To read a crypto chart, first identify what each mark represents and the timeframe it covers; then describe the visible price structure before looking at indicators. A chart shows past price movement, not a reliable promise of what comes next. This guide explains how to read crypto charts and candlestick charts without treating technical signals as trading instructions.

What a crypto chart shows

A chart places time on the horizontal axis and price on the vertical axis. Its format determines how price movement is displayed. Before interpreting a pattern, check the asset, price scale, and selected interval: the same market can look different when viewed over different periods.

Common chart types

Format What it displays Useful for
Line chart A simple line tracing price over time; the displayed line does not show every interval’s open, high, low, and close. Scanning the broad price path quickly.
Candlestick chart Each candle summarizes an interval’s open, high, low, and close. Examining price behavior within each interval.
Bar (OHLC) chart Each bar represents open, high, low, and close prices for an interval. Reviewing interval price detail in a format different from candles.

Fidelity’s guide to reading a crypto chart describes these chart formats and the information they show.

Check the timeframe before interpreting a pattern

A timeframe sets the length of the interval represented by each point, bar, or candle. A short-term chart gives a more detailed view of recent movement; a longer-term chart shows price structure across a broader period. Intraday and weekly charts therefore answer different descriptive questions.

State the timeframe when describing a chart, and use the same timeframe when comparing structures. A candle’s apparent importance depends on the interval it represents and the price action around it. Coinbase’s candlestick chart guide explains how to interpret candle information in context.

How to read a candlestick

A candlestick condenses four prices into one interval: open, high, low, and close (OHLC). The candle’s body marks the open and close; its upper and lower wicks extend to the interval’s high and low. The color convention can vary by platform, so check its legend rather than assuming a color means the same thing everywhere.

  • Body: compare the opening and closing prices for the interval.
  • Wicks: note how far price moved above or below the body during that interval.
  • Context: interpret the candle alongside neighboring candles, the timeframe, and the wider price structure—not as a stand-alone forecast.

Describe trend and consolidation

Trend terms describe visible past price structure. They do not establish what the market will do next.

Uptrend

An uptrend has a sequence of higher highs and higher lows: successive peaks and pullbacks occur at higher price levels.

Downtrend

A downtrend has lower highs and lower lows: successive peaks and troughs occur at lower price levels.

Sideways market

When price moves back and forth without a clear sequence of higher highs and higher lows or lower highs and lower lows, it may be described as moving sideways or consolidating.

Fidelity’s chart-reading guide uses these structural descriptions. They help summarize what a chart has done; they are not guarantees of a continuation or reversal.

Use support, resistance, and indicators as context

Support and resistance are common technical-analysis concepts for areas where price has previously encountered buying or selling pressure. They are analytical reference points, not boundaries that must hold: price can move through them, and readers may interpret the same chart differently.

Charts may also display moving averages, MACD (Moving Average Convergence/Divergence), and RSI (Relative Strength Index). These indicators summarize or transform price information according to their methods. Traders use them as analytical aids, but an indicator on its own is not a dependable buy or sell instruction and does not guarantee an outcome.

Separate observation from prediction

A useful chart description sticks to what is visible and names its scope. For example: “On the weekly chart, price has formed lower highs and lower lows over the displayed period.” That is an observation. “Price will keep falling” is a forecast, which the chart alone cannot establish.

  • Name the asset and timeframe you are viewing.
  • Describe the observed structure before adding an interpretation.
  • Treat levels and indicators as context rather than certainty.
  • Do not infer a strategy’s accuracy or likely profit from a chart pattern alone.

Remember the risks beyond the chart

Crypto prices can fluctuate widely. In its September 9, 2024 investor bulletin, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy wrote: “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” The bulletin also notes that spot crypto trading platforms may not be registered with the SEC and may not have the oversight that applies to registered intermediaries. That specific warning concerns the platforms described in the bulletin; it should not be generalized to every crypto venue or product. Read the SEC investor bulletin on exchange-traded products providing exposure to bitcoin and ether.

In a March 23, 2023 alert, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy described crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and volatile and advised investors to risk only money they can afford to lose entirely in a speculative investment. See the SEC alert on crypto asset securities. Chart literacy can help you describe price history, but it does not remove the risks of the asset or the venue.
