Store them separately from ordinary food and drinks, reseal the package after every use, and put it away immediately. “Hemp” on a label does not mean a product is non-intoxicating.
How should you store hemp THC edibles at home?
- Keep the original packaging. Leave edibles in the child-resistant package they came in; do not move them into an unmarked jar, snack container, or other food packaging. Health Canada and New York State recommend original packaging, and the FTC advises resealing products after every use. Health Canada’s safe-storage guidance and the FTC’s packaging guidance explain these precautions.
- Put the package in locked storage. Choose a location that children and pets cannot access, and keep it out of sight as well as out of reach. A locked child-resistant cabinet or a medication lock box can add a barrier; keep the original package inside it. A lockbox is an optional tool, not a guarantee that access is impossible.
- Separate it from food and drinks. Do not store edibles on a pantry shelf or refrigerator shelf with snacks. Products shaped or packaged like familiar candy, cookies, or other branded foods can be especially easy for a child to mistake for an ordinary treat. The CDC’s cannabis poisoning guidance and FDA’s warning about children accidentally ingesting THC foods describe the risks of edible products and misleading packaging.
- Make putting it away part of using it. Reseal the package and return it to locked storage immediately after each use. Do not leave it unattended on a counter, bedside table, or in a bag a child or pet could reach. Tell other adults, caregivers, and visitors who may handle it where it belongs and how to secure it.
- Dispose of remnants securely. Put leftover edible pieces and packaging in a closed-lid trash container that children and pets cannot reach. Do not leave scraps where an animal can investigate them.
Child-resistant packaging is not the same as inaccessible storage. The CDC recommends locked childproof storage, while Health Canada also advises keeping cannabis locked away and out of sight and reach. America’s Poison Centers suggests considering a medication lock box or locking cabinet. Choose a setup adults in the household can operate consistently; no particular lock style has been shown here to prevent every possible access.
Why “hemp” is not a safe-storage signal
Some delta-8 THC products are labeled simply as “hemp,” a term that can lead consumers to associate them with non-intoxicating products. FDA notes that delta-8 products may be sold as gummies, chocolates, cookies, or candies. Treat hemp-derived THC edibles as intoxicating cannabis products for storage purposes, regardless of familiar flavors, shapes, or branding. The FDA’s delta-8 THC consumer information discusses labeling and product concerns; the CDC also notes that edible THC strength can be difficult to measure and may be unknown or inaccurately labeled.
Rules for hemp-derived THC, cannabis labeling, and lawful products vary by jurisdiction. Health Canada’s page refers to legal Canadian edible products in plain child-resistant packaging containing no more than 10 mg THC per package; that is Canadian context, not a universal U.S. limit. Storage precautions do not establish that a product is legal or verify its THC content.

When choosing a setup, consider who can reach the location, whether it can stay locked, whether the original package fits inside, and whether adults can use the lock reliably. If your usual cabinet is accessible, consider a medication lock box that fits the edible in its original package.
What should you do if a child may have eaten an edible?
Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 promptly; do not wait for symptoms. The number and advice apply in the United States. Call 911 for an emergency. FDA says a child with a reasonably suspected ingestion should be taken to a physician or emergency department, particularly if the child is acting unusually or is or feels sick. Do not try to diagnose or manage a possible poisoning at home.

Possible effects include vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, and unsteady coordination; severe poisoning can involve slowed breathing, seizure, or coma. If you can do so without delaying professional help, keep the package available so responders can see what the product contains. What if a dog or other pet ate a cannabis edible?
Contact a veterinarian, local animal emergency hospital, or animal poison control center immediately if a pet may have ingested cannabis. FDA lists possible effects including lethargy, depression, heavy drooling, vomiting, agitation, tremors, and convulsions. Keep the package available for the professional if doing so does not delay getting help. FDA’s cannabis and cannabis-derived products guidance provides additional information.

What exposure figures put the risk in context?
Poison-center reports and emergency department visits are different measures, covering different places and time periods. They should not be added together or treated as a single national rate.

- America’s Poison Centers reported 2,578 cannabis edible exposure cases in patients ages 0–19 through April 30, 2025, and 39,497 cases in that age range from 2019 to 2025. These are cases managed by poison centers, not a count of every exposure. The organization says its national poison data relies on self-reported calls and cannot fully verify each report. See America’s Poison Centers’ cannabis data and guidance.
- FDA reported 10,448 single-substance exposure cases involving only THC edible products from January 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022, as reported by U.S. poison control centers. FDA said 77% involved patients 19 or younger; 65% were unintentional exposures, and 91% of those unintentional exposures involved pediatric patients. This is historical data for a defined category and period, not a current annual rate. See the FDA warning.
- A 2026 New York State notice reported nearly 670 emergency department visits for cannabis-related poisonings among children ages 0–17 in New York State in 2024. The same notice said the Upstate New York Poison Center received over 200 calls involving pediatric exposure to edible cannabis in 2025.
