Wall Street’s AI Rally Faces New Risks as Treasury Yields Soar

Higher Treasury yields can pressure AI stock valuations and raise data-center financing costs, even as earnings expectations and AI demand support the rally.

Rising Treasury yields are a risk to the AI-fueled stock rally, not proof that it is about to end. Higher long-term rates can pressure stock valuations and increase the cost of financing data-center investment. At the same time, strong earnings expectations and recent gains in major technology stocks have helped sustain the market. Bloomberg’s October 4, 2026 report describes that tension—not a certain forecast of a selloff.

What changed in Treasury yields?

In the week before Bloomberg’s October 4, 2026 report, the 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.69% and the 10-year yield topped 5.3%. Bloomberg said neither level had been reached since 2002. Kiplinger’s October 1 report gave more precise same-day readings: the 10-year yield reached 5.344% intraday and closed at 5.234%; the 30-year reached 5.693% intraday and closed at 5.603%. These are dated observations, not current quotes. Bloomberg; Kiplinger

Why do higher yields matter for AI stocks?

They can weigh on valuations

When Treasury yields rise, bonds offer investors a more competitive alternative to stocks. Higher rates can also reduce the present value investors place on profits expected far in the future. That matters for growth companies, including businesses whose valuations rely heavily on expectations of future AI-related revenue. The effect is pressure, not a mechanical rule: earnings growth and investor expectations also influence share prices.

They can raise infrastructure financing costs

Building data centers and buying the equipment to run them requires substantial investment. Higher borrowing costs can make that investment more expensive, particularly for companies that need outside financing. Yet spending is not a headwind for every company: it supports revenue for suppliers such as chipmakers and firms involved in data-center construction. The market question is whether the spending ultimately produces returns that justify its cost.

Why has the rally held up?

Stocks had not immediately buckled as yields rose. Bloomberg reported on October 4 that the Nasdaq 100 had reached a fresh record on the Friday before publication and was up 22% for the year. The S&P 500 was less than 1% below its August all-time high. Bloomberg attributed much of recent index gains to Microsoft, Nvidia and Apple, a reminder that strong headline performance can coexist with reliance on a relatively small number of large technology companies.

Earnings expectations offered another support. Bloomberg Intelligence, as reported by Bloomberg, forecast third-quarter earnings-per-share growth of more than 65% for the technology sector and more than 24% for the S&P 500. Those were estimates, not final results. Bloomberg also reported that the S&P 500 traded below 19 times forward earnings, down from above 21 in May. That lower multiple may indicate a less demanding valuation than earlier in the year, but it does not remove the risk that higher rates or weaker earnings could prompt further repricing.

Does AI infrastructure spending create a funding risk?

For AI builders, the investment cycle has two sides: capital expenditure can expand capacity and create supplier revenue, but it also raises the hurdle for returns. Bloomberg reported that annual free cash flow had turned negative at Alphabet, Amazon and Meta. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Robert Schiffman said hyperscalers’ cash needs exceeded internal cash sources and that debt markets would drive leverage higher over the next two years. Bloomberg also noted that ratings had not yet been hurt, with expected EBITDA growth serving as an offset.

That evidence is specific to the companies and claims described in Bloomberg’s report; it should not be generalized into a claim that every AI company has negative cash flow. For a company-level example, Hewlett Packard Enterprise reported $9.0 billion in Cloud & AI revenue for fiscal 2026’s third quarter, up 25.4% year over year. That issuer-reported result shows demand in one business, not the profitability or investment returns of the AI industry as a whole. HPE’s fiscal 2026 third-quarter results

What could intensify or ease the pressure?

The yield story is tied to competing macroeconomic risks. Bloomberg identified persistent inflation, rising oil prices, possible further Federal Reserve tightening, geopolitical uncertainty and downside growth risk. If inflation remains persistent, investors may expect rates to stay higher or rise further, which can pressure valuations and financing conditions. If growth weakens, companies may face a separate challenge to the earnings expectations supporting share prices.

Bloomberg also noted that a resolution of the Iran war could ease oil-price pressure, but the timing and effect were uncertain. That is a possible change in the outlook, not a dependable forecast. As market strategist Magdalena Ocampo of Principal Asset Management told Bloomberg, “What’s changing now is this rising perception that there’s potentially more upside risk to inflation and a bit more downside risk to growth. And that’s perhaps what the markets are telling us underneath the surface.”

What should investors watch?

  • Long-term Treasury yields: Track dated 10- and 30-year readings, rather than treating a past peak as today’s rate.
  • Earnings results versus estimates: Compare reported results with forecasts; the growth figures cited above were expectations, not outcomes.
  • Cash flow and borrowing: For major AI infrastructure spenders, watch whether internal cash generation covers investment or borrowing needs continue to grow.
  • Returns on AI investment: Revenue growth at suppliers or infrastructure businesses does not by itself establish that large spenders will earn adequate returns.
  • Market breadth: Consider whether index gains extend beyond a few large technology contributors.
  • Inflation, oil and Fed expectations: These influence the path of yields, but geopolitical developments and growth conditions make the direction uncertain.

Bloomberg quoted Franklin Templeton Institute strategist Chris Galipeau saying, “If 10-year yields go to 6%, we’re going to have a different conversation,” and Mahoney Asset Management CEO Ken Mahoney saying, “With these higher rates, all of us are on edge,”. These are attributed market views, not thresholds that reliably predict a particular market outcome.

What the yield risk does—and does not—mean

Rising yields create a credible challenge for expensive, long-duration stocks and for companies funding capital-intensive AI projects. But strong earnings expectations, AI-related demand and recent market performance have so far counterbalanced that pressure. The cited evidence identifies conditions investors may want to monitor; it does not establish that the rally must continue or that a selloff is imminent. The figures and forecasts reflect reporting available on October 4, 2026 and can change quickly.
