For the latest displayed U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) inventory, use the Department of Energy’s SPR Quick Facts page and open “Current inventory.” For historical levels, use the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly inventory table and select “Download Series History.” Always record the date beside the barrel figure: the two official routes serve different purposes and may show figures from different dates.
Where to check the current SPR inventory
DOE’s SPR Quick Facts page links to the current inventory snapshot. The site-by-site table reviewed for this article was dated August 20, 2026, and reported a combined 294.1 million barrels across Bayou Choctaw, Big Hill, Bryan Mound, and West Hackberry. Treat that as a dated snapshot, not a live count: check the page for its displayed date whenever you look up the figure.
DOE also cites 411 million barrels as of December 31, 2025, in its discussion of import protection. That is a separate, earlier snapshot; it should not be substituted for, or combined with, the August 2026 site table.
How to find historical SPR levels
-
Open DOE’s SPR Quick Facts page and follow “Historical Inventory” to EIA.

The EIA table displayed a September 30, 2026 release date when checked. A release date is not the same as the observation date for every value; use the month-end date attached to the data point you are comparing.
Choose the right measure for the question
| Measure or route | What it tells you | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| DOE current inventory | The latest displayed DOE snapshot of oil held at the four SPR sites. | Use the specific as-of date on the page; figures are in barrels. |
| EIA historical inventory | A downloadable monthly historical series. | Each observation is reported as of the last day of its month. |
| Days of import protection | A calculated ratio, not another inventory count. | DOE says it divides SPR inventory by EIA-reported net petroleum imports per day; the result can change as either input changes. See DOE’s SPR FAQs. |
| Authorized storage capacity | The amount the reserve is authorized to store, not the amount currently held. | DOE lists capacity of 714 million barrels on the page reviewed October 4, 2026. See DOE’s SPR information. |
| Maximum drawdown capability | A nominal rate at which oil can be withdrawn, not the reserve’s inventory. | DOE lists a maximum nominal capability of 4.4 million barrels per day on the page reviewed October 4, 2026. See the DOE SPR FAQs. |
Why announcements and delivery timing are not inventory updates
An announced sale, exchange, or solicitation describes an action or plan; it is not a measurement of oil currently in storage. For example, DOE announced on September 29, 2026, an exchange solicitation for up to 40 million barrels, with deliveries under awarded exchanges scheduled for November and December 2026. To see the effect on stocks, check a later dated inventory snapshot or EIA month-end observation rather than treating the announcement as a completed withdrawal.

DOE says deliveries could begin within 13 days after an emergency sale announcement. That is a possible delivery lead time, not a measure of stock or a promise that a particular volume will be delivered on that schedule. Details are in the SPR FAQs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use reports for context, not a current count
DOE’s annual Reports to Congress cover broader program information, including physical capacity, petroleum type and quantity, withdrawal and distribution capability, acquisition history and costs, and planned upgrades or maintenance. They can help explain how the reserve operates, but a report is not a substitute for checking DOE’s dated inventory snapshot or EIA’s historical series when you need a level.
