Before buying gold jewelry, match the seller’s exact metal claim and the marks on the item to the rules of the country where it is being sold. A karat or fineness stamp describes gold content; it does not prove by itself that the stamp is genuine. Check the relevant hallmark or official identifier, get the details and return terms in writing, and consider independent testing if doubts remain.
Start with the seller’s exact claim
Ask whether the piece is a gold alloy throughout, hollow gold, gold-filled, gold overlay, rolled gold plate, or gold electroplate. These descriptions are not interchangeable. “Solid gold” means the item is not hollow; it does not mean pure gold, and the karat mark still determines the gold content of the alloy.
Gold-filled, overlay, and rolled gold plate describe gold mechanically applied over base metal. Gold electroplate describes gold applied by an electrolytic process. Under U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance, the relevant descriptions have requirements for gold quality and, for electroplate, minimum thickness; thin layers may also require a mark stating the fraction of karat gold when the layer is less than one-twentieth of the item’s metal weight. A surface layer can wear with use. These terms do not mean the whole item is an alloy of the stated karat. See the FTC’s consumer guidance.
Read karat and fineness correctly
Karat (K) expresses the share of gold in a 24-part alloy. The FTC’s examples are 18K, or 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, and 14K, or 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. Fineness expresses gold in parts per thousand: for example, 585 means 585 parts gold per 1,000, while 750 means 750 parts per 1,000. A higher gold proportion is not the only factor in a piece’s value or suitability; compare purity alongside net gold weight, construction, design, and seller terms.

Marking conventions and legal requirements differ by country. Do not assume a number or stamp pattern has the same legal significance everywhere. The World Gold Council notes that in the U.S., caratage may appear on independent signage near the jewelry or be provided verbally, rather than appearing as a stamp on the item (World Gold Council: gold hallmarks).
Match the marks to the country of sale
United States
FTC consumer guidance says to look for the karat quality mark and, near it, the name or U.S.-registered trademark of the company responsible for the mark. The FTC advises consumers not to buy gold jewelry with a karat mark but no accompanying trademark. This is U.S. guidance, not a universal hallmark rule. The FTC also recommends checking the seller’s reputation and getting the return policy in writing (FTC consumer advice).

United Kingdom
UK Government guidance describes a full hallmark as three compulsory components: a sponsor’s or maker’s mark, a metal-and-fineness mark, and an Assay Office mark. A date letter is optional. The fineness is stated in parts per thousand; the government gives 375 as the minimum gold content for 9-carat gold. Under the summarized UK rules, gold items below 1 gram are exempt from compulsory hallmarking; qualifying items at or above that threshold generally require the recognized hallmark. Check the current official guidance for the item and circumstances (UK Government hallmarking guidance).
India
BIS describes the HUID-era hallmark as including the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. For jewelry bearing an HUID, consumers can use the BIS CARE app’s “Verify HUID” feature. Consult BIS’s official information for the current verification steps, since app workflows can change (BIS hallmarking FAQ; BIS consumer protection).

Use a mark as a check, not proof by itself
Look at marks in good light. A 10× jeweler’s loupe can help make a small hallmark legible; BIS says jewellers should have magnification of at least 10× available to show the hallmark (BIS consumer FAQ). A loupe only helps you see the mark. It cannot determine the item’s composition or authenticate the mark.
- Compare every visible mark with the expected system for the country of sale: the sponsor, fineness, and assay office marks in the UK; the BIS logo, purity, and HUID in India; or the karat mark and nearby responsible-company trademark under FTC U.S. guidance.
- In India, verify an HUID-marked item through BIS CARE’s “Verify HUID” feature rather than relying on a photograph of the mark.
- Ask what official lookup or independent testing route is available if a mark is missing, unclear, or inconsistent with the seller’s description.
Get the important details on the invoice
Before paying, ask for a written description that records what the item is made of and what the seller claims about it. BIS lists invoice details for hallmarked precious-metal articles including the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges (BIS consumer FAQ).

Keep the invoice and any written description. If the claim, stamp, and paperwork do not agree, pause the purchase and ask the seller to explain the discrepancy before paying.
When to seek independent testing
If the jewelry is questionable, ask whether it can be tested independently. In India, BIS says consumers may submit jewelry or a sample to a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for chargeable testing and receive an assay report identifying the sample as marked (BIS consumer protection guidance). Confirm the centre’s process and fees directly. Testing options and consumer protections depend on the country; do not assume the Indian route or remedy applies elsewhere.
BIS states that when hallmarked jewelry is found below its marked purity, the customer is entitled to compensation equal to twice the amount of the difference calculated on the basis of the purity shortage for the weight sold, plus testing charges. This is an Indian consumer protection described by BIS, not a general rule for other markets.
