Re:

How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming, Work, and AI Apps?

There is no universal RAM requirement. Compare your gaming and work workloads, distinguish cloud AI from local inference, and check your computer’s limits before buying.

There is no single RAM capacity that suits every gamer, work project, or AI app. For ordinary mixed use and gaming, 16–32 GB is a useful range to compare, not an official requirement. Creative workloads such as 4K video editing and running AI models locally can need more. Before paying for an upgrade, check the exact software workload and whether your computer can use the memory you plan to buy.

Start with the workload—not the operating system minimum

RAM capacity is a budget for the programs and data your computer needs to keep readily available. The amount that makes sense depends on what you run at the same time, the size of your projects, and whether you are using cloud services or processing AI models on your own computer.

Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM as the minimum for Windows 11 and notes that apps and features may require more. That figure is a baseline for the operating system, not a recommendation for gaming or demanding work. Microsoft also lists 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM as a minimum for Copilot+ PCs, alongside other hardware requirements; it is not a universal requirement for every AI app. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.

How much RAM to consider by use

Use What the available guidance says How to apply it
Gaming and ordinary mixed use 16–32 GB is an editorial comparison range, not an official requirement for all games. Consider what runs alongside the game—such as a browser, voice chat, streaming software, mods, or creative tools—and check the specific game’s current requirements.
HD video editing in Premiere Adobe recommends 16 GB for HD media on Windows for the listed Premiere releases. Use this as guidance for that software and media workload, not for every work app.
4K or higher video editing in Premiere Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher media on Windows for the listed releases. Larger projects and other open applications affect the practical budget.
Local Llama 2 inference in Ollama Ollama gives general guidance of at least 8 GB for 7B, 16 GB for 13B, and 64 GB for 70B models. These figures are model-specific rules of thumb; quantization, context, GPU offload, and other running software can change practical memory needs.

Gaming: installed RAM is not a game requirement

Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey lists 32 GB as the largest individual Windows system-RAM category at 43.28% of surveyed systems, followed by 16 GB at 37.60%. The survey is monthly, voluntary, and anonymous. It describes what surveyed Steam customers have installed; it does not show that a game needs 32 GB, or that more RAM improves frame rate or smoothness.

For a gaming decision, check the current official requirements for the particular game and account for the programs you expect to keep open while playing. The survey figures are available on Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey.

Work: match RAM to the project and software

“Work” covers very different workloads, so a recommendation for one application should not be generalized to all office or creative software. Adobe’s requirements for Premiere provide a useful example of how project scale changes the guidance.

Adobe Premiere

For Premiere versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, 26.5, and 26.5.1, Adobe’s current Windows requirements list 8 GB as the minimum, recommend 16 GB for HD media, and recommend 32 GB or more for 4K and higher media. The current Windows table specifies Windows 11 v24H2. On macOS, Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum and recommends 16 GB of unified memory for Apple silicon. The page was last updated September 9, 2026; check Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements for the applicable release and platform.

Adobe’s minimum is not the same as its recommended capacity. For another application, use that developer’s requirements and consider the size of your projects and the other programs you use simultaneously.

AI apps: distinguish cloud services from local inference

Using an AI service through a website or another cloud-based app does not by itself mean its model weights are loaded into your computer’s RAM. The model-memory question is most relevant when you run inference locally on your own machine. Microsoft describes Windows as supporting cloud-based AI experiences; its 16 GB Copilot+ PC minimum applies to that class of PC and its other stated hardware requirements, not to all AI software.

Local models can have very different memory budgets

For Llama 2, Ollama’s model library gives general system-RAM guidance of at least 8 GB for 7B models, 16 GB for 13B models, and 64 GB for 70B models. Ollama also says higher quantization levels require more memory. These are not guaranteed working-set measurements for every setup, and they should not be treated as requirements for other models or AI apps. Model variant, context, GPU offload, and the programs running alongside the model can all affect the practical budget. See Ollama’s Llama 2 model library page.

Before buying RAM, check whether your computer supports it

A capacity recommendation does not tell you which memory to buy or whether an upgrade is possible. Laptop and desktop configurations vary, and some systems have memory soldered to the motherboard.

  • Look up your exact computer model in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation. Microsoft directs users to the PC maker for system-specific compatibility.
  • Confirm the supported memory generation and physical format, such as DIMM or SO-DIMM.
  • Check the maximum supported capacity, available slots, and whether existing memory is soldered or replaceable.
  • Only then compare a capacity that suits your workload with the memory your computer supports.

A search such as “32GB DDR5 RAM kit” is not enough to establish compatibility. The kit must match the system’s supported type, format, capacity, and upgrade options.
