Rivian reported a $1.46 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2024, ended June 30, and had $5.76 billion in cash and cash equivalents at quarter-end, including the first $1 billion from Volkswagen. The figures were reported in August 2024—not for the latest second quarter. Volkswagen’s role is more than a cash infusion: its joint venture with Rivian is developing vehicle electrical architecture and software. Some partnership funding has been received, but other financing remains conditional.
What Rivian’s $1.46 billion Q2 loss meant
Rivian’s Q2 2024 net loss was $1.46 billion, compared with a $1.45 billion net loss in Q1 2024. The company ended June 2024 with $5.76 billion in cash and cash equivalents, a figure that included Volkswagen’s initial $1 billion investment. These are historical, company-reported figures, not a description of Rivian’s current financial position. TechCrunch reported the results on August 6, 2024.
At the time, Rivian was transitioning from its first-generation R1 vehicles to revised R1 trucks and SUVs that it said would be simpler and less expensive to manufacture. The company expected its R2 SUV in 2026 and CEO RJ Scaringe said Rivian aimed to reach positive gross profit by the end of 2024. Those were plans and expectations expressed in 2024, not guarantees of what would happen. Rivian also reported $17 million in Q2 2024 regulatory-credit sales and was developing a charging network; neither fact by itself established a route out of the loss.
What the Volkswagen partnership is for
The proposed Volkswagen relationship described in 2024 paired investment with a joint venture to develop Rivian’s electrical architecture and software for use across vehicles from Rivian and Volkswagen Group. The aim is to support software-defined vehicles—vehicles whose functions can be updated or enabled through software, rather than being fixed entirely by their original hardware configuration. The work is shared, so it is not simply a case of Volkswagen buying Rivian’s technology or Rivian receiving unrestricted funding.

In TechCrunch’s August 6, 2024 coverage, Rivian chief software officer Wassym Bensaid said engineers were working closely with Volkswagen Group on electrical-architecture integration and on how Rivian’s technology could scale across the group’s portfolio. Those comments described the companies’ view of progress at the time; they were not independent validation of the technology or a completed rollout.
Reported progress by November 2025
In a November 12, 2025 corporate update, Volkswagen Group said the joint venture, RV Tech, was developing software-defined vehicle architecture for both companies and had a team of more than 1,500 employees. Volkswagen said winter testing was planned with VW, Audi, and Scout reference vehicles. It also said Rivian intended to use the technology in R2, R3, and R3X and update its existing fleet. These were development plans and reported progress as of that date, not proof that every vehicle deployment had taken place. Volkswagen Group’s November 2025 update quoted CEO Oliver Blume and Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe describing the work positively; those are company executives’ statements, not an independent assessment.

Which Volkswagen funds Rivian had received—and which remained conditional
Rivian’s 2025 annual report separates completed payments from potential future funding. It describes Volkswagen’s initial $1.0 billion equity investment, a further $1.3 billion paid in November 2024 for licensed intellectual property, and a $1.0 billion equity tranche received on June 30, 2025. Other equity investments depended on milestones and regulatory clearances. The report therefore does not support treating every announced or contemplated amount as cash already in Rivian’s account. Rivian’s 2025 annual report provides the terms and conditions.
The same filing describes a $1.0 billion Volkswagen term-loan facility for the joint venture, available for a draw during October 2026 subject to customary funding conditions. If funded, the proceeds would be passed through to Rivian for general corporate purposes. Rivian said there was no assurance the conditions would be met. A loan is also different from equity: it creates repayment obligations and covenants rather than adding ownership capital.

The partnership’s risks as well as its opportunity
The joint venture could give Rivian a development partner and provide services revenue, but its importance also creates execution and governance exposure. Rivian’s filing describes the venture as a primary development partner for vehicle electrical architecture and software. The companies share board representation and co-CEO appointments, and disagreements could slow decisions. Delays or software-quality problems could affect Rivian’s vehicle business. Further equity investment can dilute existing shareholders; borrowing would add debt obligations.
How Rivian’s Q2 2026 results compare
Rivian’s July 30, 2026 results show why the 2024 loss should not be presented as its latest one. For Q2 2026, the company reported an $837 million net loss attributable to common stockholders, versus $1.115 billion for Q2 2025. It also reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of $379 million, compared with $667 million a year earlier. Net loss and adjusted EBITDA are different measures; adjusted EBITDA is a company-defined non-GAAP measure and should not be substituted for net loss. Rivian’s Q2 2026 results release also reported $487 million in net cash used in operating activities and negative free cash flow of $849 million, another company-defined non-GAAP measure.

At June 30, 2026, Rivian reported $5.310 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments. Its $5.846 billion total-liquidity figure included revolver capacity. A separate $7.163 billion pro forma available-liquidity figure included approximately $1.317 billion in net proceeds from a July 2026 follow-on equity offering—that is, proceeds raised after the quarter ended. These liquidity measures are not interchangeable with cash alone.
| Measure | Q2 2024 | Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Net loss | $1.46 billion, reported for the quarter ended June 30, 2024 | $837 million attributable to common stockholders, reported for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
| Cash or liquidity figure | $5.76 billion cash and cash equivalents at quarter-end, including the first $1 billion from Volkswagen, as reported contemporaneously by TechCrunch | $5.310 billion cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments at June 30, 2026; $5.846 billion total liquidity including revolver capacity; $7.163 billion pro forma available liquidity including July 2026 offering proceeds |
The 2026 figures come from different definitions and periods: the pro forma figure incorporates post-quarter proceeds, while the Q2 2024 cash figure was cash and cash equivalents at that quarter-end. A comparison that ignores those distinctions can make Rivian’s available funds appear more directly comparable than they are.

What the 2026 operating update adds
Rivian produced 12,613 vehicles and delivered 12,194 in Q2 2026, exceeding its quarterly delivery outlook of 9,000–11,000. After those deliveries, the company raised its full-year delivery guidance to 65,000–70,000 vehicles. Rivian’s Q2 2026 production and delivery release reports the figures.
For full-year 2026, Rivian’s management guidance was an adjusted EBITDA loss of $1.80–$2.00 billion and capital expenditures of $1.70–$1.80 billion. Guidance is an estimate, not an actual result. Rivian said its delivery outlook reflected stronger deliveries and a changed second-half outlook; its adjusted EBITDA outlook also reflected regulatory-credit revenue and volume, partly offset by raw-material, memory, and logistics costs.
In its Q2 2026 investor presentation, Rivian reported $515 million in software and services revenue, up 37% year over year, and $215 million in gross profit. The company attributed much of the revenue growth to RV Tech electrical-architecture and software-development services, as well as repair and maintenance services and Autonomy+. That makes the venture a material services-revenue contributor in that quarter, but one quarter of revenue does not establish long-term profitability. Rivian’s Q2 2026 investor presentation contains the company’s breakdown.
