Fortinet completed its acquisition of Lacework effective August 1, 2024. The deal was announced without financial terms; Fortinet later reported paying $152.3 million in cash. Lacework’s cloud security platform did not simply disappear: Fortinet introduced it as Lacework FortiCNAPP, and current documentation describes ongoing product activity alongside a transition of customer accounts and legacy entitlements.

When did Fortinet acquire Lacework?

Fortinet announced a definitive agreement to acquire Lacework in 2024, saying the transaction was expected to close in the second half of the year, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The announcement did not disclose a purchase price and described Lacework as having nearly 1,000 customers at that time—a company-reported historical figure, not a current or independently verified count. How much did Fortinet pay?

Fortinet’s 2025 Form 10-K reports that it acquired Lacework for $152.3 million in cash. That figure comes from the later accounting filing, not the original announcement. The filing also reports a $106.3 million bargain-purchase gain, primarily because of recognized deferred tax assets; this is an accounting result, not the announced price or a standalone estimate of Lacework’s market value. What did Fortinet plan to do with Lacework’s technology?

Fortinet said it intended to offer Lacework’s cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) as a standalone product and integrate it with its existing portfolio. Its stated aim was to help customers identify, prioritize, and remediate security risks across cloud-native environments, from code through runtime. Fortinet’s Form 10-K

Fortinet subsequently announced general availability of Lacework FortiCNAPP, based on Lacework’s platform and integrated with Fortinet Security Fabric. Fortinet described capabilities including automated remediation and blocking active runtime threats; those are vendor descriptions, not independent test results. Fortinet’s availability announcement

Is Lacework FortiCNAPP still active?

Fortinet’s FortiCNAPP policy changelog includes entries dated 2026, an indication of continued product documentation activity. FortiCNAPP policy changelog

At the same time, Fortinet’s migration FAQ describes a transition of FortiCNAPP accounts to FortiCloud. It defines a “Lacework legacy entitlement” as a SKU Fortinet no longer offers and says customers must use Fortinet SKUs at renewal. This indicates changes in account management and licensing; it does not establish that every Lacework feature or every customer’s access has ended. FortiCNAPP migration FAQ

What should existing Lacework customers check?

The effect of the acquisition depends on an organization’s account and contract, so customers should confirm their own details rather than assume either uninterrupted terms or a universal shutdown.

  • Check which tenant or account is in use and whether Fortinet has scheduled or completed its FortiCloud transition.
  • Review the SKU and entitlement currently attached to the subscription, then confirm the Fortinet SKU and terms that apply at renewal.
  • Ask Fortinet to clarify any migration steps, timing, access changes, support arrangements, and feature implications for the specific account. Fortinet documents deployment and migration services, but customers should verify the scope and availability for their situation. Fortinet Lacework FortiCNAPP services and product information

If you are evaluating whether to keep or replace it

The acquisition alone does not show whether FortiCNAPP is the right fit for a particular organization, nor does it establish comparative product quality or customer outcomes. Assess the platform against your requirements, including:

  • Cloud environments covered and the code-to-cloud capabilities you actually use.
  • Integration with existing security tools and cloud workflows.
  • Alert quality, prioritization, and how remediation is handled.
  • Deployment and migration requirements, including tenant changes.
  • Current entitlements, renewal pricing and terms, and support commitments.

Fortinet founder, chairman, and CEO Ken Xie said at completion that adding Lacework aligned with the company’s commitment to security across on-premises and cloud environments. That statement describes Fortinet’s rationale; it is not evidence of a measured improvement in customer security or service. Fortinet’s completion announcement
