To buy Wesfarmers shares in Australia, open and fund an account with a broker that offers ASX trading, find the listing under WES, and submit a buy order. Before confirming, check the company name, order type, quantity, estimated cost and broker fees. Wesfarmers shares trade on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) under the code WES; this guide explains the transaction process, not whether WES is right for you.
1. Choose an ASX broker and compare its costs
Retail investors use a broker to place trades on the ASX. ASX says buyers and sellers need a CHESS-sponsoring broker, and Wesfarmers directs people wishing to trade its shares to a licensed stockbroker or online broker. Check the broker’s current terms and confirm it supports ASX securities and CHESS sponsorship before opening an account.
Online brokers generally let you make your own investment decisions and place trades. Full-service brokers may also provide advice and research, and typically charge more. Compare the service you actually need against the total fees, rather than choosing on a headline brokerage figure alone.
- Brokerage: the charge for placing a trade. ASIC Moneysmart says online brokers commonly charge a flat amount for smaller trades and may charge a percentage for larger ones; structures vary.
- Other account costs: check for platform, account or inactivity fees and any conditions that affect when they apply.
- Order controls and funding: confirm available order types, how you fund the account, and how settlement is handled.
- Advice and records: establish whether the service is execution-only or includes advice, and how you can access trade confirmations and tax records.
Broker fees and terms change, so use each broker’s current fee schedule for the trade size you expect to place. Fees can take a larger share of a small trade. Foreign-exchange charges generally relate to overseas share trades, rather than a domestic ASX purchase of WES.

2. Open the account and arrange funds
Apply through the chosen broker and complete its identity checks. ASIC Moneysmart’s general estimate is that opening an online account often takes under 15 minutes, while identity checks may take a day or two; this is not a guarantee for any particular provider.
Once approved, fund the account or confirm the broker’s linked-bank and settlement arrangements. Make sure you understand when money must be available to pay for a completed trade.
3. Find Wesfarmers and check the order details
Search the broker’s platform for Wesfarmers or WES. Before placing an order, verify that the result names Wesfarmers and identifies the ASX listing. The ticker is a useful identifier, but checking both the name and exchange helps avoid selecting the wrong security.
Choose how much to buy
Enter the number of shares you want. Review the estimated transaction value and add the broker’s applicable charges so you understand the amount required. The market price can change before an order executes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a market or limit order
- Market order: asks the broker to buy at the next available price. It does not set a maximum price, so the execution price may differ from the price you saw while preparing the order.
- Limit order: sets the highest price you are willing to pay per share. The order will execute only if the market reaches that price, and execution is not guaranteed.
Review any other order type in your broker’s own explanation before using it. Before submitting, check the ticker, exchange, quantity, order type and any limit price.
4. Check execution, settlement and records
After submitting the order, check whether it has executed, remains open or was only partly filled. For an executed trade, review the confirmation for the number of shares, execution price and fees. Keep the confirmation and other transaction records for tax time.
ASX says payment is due within two days after execution. Separately, ASIC Moneysmart says proceeds from an online share sale are sent two business days after the trade day. These are settlement details for different sides of a trade; follow the timing and payment instructions given by your broker.

CHESS sponsorship concerns how an ASX holding is sponsored and recorded; it is not a way to place a new buy order. Wesfarmers’ 2025 annual report also describes issuer-sponsored holdings, which are sponsored by Wesfarmers and do not require stockbroker sponsorship. If you already hold Wesfarmers shares and need help with that holding, the company identifies Computershare as its share registry. Some registry information requires your SRN or HIN.
A share price can fall, and you may lose money if you sell for less than you paid. ASIC Moneysmart cautions that shares are not appropriate for everyone and advises considering your investment time frame and risk tolerance. Tax may apply to dividends and capital gains; Australian dividends may also carry franking credits. For questions about your personal circumstances or tax position, consider suitably qualified advice.
