How to Reduce Fuel Use When Gas Prices Rise

To use less gas in the car you already own, start with free changes: accelerate and brake smoothly, keep to a safe steady speed, avoid unnecessary idling and trips, and remove unneeded cargo. Then check tire pressure and follow the vehicle’s maintenance schedule. The savings vary with your car, route, weather, and current habits, so published percentages are estimates—not a guarantee of what you will save at today’s pump prices.

Which free driving changes use less gas?

Accelerate and brake smoothly

Look ahead, leave room to slow gradually, and avoid rapid starts or hard braking when conditions allow. Aggressive driving can reduce fuel economy by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 guidance. These are upper estimates, not results every driver should expect.

Choose a safe, steady speed

Does driving slower save gas? Often, yes: fuel economy typically falls as speed rises, and the Department of Energy says mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. That does not mean driving below the flow of traffic or ignoring posted limits. Choose a legal, safe speed and avoid unnecessary acceleration.

Older agency guidance translated extra speed into dollar costs per gallon, but those calculations used dated fuel-price assumptions. The general relationship between speed and fuel use is more useful than treating an old dollar estimate as a current promise.

Switch off rather than idle when appropriate

Idling can use about a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and whether air conditioning is running, according to the Department of Energy’s 2022 guidance. The Alternative Fuels Data Center advises switching off a personal vehicle when parked or stopped for more than 10 seconds, except in traffic. Follow local laws and your owner’s manual, and do not switch off where doing so could create a safety hazard.

Make fewer or combined trips

Combine errands into one outing when practical, carpool, or use public transit. For short journeys, walking or cycling may avoid using the car altogether. These options depend on distance, accessibility, weather, safety, and what is available where you live; there is no single alternative that works for every trip.

How do cargo and roof carriers affect fuel use?

Remove heavy items you do not need and take off roof cargo when you are not using it. The Department of Energy’s 2021 Consumer Guide estimates that an extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel economy by around 1%, with a greater effect on smaller vehicles.

A large, blunt roof cargo box creates additional aerodynamic drag. The Department of Energy’s 2017 Alternative Fuels Data Center fact sheet reports reductions of 2%–8% in city driving, 6%–17% on highways, and 10%–25% at interstate speeds of 65–75 mph. These estimates refer to a large blunt roof box; a rear-mounted carrier generally has a smaller effect. Actual results depend on the vehicle, carrier, and speed.

What should you check on the car?

Set tire pressure to the vehicle’s specified level

Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the pressure listed on the driver-side door placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. A basic tire-pressure gauge can help you check it; the gauge does not save fuel by itself. The Department of Energy’s July 2022 guidance estimates that correct inflation improves mileage by an average of 0.6%, potentially up to 3%. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed gain.

Keep up with scheduled maintenance

Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and have a suspected fault diagnosed instead of replacing parts speculatively. The Department of Energy’s 2022 guidance reports an average 4% mileage improvement from proper vehicle maintenance, while noting that a serious problem such as a faulty oxygen sensor can have a much larger effect. The average is not a forecast for every car; the impact depends on the vehicle’s condition and the work needed.

  • Portable Design: This compact and lightweight gauge can be easily moved between different vehicles or removed when not needed. This fuel economy monitor can easily fit into your armrest box.
  • Universal Compatibility: Suitable for vehicles using gasoline, diesel, water, and lubricants, making it suitable for a wide range of automotive applications.

Use the octane the manufacturer specifies

Check the owner’s manual or fuel-door instructions. Federal Trade Commission guidance says most cars use regular octane and that using a higher octane than recommended offers no benefit. Requirements vary by vehicle, so do not assume regular fuel is right for every model.

How should you judge a claimed fuel-saving fix?

Be skeptical of devices or products promising dramatic, guaranteed mileage improvements. The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2004 that the Environmental Protection Agency had tested more than 100 purported gas-saving devices and found very few benefits; some could damage engines or increase emissions. That history is a reason to look for credible evidence rather than relying on a seller’s promise.

There is no universal amount a driver will save when gas prices rise. Your result depends on local prices, the car, route, weather, and how you drive now.
