There is no universal cheapest way to commute. Your result depends on the route, how often you travel, local transit fares, whether you already own a car, and how carpool costs are split. Compare the costs that would actually change—not just gasoline against a transit ticket—to find which option saves you the most.
What counts as a commuting cost?
Set one commute pattern and one comparison period, such as a typical month. Use the same round-trip distance and number of commuting days for each option. Then include the expenses that apply to each mode:
- Driving alone: fuel, parking, tolls, and maintenance, plus any ownership costs that your decision to drive would actually add or avoid.
- Public transit: the fares or pass that fit your actual ride frequency.
- Carpooling: the shared expenses and the number of riders paying them.
- Biking: bicycle purchase or rental, maintenance, secure parking, and any available bike-share membership.
Separate full vehicle ownership cost from the marginal cost of taking a particular trip. If you already own a car and will keep it regardless, some fixed expenses may not change when you take transit one day. If choosing to drive means buying or keeping a vehicle you could otherwise do without, those ownership costs matter. A comparison should say which case it assumes.
Driving: gasoline is only part of the bill
Fuel is easy to see, but it does not capture the full cost of owning and operating a car. AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs fact sheet includes fuel, maintenance, insurance, licensing, registration and taxes, depreciation, and finance charges.

AAA estimated a weighted-average cost of $11,577 per year to own and operate a new vehicle in 2025, based on 15,000 miles per year. The estimate averaged five top-selling models in each of nine vehicle categories. It is a benchmark for selected new vehicles, not the price of one person’s commute or a bill that every driver will incur.
AAA’s 2026 estimate was $12,863 per year for owning and operating a new vehicle. AAA said methodology changes make the 2026 result not directly comparable with the 2025 figure, so the difference should not be read as a clean year-over-year increase. See AAA’s 2026 announcement for the estimate and caveat.

Public transit: use the fare that matches your routine
There is no single transit price to put into a national comparison. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes fare schedules that can include cash fares, farecards or smartcards, weekly or monthly passes, multiple-ride tickets, student fares, and memberships. Which costs least depends on your transit agency’s prices and how often you ride. BLS explains the fare categories in its public transportation CPI overview.
Compare the fare you would actually pay for the same number of commuting trips. A pass may suit frequent use, while individual fares or a multi-ride option may suit a different pattern. Do not compare a pass that covers repeated trips with the fuel cost of a single drive.

Carpooling: savings depend on what riders share
Carpooling can reduce the amount each person pays for shared driving expenses, but the result depends on the number of riders and which expenses they divide. Agree whether the split covers fuel only or also parking, tolls, and other costs. Then compare each rider’s share over the same period as the other modes.
If the driver would own the car and make the trip anyway, the cost split may look different from a carpool that makes a second vehicle unnecessary. The sources cited here do not establish a national carpool cost or savings figure, so a meaningful estimate requires your route and agreed cost-sharing arrangement.

Biking: count setup and recurring expenses
For a bicycle commute, include purchase or rental costs, maintenance, secure parking, and any local bike-share membership you would use. Spread a purchase cost across a period that makes sense for your own budget, and compare that amount with the same commute pattern used for driving and transit.
A bike-share option can have a different cost structure from owning a bicycle, and availability and prices are local. The available sources do not establish a national bicycle commuting cost or prove that buying a bike will save a particular amount.
How to compare your options fairly
- Write down the commute: round-trip distance, commuting days, and the period you want to compare.
- Price each feasible option for that pattern: include relevant driving expenses, the local transit fare or pass, each carpool rider’s agreed share, or bicycle-related costs.
- Choose the right car-cost view: use trip-related costs for a short-run decision if you will keep the car anyway; account for ownership costs that would change if the choice affects whether you buy or keep a vehicle.
- Compare totals over the same period: do not match a one-way fare to a round-trip fuel expense or a monthly pass to one isolated trip.
The IRS business mileage rate is not a substitute for this calculation. IRS Publication 463 says travel between home and a regular workplace is generally commuting, not business travel. Its mileage rate is for tax calculations in applicable situations, not a price estimate for your commute. See IRS Publication 463.
