What Skills Are Needed for Electrification Jobs?

Electrification work combines transferable trade skills with specialized training for buildings, heat pumps, solar, EV charging, grids and more. The right requirements depend on the occupation and location.

Electrification jobs call for a mix of transferable trade skills and technology-specific training—not one universal qualification. Mathematics, problem-solving, critical thinking and safe work practices are useful foundations; the technical skills then depend on whether you work with buildings, heat pumps, solar, EV charging, grids or batteries. Your target occupation and location determine which apprenticeship, licence, code knowledge or recognized training you may need.

Which skills carry across electrification jobs?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies mathematics, critical thinking, recognizing and solving problems, and deductive reasoning as common skills for future clean-energy workers. Its guide also points to reading blueprints and drawings in some trades. These foundations help workers interpret plans, diagnose faults and make decisions on site.

“Mathematics, critical thinking, critical problem recognition and solving, and deductive reasoning are all common skills that future clean energy workers will need.”

— U.S. Department of Energy workforce guide

Other capabilities depend on the work but recur across many roles: using hand and power tools, understanding electrical or mechanical systems, following safety procedures, and communicating clearly with colleagues and customers. DOE’s examples include traditional construction occupations—carpenters, electricians, plumbers and pipefitters, roofers, and HVAC installers—that may build on existing experience with targeted upskilling rather than a complete change of trade. The International Energy Agency (IEA) likewise describes electricians and plumbers moving into solar and heat-pump work. This is a possible route, not a promise of eligibility or local hiring demand.

What skills does each type of work require?

Technology changes the technical tasks and the training that may be relevant. The examples below describe capabilities identified in official U.S. and international sources; they are not a complete qualification standard.

Work area Relevant skills What to check
Electrified buildings and electrical upgrades Read electrical schematics and blueprints; understand applicable power electronics; carry out electrical upgrades; follow safe work practices. DOE presents these as examples for clean-energy electrician roles, not as a complete licensing or qualification standard.
Heat pumps and building systems HVAC, plumbing or mechanical experience; understand the refrigeration cycle; diagnose and install heat pumps; understand building systems and equipment. DOE’s examples span electrician, plumbing, HVAC and building-auditor roles. Who performs each task depends on the job and jurisdiction.
EV charging infrastructure Site assessment, load calculations, electrical-code knowledge, jobsite safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), installation and maintenance practices. The U.S. Joint Office describes these as content in Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) training for electricians installing EV supply equipment. Confirm current program and local requirements.
Solar and renewable energy Related electrical, construction, mechanical and design skills, supplemented by technology-specific training. DOE names solar installations and power electronics as examples; IEA describes solar PV design as an upskilling destination for some trade workers.
Grids, batteries and broader energy systems Capabilities vary across engineering, installation and maintenance work; technical roles sit alongside hands-on roles. The IEA’s workforce analysis includes grids and energy efficiency, but its overview does not set out one universal competency framework.

Which occupations and training routes should you consider?

Official sources name electricians and electrical fitters, plumbers and heating installers, HVAC and refrigeration technicians, engineering technicians, electronics engineers with power-systems expertise, machinery workers, project and production managers, and building energy auditors or modelers. This range reflects the breadth of electrification work, not equal demand in every region.

To assess a route before paying for training or leaving a current job, start with a specific occupation and location. Requirements for electrical work, refrigerants, building systems and EV charging are not interchangeable.

  1. Choose the work and place. Narrow the goal to an occupation—such as heat-pump installer or EV charging electrician—and the jurisdiction where you plan to work.
  2. Check entry requirements locally. Ask employers, apprenticeship providers and relevant licensing or code authorities which prior experience, licence, apprenticeship or recognized training they require for that role.
  3. Identify the skills gap. Compare those requirements with your current trade experience. A worker with electrical, plumbing or HVAC skills may need targeted upskilling; someone without a related background may need a broader training route.
  4. Verify any named course. In the United States, EVITP is described by the Joint Office in the context of electricians installing EV supply equipment; it is not a universal credential for every electrification job. The Joint Office also notes that recognition of some courses can vary by provider and content.
  5. Compare the practical fit. Consider the additional training, safety and code obligations, day-to-day work and physical setting, local employer demand, and access to training. The sources do not support ranking pathways universally by pay or job security.

DOE recommends sector-specific curriculum and identifies foundational skills such as mathematics and problem-solving. IEA says employers are increasing on-the-job training and describes upskilling existing trades as a short-term response to clean-energy skill gaps, while cautioning that upskilling cannot replace growth in the overall trades workforce.

What do workforce estimates say about demand and retraining?

Published estimates can help frame workforce planning, but they measure different things in different places. They should not be read as a forecast of an individual’s hiring prospects.

Figure Scope and qualification
150,000 to 500,000 workers needing retraining or reskilling per year through 2050 European Commission 2026 model estimate for the EU—not an observed annual count or a global estimate. The Commission says this is less than 1% of the working-age population, with the greatest share associated with EVs and wind and solar.
€350 million to €1.4 billion per year European Commission 2026 modeled annual EU cost range for retraining and reskilling.
75% of respondents struggling to hire for construction roles Figure from the survey described in the IEA’s 2024 executive summary; it is a respondent finding, not a measure of all employers.

The IEA’s 2026 report covers renewable energy, grids and energy efficiency. It draws on employment modeling for 2024, three surveys conducted in 2025 with more than 700 respondents, and workshops involving the IEA and European Commission. Those inputs offer a broad view of workforce issues, but they do not turn the varied occupations into one global job count under the label “electrification jobs.”

Methods matter when reading narrower projections too. The UK technical annex describes a bottom-up heat-pump installer model based on projected deployment and labor-intensity assumptions. Such a scenario can illustrate possible workforce needs under its assumptions; it is not a count of current vacancies.

How should you use this information when planning a career move?

Use workforce estimates to understand why training and hiring needs are being discussed, then make the decision at the level of a specific trade and local requirement. Evidence from the United States, EU, UK and international sources has different geographic coverage, definitions and methods. The sources do not establish a single international standard for “electrification jobs” or a credential that covers all the technologies described here.
