverage, access and redemption terms; the WGC’s general guidance does not establish the terms of a specific provider.

ETF shares: expenses are only one part of trading cost
In addition to an ETF’s stated fees, investors may face brokerage commissions and the bid-ask spread. The bid is the highest price a buyer is offering; the ask is the lowest price a seller is accepting. The SEC calls the spread a “hidden cost” because it reduces potential returns. Its illustration—not a current market quote—shows an investor buying 200 shares at a $60 ask and selling immediately at a $59.50 bid, for a $100 loss before other costs. SEC Investor Bulletin: Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs).
ETF expense figures also need a date and context. The WGC reported that annual management fees for physically backed gold ETFs ranged from 7 to 297 basis points, with many US and European funds charging less than 20 basis points, using data as of September 2020. These are historical figures, not current fee quotes. Check the current expense ratio and prospectus for the fund you are considering. WGC historical gold ETF fee data.

Liquidity: how quickly can you sell, and at what price?
ETF shares trade on an exchange during market hours, which can make them straightforward to buy or sell through a brokerage account. But an exchange listing does not guarantee a particular execution price or that a liquid market will always be available. The SEC says an ETF’s market price may be above or below its net asset value (NAV). Authorized-participant arbitrage is expected to pull prices toward NAV, but a premium or discount can persist, and a trading market may fail to develop. Review the fund’s holdings, NAV and closing price, premium-or-discount history, and median bid-ask spread in addition to its prospectus.
With bullion, selling usually means finding a dealer or other buyer. The price you receive can depend on the product’s demand, condition, provenance, dealer access and buyback terms. Storage arrangements matter too: professional vaulting may make resale easier according to the WGC, while self-held bullion leaves you responsible for arranging the transaction and transport.

Gold-market-wide trading volume should not be mistaken for liquidity in a particular coin or ETF. The WGC’s 2025 Gold Market Primer estimates average daily gold trading at US$361 billion, equivalent to about 3,000 tonnes traded daily. That estimate describes the broad gold market, not the depth or resale terms for an individual retail product. WGC Gold Market Primer: Market size and structure.

- Physical bullion: You bear responsibility for authenticity, safekeeping, insurance and access. Dealer pricing and resale conditions can affect the amount recovered when you sell.
- ETF or trust shares: You rely on the product’s legal and custody arrangements, as well as exchange trading and pricing. Fund expenses, spreads, premiums or discounts to NAV, and custodian-related terms can affect results.
- Tax: Treatment depends on where you live and on the exact product. Check current local tax guidance and the product’s tax documents rather than applying another jurisdiction’s rules.
For ETF-specific checks, the SEC recommends examining the prospectus and reviewing NAV, closing price, premium-or-discount history, portfolio holdings and median bid-ask spread. Those details help assess the actual product and its trading conditions; they do not guarantee future liquidity or price alignment.

How to decide between physical gold and an ETF
Compare the same investment amount and holding period rather than treating one published fee as the full cost. Gather the following figures and terms before deciding:
- For bullion: the dealer’s price over spot, delivery cost, buyback quote, and the cost and coverage of your chosen storage and insurance.
- For an ETF or trust: the current annual expense ratio, brokerage charges, typical or median bid-ask spread, and how its market price has compared with NAV.
- For either choice: your access to a reputable dealer or brokerage account, the product’s custody or storage arrangements, and applicable local tax treatment.
Direct possession may suit someone who values holding the metal and accepts the logistics and safeguarding responsibilities. Exchange-traded shares may suit someone who values brokerage convenience and accepts fund, market and custodian structures. The better fit depends on the actual costs, terms and trade-offs for the specific bullion and investment product—not on a forecast about gold prices.
