Protect a self-custody Bitcoin wallet by keeping its recovery material private and offline, making the wallet’s required backup before storing funds, and securing the devices you use. If a device is lost or damaged, restore only through the wallet’s documented process and with the correct backup. Losing the only required recovery material—or exposing it to someone else—can mean permanent loss.
What protects a self-custody Bitcoin wallet?
A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys that authorize spending; it does not hold coins as a file on your phone or computer. With self-custody, you are responsible for keeping the required keys and recovery information accessible to you and inaccessible to others. Bitcoin.org explains the responsibility and the possibility of permanent loss in its self-custody guidance.
- Back up the wallet before relying on it. Find the wallet’s own backup instructions. Many modern wallets use a recovery phrase, but some require a wallet file, password, additional backup, or other wallet-specific information. A phrase alone is not guaranteed to restore every wallet.
- Keep recovery material secret and offline. Anyone who gets a recovery phrase or private key may be able to spend the associated bitcoin. Do not photograph it, save it in cloud storage, enter it on a website, or send it in a message.
- Secure the device and software. Use a strong password where supported, keep the wallet and operating system updated, and avoid untrusted downloads. Encryption helps but does not defeat every keylogger or compromised device.
- Protect against physical loss as well as theft. Store backups in secure physical locations and consider durable media. Bitcoin.org discusses these backup considerations in its wallet-security guidance.
Write down the wallet’s exact name, the official source for its recovery instructions, and what backup components it requires. Keep that information separate from the secret itself where practical, so a helper can identify the right documentation without receiving your keys.
Choose storage to match how you use bitcoin
Hot wallets, hardware wallets, and multisignature arrangements differ in convenience and in the work required to recover them. None is universally best; the important question is whether you can maintain the setup and its backups safely.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Approach | Internet exposure | Routine spending | Keys and backups | Setup and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot wallet | Runs on an internet-connected device, so it is more exposed to online threats. | Convenient for everyday spending. | Follow the specific wallet’s backup method; a recovery phrase may be used, but requirements vary. | Typically simpler to use, but restoring still depends on having all required backup material and any needed password or passphrase. |
| Hardware wallet or other offline storage | Designed to keep signing keys offline, reducing direct exposure to an internet-connected device. | Less convenient for frequent spending than a hot wallet. | Requires a safe backup for the wallet’s recovery information; the device itself is not a substitute for that backup. | Correct setup and recovery matter. Losing the device may be manageable with the required backup; losing or exposing that backup creates a different and potentially irreversible problem. |
| Multisignature | Can require approvals from multiple keys, which may be held separately. | Usually involves more steps to authorize a payment. | Requires enough of the configured signing keys and a correct record of the arrangement to recover or spend. | More keys and recovery steps increase operational complexity. Losing too many keys or misunderstanding the setup can prevent access. |
Bitcoin.org describes hot wallets as useful for everyday spending and offline wallets as an option for savings, and also covers hardware wallets and multisignature. Those options are useful only if you can reliably maintain the corresponding backup and recovery process.
How to prepare before a device is lost
- Identify the wallet and version. Use the wallet’s official documentation or support site, reached independently rather than through an unsolicited message or search advertisement.
- Confirm the backup method. Determine whether recovery requires a phrase, wallet file, password, passphrase, specific software, or more than one signing key. Do not assume a backup from one wallet works in another.
- Create and verify the backup as instructed. Do this before putting funds in the wallet. Follow the maker’s current instructions; never test a phrase by entering it into an online checker or an unrelated app.
- Store it securely offline. Prevent access by other people while protecting against foreseeable physical damage or loss. Multiple secure locations and durable storage are considerations, but extra copies also create more opportunities for theft.
- Keep recovery instructions available without exposing secrets. Record how to find the official documentation and what wallet setup you used. If someone may need to help later, explain where instructions are—not the phrase or private key itself.
Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance covers backups, passwords, offline storage, software updates, and multisignature. Bitcoin Developer Documentation also explains wallet and key concepts, including the risk of losing access before backup, in its wallet documentation.

What to do if a wallet device is lost or damaged
A missing device and a missing key are not the same problem. A compatible wallet may restore access if you still have every required backup component. If the wallet requires a password or passphrase that you no longer know, the backup may not be enough.
- Pause and identify the exact wallet. Find its official recovery documentation using a known, authentic source. Do not follow instructions from unsolicited messages or unofficial recovery tools.
- Check what the wallet requires. Confirm compatibility, backup format, and whether a password, passphrase, wallet file, or multiple signing keys are part of your configuration.
- Use an authentic compatible device or wallet. Download software only from the wallet maker’s official source and be alert to counterfeit hardware devices, a risk highlighted by Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance.
- Follow the documented recovery steps privately. Enter recovery information only where the wallet’s official instructions require it, on a device and software you trust. Never give it to support staff, a recovery service, or anyone contacting you.
- Stop if the instructions do not match your setup. Do not improvise with a different wallet or submit the phrase to a website. Contact official support using independently verified contact details, describing the issue without revealing secrets.
There is no universal restoration procedure: wallets differ in backup formats, derivation standards, passphrase use, and multisignature configuration. Bitcoin Core’s wallet-management documentation distinguishes backups, seeds, and passphrases and warns about forgotten passphrases. The wallet maker’s current instructions are the controlling guide for a particular setup.

If a recovery phrase or private key may be exposed
Treat an exposed recovery phrase or private key as compromised. Do not disclose it again while asking for help. Bitcoin.org warns that scammers target recovery attempts with requests for seed phrases, fake recovery offers, and address substitution; its scam guidance also recommends checking the full receiving address before sending.
- Reject any request to type your phrase into a web form, send it by email or message, or disclose it to support.
- Be skeptical of paid promises to recover bitcoin, especially from people who contact you first.
- Before sending a transaction, verify the entire receiving address on the trusted device or display; do not rely on a partial match.
If you need to move funds after a suspected exposure, use only current official instructions for your specific wallet configuration. The correct steps depend on the wallet and are not the same for every setup; do not rely on a generic migration recipe or let an unknown person perform it for you.

When access may be permanently lost
Self-custody has no universal account-reset process. If the only required recovery material is gone, or a required password or passphrase is irretrievable, there may be no way to regain access. Bitcoin.org’s self-custody guidance explains that losing access can mean permanent loss. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed recovery or asking for your secrets in exchange for help.
