A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot protect you if you reveal its recovery phrase, approve a malicious action, or lose the device and its backup. With self-custody, you are responsible for the keys and recovery.
Keep your recovery phrase and private keys secret
A recovery phrase or private key can give someone control of the associated wallet. Treat it like the wallet’s master key: never share it with a support agent, enter it on a website, or send it in a message. Ethereum.org’s guidance is explicit: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” A legitimate support team does not need these secrets to help with an account or device problem.
Write down recovery material using the method your wallet recommends and keep it somewhere secure and offline. Avoid screenshots and digital copies that might sync to cloud storage or be exposed if an account or device is compromised. Keep any backup copy private: anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet.
Recognize phishing and suspicious wallet requests
Scams may imitate a wallet, exchange, support team, or familiar person. They can try to trick you into revealing secrets, installing malware, connecting a wallet, or signing a transaction or approval. An unexpected link, attachment, urgent warning, giveaway, or request to “verify” your wallet deserves skepticism. The FTC recommends slowing down, avoiding links in unexpected messages, and contacting an organization through a known legitimate website or phone number instead. See its phishing guidance.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Open a wallet or exchange using a bookmark or a route you already trust, rather than a link in a message or search result.
- Before connecting or signing, check which site or app is requesting access and read the action shown in your wallet. Do not approve something you do not understand or did not intend to do.
- For QR codes, verify the destination URL before opening it; never enter wallet credentials on a site reached only through a QR code.
- Before sending crypto, verify the complete receiving address using a trusted source. Address-poisoning scams can place a lookalike address in transaction history or other places you might copy from.
Bitcoin.org describes fake support, impersonation, phishing websites, giveaway scams, QR-code phishing, and address poisoning as common scam patterns. Its guidance also states: “No legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key.” Cryptocurrency transfers generally cannot be reversed, so check the recipient and details before confirming.
Back up a wallet without exposing it
Keep a wallet backup in a secure place that remains accessible to you but not to other people. An online backup can be stolen if the account or service storing it is compromised. The right recovery method depends on the wallet: some wallets require regular backups, while many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from a recovery phrase. Follow your wallet’s own instructions rather than assuming every wallet works the same way. Bitcoin.org explains backup considerations in its wallet security guide.

A backup is useful only if it is both protected and recoverable. Consider whether the chosen location protects it from unauthorized access and whether you could still reach it if your device were lost or damaged. Do not make extra copies in less secure places simply for convenience.
Decide whether a hardware wallet fits your needs
A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, reducing their exposure to online compromise. It does not make a wallet invulnerable: a device can be lost, damaged, or stolen, and a person who obtains the recovery phrase may still gain control. Hardware storage is a security measure, not a substitute for protecting recovery material or checking what you sign. Ethereum.org explains hardware wallets and other security practices in its security guidance.

Buy and set up a device carefully
- Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices sold through third-party marketplaces may contain recovery phrases already known to an attacker or modified firmware.
- Check the device’s integrity as directed by its manufacturer, and generate the recovery phrase yourself during first-time setup. Do not use a phrase supplied with the device.
- Keep the phrase offline and separate from the device. The device protects keys while in use; the phrase is a separate means of access.
Compare devices by fit, not by unsupported rankings
No single device is right for every holder, and there is no product ranking established here. Compare supported assets and networks, recovery procedure, security and update practices, physical durability, usability, and whether you can verify the sales channel. Make sure the device supports the assets and networks you actually use before relying on it.
Choose between self-custody and exchange custody deliberately
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting the recovery phrase and restoring access. A centralized exchange holds custody for you and may be able to help with account recovery, but you rely on the provider’s security and continued operation. These arrangements shift risks rather than making one option universally safer. Ethereum.org outlines the distinction in its account creation guide, and Bitcoin.org discusses wallet security in its wallet guide.

What to do if you suspect a wallet has been compromised
Act promptly, but do not let an urgent message push you into disclosing secrets or sending funds to someone offering help. If you entered a recovery phrase on a scam site or believe someone else has it, treat that wallet as exposed.
- Create a new wallet in a secure setup. Use a device and process you trust, and keep the new recovery phrase private and offline.
- Move any remaining funds to the new wallet. Check the destination carefully before sending. A transfer cannot generally be reversed once confirmed.
- Revoke token approvals where applicable. A malicious approval may leave a third party able to interact with tokens, even after you stop using the scam site.
- Secure related accounts. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication on related accounts that offer it.
- Stop engaging with recovery offers. People who promise guaranteed recovery or demand an upfront payment are often running a follow-on scam. Do not send more crypto to them.
Ethereum.org’s scam response guidance covers moving remaining funds, revoking approvals, and securing linked accounts. The FTC also explains what to know about cryptocurrency and scams.
