Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Spectrum internet feels slow, first check for an outage, then compare affected devices and test WiFi against a wired connection. That sequence helps distinguish a local device or WiFi problem from an issue affecting the broader connection—before you spend money on new equipment.
Why is my Spectrum internet so slow?
Slow performance can come from an outage, the modem or router, WiFi coverage, a single device, or activity competing for bandwidth. Spectrum lists router location, the number of people using the connection, device hardware and software, and background applications as factors that can affect performance. The first useful question is whether the problem affects one device or several, and whether it persists on a wired connection.
How to troubleshoot slow Spectrum internet, step by step
-
Check for an outage
Before changing equipment, check Spectrum’s outage support instructions through your My Spectrum app or account, or Spectrum support. Outage information is address-dependent. If an outage is reported in your area, a new router, cable, or WiFi Pod will not resolve that provider-side issue.
-
See whether one device or several are affected
Try a second phone, computer, or other connected device. If only one is slow, focus first on that device: close unnecessary background programs, update its browser and software, and restart it. Spectrum Community also names file sharing, malware or adware, firewall settings, and available device memory as possible contributors; these are things to check, not proof of a particular cause. If several devices are slow, investigate the shared connection and equipment as well.

Compare WiFi with Ethernet
When possible, connect a computer directly to the modem using a Cat 5e or higher Ethernet cable, then run a speed test. Check that the computer and modem have compatible ports before choosing a cable. A wired test is diagnostic, not a promised speed fix; it can help separate a WiFi problem from a problem elsewhere in the connection.
What you observe What to investigate next Wired is better than WiFi WiFi signal, router placement, distance, and local wireless conditions. Wired and WiFi are both slow Outage status, device and cable connections, modem/router operation, and the service path; the issue may be broader than WiFi. Only one device is slow That device’s software, hardware, background activity, or security settings. Several devices are slow Shared equipment, an outage, or another issue affecting the connection as a whole. Spectrum Community recommends using a wired computer test with a Cat 5e or higher cable. A WiFi speed result by itself does not establish that Spectrum’s service is slow.

Inspect the connections and activity
Check that coax connections are secure and look for damaged cables or splitters. Also note whether downloads, file sharing, video calls, streaming, or other activity is happening on multiple devices. Spectrum Community published historical activity recommendations in 2021: 1–6 Mbps download and 1–6 Mbps upload for video conferencing; 3–4 Mbps download for smart-home devices; 4–10 Mbps download for online gaming; 5–15 Mbps download for video streaming; and 5–8 Mbps upload for posting videos. These are Spectrum Community guidance from 2021, not current guarantees for a particular app, service tier, or household. App needs and simultaneous use vary, so treat them as rough context rather than a pass/fail standard.

SaleTP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Unplug the modem and the separate router.
- Wait 30 seconds, then restore power to the modem.
- Allow about two minutes for the modem to reconnect before restoring power to the router.
- Give the router time to reconnect, then check the connection again.
If you have a modem/router gateway, skip the separate-router step. Spectrum’s general equipment guidance separately says to wait at least 60 seconds when rebooting. Follow the instructions for your specific equipment rather than combining timings or steps from different procedures. Spectrum cautions that fiber equipment should not be manually troubleshot; use its equipment instructions or contact Spectrum support.
-
Improve WiFi placement if the wired test is better
If performance improves on Ethernet, try repositioning the router before buying coverage hardware. Spectrum’s WiFi 6E Router User Guide, version 12 (2023) recommends a central location, a raised surface, and an open space. Avoid a closet or media center, nearby radio-emitting devices, and placing the router behind a TV. The guide notes that signal weakens with distance; test closer to the router to see whether the connection improves.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
If poor performance is confined to a particular area, first confirm the router is well placed. A compatible Spectrum WiFi Pod may be an option for a coverage problem, but support and compatibility depend on the customer’s setup. Spectrum’s guide describes adding or removing up to five Pods per router; that does not establish compatibility with every router or plan.
When should you contact Spectrum?
Contact Spectrum if an outage is not reported and multiple devices remain slow on a wired connection after checking connections and restarting supported equipment. Share a recent speed-test result and the conditions under which you took it, your subscribed speed, the equipment you use, your network setup, and your ZIP code. Spectrum Community also suggests including modem logs if available. Do not post private MAC or IP addresses publicly; redact them before sharing details in a community forum.

Should you restart or factory-reset the router?
A restart is a reasonable first troubleshooting step when performed according to the instructions for your equipment. A factory reset is different: Spectrum’s WiFi 6E guide says a long press of more than 15 seconds performs a factory reset and removes personalized configuration. Do not use it as a routine speed fix; consult the model’s instructions or Spectrum support first.
