Compare products by the same kind of quantity and the same unit: for example, price per ounce by weight against price per ounce by weight. If a shelf label does not show a unit price, divide the package price by its quantity. A lower unit price can mean more product for your money when the products are genuinely comparable, but the total outlay, promotion terms, fees, and whether you can use the amount also matter.
How to compare unit prices
- Choose a matching measure. Compare weight with weight, volume with volume, or count with count. An ounce by weight is not the same measure as a fluid ounce by volume.
- Convert to the same unit. If one price is per pound and another per ounce, convert both to price per ounce or price per pound. One pound contains 16 ounces, so $4 per pound equals $0.25 per ounce. Likewise, convert package quantities such as 500 grams and 1 kilogram to a shared basis.
- Use the shelf unit price, if available. Check the label’s unit as well as its figure: “per ounce” may refer to weight or fluid volume. NIST’s 2025 Unit Pricing Guide recommends a consistent, meaningful unit within a product category.
- Calculate it when needed. Unit price = package price ÷ package quantity in the chosen unit. For example, a 24-ounce package priced at $4.80 costs $0.20 per ounce ($4.80 ÷ 24). This is an illustrative calculation, not a current product price. A phone calculator, mental arithmetic, or a basic calculator can help.
Unit pricing is useful for comparing different package sizes and retail channels, including online offers. NIST describes it as “one of the best tools available to consumers to facilitate value and price comparison.” Its guide is best-practice guidance for retailers, not a universal federal requirement.
Is the bigger package actually a better deal?
A lower price per matching unit means the package costs less for each unit of quantity, but it does not by itself settle which purchase is better for you. Consider these factors together:
- Compare like with like. A lower unit price does not prove that products have the same ingredients, concentration, quality, durability, or usefulness. Compare the attributes that matter for the purchase.
- Check the total outlay and quantity. A larger package may have a lower unit price but require more money upfront. Decide whether the extra quantity is worth paying for.
- Account for waste. If you cannot use a larger package before it spoils, expires, or otherwise becomes unsuitable, the unused amount reduces its practical value.
- Read promotion conditions. Confirm whether the displayed price requires buying multiple items, joining a rewards program, or meeting another condition.
How to spot a package-size change
When a familiar product’s package gets smaller, its appearance or shelf price may not make the change obvious. Check the package’s net contents and the shelf unit price rather than relying on the brand, package shape, or total price alone. The FTC explains that a shelf unit price—often shown per ounce, pound, or count—helps shoppers compare the amount received: The case of the shrinking packaging.

How to compare online offers
For online purchases, compare the full checkout cost, not just the listed item price or unit price. Depending on the order, shipping, delivery, handling, taxes, or other fees may change the better buy. Read the product description and the terms attached to promotional pricing. The FTC’s Online Shopping guidance recommends checking total cost, fees, deal terms, and descriptions.

Are stores required to show unit prices?
In the United States, there is no federal mandate requiring unit pricing, according to NIST SP 1181-2025. The guide reports that 16 states and three territories had unit-pricing laws or regulations in effect when it was published in June 2025; requirements vary by jurisdiction and may change. Do not assume every retailer or product must display a unit price. For a legal answer about a particular store or location, check the current rules in that jurisdiction.
