Re:

Does Starlink Work During Power or Internet Outages?

Starlink can bypass an outage at another internet provider, but it still needs working service and electricity. Here’s what backup power can—and cannot—do.

Starlink can keep working when another internet provider goes down, but only if your Starlink equipment has power and Starlink service is available. A grid outage will stop an unbacked Starlink setup because the dish, router, and power supply need electricity. A compatible UPS, battery, or generator may keep them running; runtime depends on the equipment and backup source.

Can Starlink work when your regular internet is down?

Potentially. If a cable, fiber, or other local internet provider has an outage, Starlink is a separate connection and may remain online. That depends on your Starlink equipment having power, your account and service being active, the dish having a clear view of the sky, and Starlink not having an outage of its own. Starlink lists power reliability as a factor affecting service in its Critical Information Summary, and its app identifies a Starlink-wide problem separately as a “SERVICE OUTAGE” (Starlink app alerts).

So, a failure at your usual provider does not itself mean Starlink has failed. But Starlink is not a guarantee of internet access during every outage: its own service, your equipment, and local conditions still matter.

Will Starlink work if the power goes out?

Not with a standard setup that has no backup power. Starlink needs electricity for its dish, Wi-Fi router, and power supply. If the grid goes down and those components lose power, the connection stops. Starlink specifically lists grid-power reliability and problems with a customer’s electrical power among factors that may affect performance in its Critical Information Summary.

With a UPS, battery, or generator

A backup source may keep Starlink working during a grid outage if it supplies compatible power to the actual equipment. Confirm the input requirements and load for your kit, and make sure the backup covers the components needed for the connection, including the router and power supply. Starlink’s published material does not establish a universal runtime for UPS units or batteries, so do not assume a particular number of hours without checking the capacity against your setup and intended use.

Starlink documents a battery-backup connection for one specific product: its Performance Advanced Power Supply can accept AC or DC input, or both at once when a battery backup is connected to its DC input. This guidance is for that named Performance accessory; it does not establish that the same connection or power arrangement works with every Starlink kit.

What to check before relying on backup power

Choose backup equipment based on your precise Starlink model and how long you want to stay online. Check:

  • Compatibility: Confirm the backup source’s output works with your kit’s power supply. Do not assume a battery’s DC output is compatible just because the Performance power supply supports a documented DC connection.
  • Load and coverage: Determine what equipment must stay powered, including the dish, router, and power supply, and whether the backup can supply that load.
  • Capacity and duration: Compare the backup’s usable capacity with the duration you need. Runtime is specific to the equipment and conditions; the cited Starlink documents do not provide a model-independent figure.
  • Practical constraints: For portable power, consider recharging access; for a generator, consider fuel and safe operation. These affect how long backup remains useful, not whether a particular source is compatible.

How to tell what kind of outage you have

Use the Starlink app and check your power source before treating every interruption as an internet-service failure. Starlink’s alert labels distinguish a “SERVICE OUTAGE” from “POWER DISCONNECT DETECTED”; the latter advises checking the power source and cable connections (Starlink app alerts).

  1. Check household power and equipment connections. Confirm the Starlink power supply and router are receiving power, then inspect the relevant cable connections if the app reports a power disconnect.
  2. Check app alerts and the Event Log. Look for a service outage or device event. Starlink says the Event Log includes router-related outages as well as terminal connectivity events (What is the Event Log?).
  3. Check your account and equipment. If Starlink remains offline, review service or account status and inspect the kit and cables as advised in Starlink’s offline troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Check sky visibility and weather. Obstructions can cause interruptions, and Starlink also identifies weather or temporary network issues as possible causes. Use the app’s obstruction information and its troubleshooting guidance (Starlink app alerts).
  5. Follow instructions for your kit. Use Starlink’s model-specific setup and troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming a third-party power supply or router follows the same steps (Starlink Help Center).
