How Exchange Operators Make Money: Trading, Clearing, and Market Data Explained

Exchange operators earn from transaction and clearing charges, market data, and related services. Their revenue depends on activity, fee structures, customer mix, and how rebates and pass-through costs are reported.

Exchange operators make money by charging for trading and clearing, selling market data, and providing related services. The mix varies by company: some run venues and clearing houses, while others also sell technology, connectivity, listings, or other services. That is why an exchange group’s revenue is more than a simple fee on each trade.

How exchange operators earn transaction and clearing revenue

When a venue facilitates a trade, it can charge participants according to its fee schedule. The fee may depend on the number of contracts, a transaction’s notional value, trading volume, product type, or customer category. CME Group, for example, says its fees can vary between members and non-members and that both activity and average fees influence revenue. Its filings combine transaction and clearing charges in one category, so that category should not be read as a pure execution-fee total.

CME’s category includes charges for trade matching, electronic-platform trading, clearing, portfolio reconciliation and compression, and risk mitigation. The company says most of this fee revenue is recognized when a trade is successfully executed, with a smaller settlement-related component recognized over the contract’s short lifecycle.

Trading and clearing are different stages

A trading venue matches orders or otherwise helps participants agree on a transaction. Clearing comes afterward: it helps validate obligations, manage exposures, and process a trade toward settlement. An exchange group may own both the venue and a clearing operation, but those roles are not interchangeable. CME notes that its cash-market matching service can let parties complete a trade bilaterally or through a third-party clearing house. Not every operator clears every trade itself, and a reported “clearing and transaction” figure may bundle several services.

Why gross trading figures can mislead

Some exchanges use rebates to attract orders or liquidity. Those payments affect the economics of trading, but they are not revenue retained by the operator. Nasdaq’s 2025 Form 10-K reports cash-equity trading revenue separately from transaction rebates and Section 31 fees. Nasdaq says the Section 31 fees are assessed to it and passed through to customers. ICE, by contrast, says its exchange transaction and clearing revenues are presented net of rebates. Compare filings only after checking how each company treats rebates and pass-through charges.

How exchanges make money from market data

Exchange operators can sell information produced by their markets, including quotes, trades, order-book information, summaries, and historical data. They may distribute it directly to subscribers or through third-party distributors, with terms that depend on the data product, customer, use, and distribution agreement.

CME describes real-time, delayed, and end-of-day quotations. Its 2024 filing says its basic real-time quote service charges a flat monthly fee for each screen or device displaying those quotes; that example does not establish a universal per-screen tariff for every product or customer. ICE’s 2025 filing describes proprietary real-time and historical pricing, order-book, and transaction information. Data is therefore a distinct business line, not simply an incidental by-product of trading.

Other services can add to revenue

Exchange groups may run several businesses alongside trading venues and clearing operations. Company filings describe services such as listings, technology, connectivity, routing, and other operational offerings. Cboe’s 2025 revenue presentation includes data-vantage and routing-and-clearing categories; CME reports an “other” category; and ICE describes data and connectivity services tied to its venues. The label “exchange operator” can therefore refer to a diversified market-infrastructure group rather than a single order book.

What reported revenue figures show

The figures below are from company annual filings, in millions of U.S. dollars. They illustrate the scale and reporting categories of two operators; they are not industry averages. The fiscal years are shown because figures from different periods should not be treated as directly comparable current totals.

Company and fiscal year Clearing and transaction Market data and information services Other or additional line items Total or net figure
CME Group, 2025 $5,281.1 million $803.1 million Other: $436.4 million Total revenue: $6,520.6 million
CME Group, 2024 $4,988.2 million $710.2 million Other: $431.7 million Total revenue: $6,130.1 million
Nasdaq, 2025 cash equities Cash-equity trading revenue: $1,847 million not stated in this cash-equity comparison (Nasdaq 2025 Form 10-K) Transaction rebates: $1,307 million; Section 31 fees: $366 million Cash-equity trading revenue net of transaction-based expenses: $515 million

The Nasdaq figures show why it matters whether a number is gross revenue or revenue after transaction-based expenses. They do not mean that every operator uses Nasdaq’s presentation. CME’s combined clearing-and-transaction category also cannot be separated into a standalone trading fee and a standalone clearing fee using these reported totals.

How to compare exchange operators fairly

A larger total revenue figure does not necessarily mean an operator earns more from a comparable exchange business. Before comparing companies, align the fiscal year and examine what each one owns and how it classifies revenue.

  • Revenue mix: separate transaction and clearing, market data, and other services where the filing allows it.
  • Activity and fee basis: check whether charges depend on contracts, notional value, transaction count, volume, product mix, or customer rates.
  • Net versus gross: establish whether rebates, regulatory assessments, or pass-through costs are included in or deducted from reported revenue.
  • Business scope: account for differences in cash equities, derivatives, fixed income, clearing, listings, technology, and data services.
  • Data distribution: consider direct subscriptions, resellers, connectivity, and product-specific usage terms.

Those differences affect what the totals mean: two companies can operate in the same broad industry while reporting unlike mixes of venue fees, clearing, data, and adjacent services.
