It usually means people are evaluating an unfinished or pre-release version of a crypto product. The label might refer to a blockchain testnet, an alpha or beta app, or testing of selected features or infrastructure. It does not, by itself, mean the product is safe, audited, close to launch, or that testers will earn rewards. Before joining, check what is being tested, whether real assets are involved, and what the project says about resets, data loss, and incentives.
What “in testing” can mean
“In testing” is not a standard certification or a single development stage. A project may use it for a protocol still under development, an app available to beta users, or a separate environment for trying features and infrastructure. The label alone does not tell you what works, who can participate, or how close a public launch is.
For example, a Crypto.com asset statement described ShdwDrive as being on TestNet and said the protocol was still in development. That describes the named project at the time of the statement, not a rule for every crypto product. Read the SHDW asset statement (last updated May 8, 2025).
How a testnet differs from a live network
A testnet is an experimental network where developers and users can evaluate functions without treating it as the production network. It may resemble the live product, but its behavior and data may not be stable. Dash documentation, for instance, defines Testnet as a network for experimentation and evaluation of Dash Core and Dash Platform features, and warns that changes may break backward compatibility. That is a Dash-specific warning, not a guarantee that all testnets behave alike. See Dash’s Testnet documentation.

Test tokens are not automatically money. Singularity Finance says its testnet uses tokens with no monetary value. Do not assume testnet tokens can be sold, redeemed, or transferred to a live network; check the project’s own current documentation. See Singularity Finance’s testnet FAQs.
What testers may be asked to do
Testing can be technical, user-focused, or both. Depending on the project, participants may:

- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Try features and report bugs or confusing behavior.
- Review code or investigate potential exploits.
- Give feedback on usability and functionality.
- Stress-test infrastructure by putting it through demanding use.
These activities are not interchangeable: a project asking users to try an app is not necessarily asking them to audit its code. Euclid Protocol’s July 2, 2024 Aurora announcement described both developer-oriented work, including bug-finding and code review for exploits, and user evaluation and infrastructure testing. Its incentive plans were not finalized when the announcement was published, so it does not establish current availability or a guaranteed reward. Read the Aurora announcement.
Does testing mean a project is safe or nearly ready?
No. A testing label is not proof of an independent security audit, a completed product, or a likely launch date. Check the project’s audit information and known-issue disclosures separately; if the documentation does not establish audit status, do not infer one from the testing label.

Testing environments can also be unstable. Dorsium’s January 2026 risk disclosure for its Alpha Network describes possible resets, data loss, changing or removed features, bugs, downtime, and hardware compatibility problems. Those are examples of risks a project may disclose, not a list that applies to every test. Read Dorsium’s risk disclosure.
Are testers paid or rewarded?
There is no general reward entitlement for participating in a crypto test. Any incentive depends on the project’s written terms and may be conditional, merely proposed, or limited to selected contributors. Singularity Finance describes possible future incentives for top contributors, which is not the same as a guaranteed payment. Euclid’s 2024 announcement also discussed incentives while noting that plans were not finalized at publication.

Before spending time or connecting a wallet, look for current terms explaining eligibility, what counts as qualifying work, how and when rewards are determined, and whether payment is guaranteed. A past announcement or the word “incentivized” should not be treated as a promise unless current terms say so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before you participate
- Identify the scope and stage. Find out whether the test covers an app, protocol, smart contracts, network, or selected feature, and whether the project calls it a testnet, alpha, beta, or something else.
- Check the asset requirements. Confirm whether you need a separate testnet wallet or test tokens, and whether the project explicitly says those tokens have monetary value. Do not put real funds into a test environment unless you understand why they are needed and the risks involved.
- Read the reset and risk terms. Look for warnings about resets, lost data, feature changes, downtime, and compatibility. Testing status does not make a linked wallet, service, or third-party tool risk-free.
- Verify security claims independently. Look for named audit reports and known issues in the project’s own documentation. Testing is not an audit, and absence of an audit claim is not evidence that an audit took place.
- Read incentive terms before relying on them. Distinguish a possible future incentive or informal plan from a written, current commitment with clear eligibility and conditions.
Project guides often address practical questions such as the purpose of a testnet, whether real funds are needed, how participation works, and whether rewards are offered. The answers vary by project; its current documentation should control. See TON’s guide to becoming a tester for TON-based products.
