Oracle’s Utah Data Center: The $260 Million Proposal and the Later $285 Million Plan

In May 2008, Utah approved a conditional incentive offer worth more than $15 million to compete for an Oracle expansion in West Jordan. The initial announcement described a proposed $260 million data-storage center and 100 full-time jobs; four days later, Oracle’s plan was reported as a $285 million facility. Those were separate estimates made at the announcement stage—not proof of final construction cost or public spending.

What Utah and Oracle announced in May 2008

On May 16, 2008, the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board approved more than $15 million in state incentives to attract Oracle’s planned expansion. The offer was conditional on West Jordan providing a local incentive, according to Deseret News.

The same report described the proposed project as a $260 million data-storage center in West Jordan with 100 full-time employees. Board materials, as quoted by the newspaper, said Oracle “has found that Utah is its top choice for their new data center”; the report also identified Idaho as a competing location.

Why reports cite both $260 million and $285 million

On May 20, Deseret News reported that Oracle said it planned a $285 million West Jordan facility for global information technology. That later announcement-stage figure does not erase the earlier $260 million proposal estimate. The reports describe the project at different points and do not establish an audited final construction cost.

What the figures do—and do not—show

The project values and incentive amount are contemporaneous reported figures tied to a proposed expansion. They should not be treated as interchangeable: the $260 million and $285 million figures refer to the proposed facility at different announcement stages, while the more-than-$15-million figure refers to the state incentive offer.
