It is not a current market-share reading. Later estimates put AMD’s share higher, but the figures come from different research series and measures, so they should not be read as one continuous trend.
What Omdia’s 16% figure means
Omdia’s September 20, 2021 announcement described Q2 2021 as AMD’s best-ever quarter for server CPU market share and sales. The 16% figure appears in the announcement headline; its body does not repeat that percentage or provide a detailed share breakdown. Omdia’s announcement is therefore the source for the historical milestone, not evidence that AMD holds 16% today.
The broader server market was also strong that quarter. Omdia reported 3.4 million servers shipped worldwide in Q2 2021, matching the Q2 2020 volume record, and $21.5 billion in industry vendor revenue from those shipments. Its forecast at the time was for full-year 2021 server revenue to grow 11% to $92 billion; that was an outlook, not a reported final result.
Why AMD gained ground in Q2 2021
Omdia pointed to demand from hyperscale cloud providers, particularly Google, as a catalyst for AMD’s performance. It also said demand across server-market segments remained strong despite concerns about component constraints.

That was not a market made up only of x86 processors. Omdia noted that Arm-based vendors were gaining ground in hyperscale deployments, including AWS Graviton and systems using Ampere CPUs. It also mentioned momentum for Fujitsu and Huawei Arm CPUs. A share figure for x86 processors may therefore use a different denominator from one covering all server CPU architectures.
How later estimates compare
Subsequent figures show a much larger AMD presence, but they are not direct updates to Omdia’s Q2 2021 number. The reports below differ in date, research source, measure, or scope.

Why market-share figures can differ
Unit share is not revenue share
Unit share counts processors; revenue share compares the value of processor sales. In Q1 2026, Mercury Research figures reported by Tom’s Hardware put AMD at 33.2% of server CPU shipments and 46.2% of x86 server CPU revenue. Those percentages answer different questions and should always be labeled by measure.

The market included in the calculation matters
Mercury Research’s server unit estimate covers x86 server-class processors whether they are deployed in servers, networking equipment, or storage. AMD, as quoted by Tom’s Hardware in its account of the Q2 2022 figures, contrasted this with IDC’s estimated single- and dual-socket traditional-server total addressable market, which includes traditional servers only. A narrower traditional-server estimate and a broader server-class estimate can produce different shares.
Different research series are not automatically comparable
Omdia’s Data Centre Server Market Tracker and Mercury Research’s PC Processor estimates are separate research products. Without confirmation that their definitions and methods align, their numbers should be treated as distinct snapshots rather than points in a single time series. Architecture coverage matters too: x86-only estimates do not represent the same universe as estimates that include Arm processors.

What the milestone does—and does not—tell you
The Q2 2021 result captures a moment when hyperscale demand helped AMD reach a company high in Omdia’s server CPU market-share and sales reporting. It does not establish AMD’s current share, predict future growth, or by itself show how AMD compares in every server segment. For a current comparison, check the period, research provider, unit-versus-revenue measure, and processor architectures included in each estimate.
