General Catalyst’s reported 2025 departures involved managing directors Deep Nishar, Kyle Doherty and Adam Valkin. Their exits came as the firm broadened beyond venture capital, but the reporting did not establish why they left or whether the firm’s strategic changes caused their departures. A separate report described IPO discussions as very preliminary—not a filed or scheduled offering.

Who left General Catalyst?

On March 3, 2025, TechCrunch reported that managing directors Deep Nishar, Kyle Doherty and Adam Valkin had left the firm. Nishar and Doherty co-led General Catalyst’s late-stage Endurance strategy; Valkin was one of three leads of its early-stage fund. The outlet said the reasons for the departures were unclear. It reported that the investors did not respond to requests for comment and that General Catalyst declined to comment.

The departures followed an earlier expansion in the firm’s leadership: General Catalyst merged with European early-stage firm La Famiglia in October 2023, according to TechCrunch, and later elevated La Famiglia founder Jeannette zu Fürstenberg to a senior role. That sequence provides context for the firm’s evolution, but it does not explain the three investors’ exits.

What was General Catalyst changing beyond venture capital?

The March 2025 coverage described the firm as expanding into wealth management and moving from a partnership model toward a company. TechCrunch reported that sources close to General Catalyst said compensation was shifting toward cash bonuses rather than equity. That compensation detail came from unnamed sources, not a confirmed company policy.

At the time, TechCrunch described General Catalyst as managing $32 billion in assets. Axios, reporting on February 28, 2025, said the firm had raised $8 billion in new venture funds late in 2024. These are figures reported by the outlets for that period, not a directly comparable current measure of assets or fundraising.

Summa Health became an operating commitment

The firm’s healthcare expansion went beyond a proposal. General Catalyst’s website says: “In 2024, we made the unprecedented decision to acquire a hospital system and build a blueprint for proactive, accessible, affordable American healthcare.” This is the firm’s own description of its aims. Its site discusses the Summa Health acquisition and work by its healthcare initiative, HATCo: General Catalyst.

Becker’s Hospital Review reported that the $485 million definitive agreement for Summa Health received conditional approval from Ohio’s attorney general in June 2025 and that the deal closed on October 1, 2025. In August 2026, Becker’s reported subsequent Summa leadership and technology developments. The acquisition is therefore a completed diversification move, distinct from the unresolved IPO speculation.

Was General Catalyst planning an IPO?

Axios reported on February 28, 2025, that General Catalyst was considering an IPO at a very early stage. The report said the firm had no bankers and no timetable; it attributed the information to multiple sources, and General Catalyst declined to comment. That is evidence of preliminary consideration, not a decision to go public.

The available reporting does not establish whether the firm later advanced or abandoned the idea. There is no basis here to describe an IPO as imminent, scheduled or filed, and the completed Summa acquisition should not be mistaken for a public-offering announcement.

What the departures do—and do not—show

The timing puts senior-investor departures alongside a significant change in General Catalyst’s scope and organizational model. It does not prove a causal link. The reporting establishes who left and describes strategic and compensation changes, but it does not establish the investors’ reasons or connect those reasons to the firm’s expansion.
