The available official and contemporaneous reports do not verify that Anonymous leaked Israeli credit card details. They describe a January 2012 exposure linked publicly to a group calling itself Group-XP: the Bank of Israel said compromised business websites had exposed details for about 15,000 active cards. That was the regulator’s initial estimate, not the much larger figure claimed by the attackers.
Did Anonymous leak Israeli credit card details?
The reviewed sources do not establish Anonymous as responsible for this incident. The Bank of Israel’s later chronology attributed the activity to a group identified as being from Saudi Arabia, while an Associated Press report published by CBS News said the hackers identified themselves as Group-XP. Those were public attributions at the time; they do not independently verify the operators’ identities or nationality.
Accordingly, “Anonymous” is an unsupported attribution for this specific 2012 exposure. It should not be conflated with other claims involving Anonymous, Operation Israel, or later card leaks.
What happened to the Israeli card details?
On 3 January 2012, the Bank of Israel’s Banking Supervision Department said card details had been exposed online after hackers broke into business websites that stored them. The Bank’s Research Department later described security deficiencies on coupon and small websites. The official account concerns websites holding payment details; it does not say that the card issuers’ own systems were breached.

The initial report from the card companies put the number at about 15,000 active cards across CAL, Isracard, and Leumi Card. The regulator’s notice specified that this estimate was based on the companies’ initial report. The Associated Press reported that the hackers claimed 400,000 cardholders, but that claim is not the Bank of Israel’s verified active-card estimate.
How many people or valid records were affected?
The official figure is an initial estimate of about 15,000 active cards, not a final forensic count of unique people or valid records. The reviewed sources do not establish a definitive count beyond that estimate, nor do they document a complete technical explanation of how the attackers gained access to each website. The 400,000 figure should therefore be presented only as the attackers’ claim reported by the Associated Press, not as the confirmed number affected.

What did card companies and customers do?
The Bank of Israel said the card companies had identified cards whose details were exposed, blocked those cards for internet and telephone purchases, and were contacting customers to arrange replacements. It advised customers to check transaction statements or issuer websites for purchases they did not make and report suspected misuse promptly. A customer who suspected misuse could contact their card company to discuss whether a charge should be cancelled.
The regulator also said customers would not bear responsibility for fraudulent use arising from this exposure under the Debit Card Law instructions. That statement describes the regulator’s position on this 2012 incident; it is not a summary of current law or individual legal advice.
