Plan an RV road trip by confirming a legal, available overnight site that fits your rig for each critical night—then build the driving day around that stop. There is no universal reservation window, and a map pin or parking lot is not proof that overnight stays are allowed. Check the current campground or land-manager listing, vehicle limits, dates, and rules before you commit.
Start with the constraints that shape your stops
Before choosing overnight sites, write down your must-see destinations and travel dates, then record your RV’s actual length, height, width, and weight. Include practical needs such as hookups, a dump station, accessible facilities, or a late arrival. These details affect whether a site fits and whether the route is suitable for the vehicle.
Keep services and access details on a verification list: a directory entry or map pin does not establish that a facility is available on your dates or that your RV can reach it.
Choose real overnight sites, not just overnight areas
Use the route to identify sensible regions for stopping, then find a named campground or an alternative whose manager explicitly allows overnight stays. Recreation.gov recommends researching destinations, filtering campgrounds by details such as vehicle length, and reviewing visitor feedback. It describes dispersed camping as overnight stays outside a developed campground and notes that it requires research; do not assume that a nearby public-land area permits it.

For any proposed private lot, rest area, travel plaza, or public-land location, ask the property owner or land manager whether overnight stays are permitted and check applicable state and local rules. Rules vary by place. For example, Joshua Tree National Park prohibits sleeping in a vehicle outside a campground within the park; that is a park-specific rule, not a nationwide standard. Recreation.gov says facility-specific rules supersede its general policies, and that facilities set their own booking windows and maintain their own details. Check both its reservation policies and the individual facility listing. General cancellation rules are a starting point: fees, deadlines, and the consequences of a late cancellation depend on the booking and reservation.
Book the nights with the fewest alternatives first
Prioritize nights near popular attractions, during peak periods or holidays, and at destinations with few sites that fit your RV. Recreation.gov advises that many public-land campgrounds and activities must be booked in advance, often six months ahead, while some opportunities appear only weeks or days beforehand. Its guidance is not a universal opening schedule: check the exact destination, dates, and listing for the release window. Recreation.gov’s road-trip planning guidance.

Once you identify the site’s reservation schedule, note when booking opens and set a reminder. If a suitable site is unavailable, check whether the land manager lists other campgrounds or later openings; do not treat an unverified parking area as an equivalent fallback.
Build driving days around confirmed stops—and keep a lawful fallback
Set each day’s driving plan around the confirmed overnight site rather than choosing a mileage target first. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal safe daily mileage number. Leave time for slower travel, arrival procedures, and the possibility that conditions affect your schedule.

Where arrival time or route conditions are uncertain, identify a second option and verify its permission, fit, and availability in advance. Recheck closures, weather, and road restrictions before leaving and during the trip. A fallback is useful only if overnight stays are allowed there and the site can accommodate your RV.

Use RV navigation as a screening aid, not a guarantee
An RV GPS navigator can help screen route candidates and locate campground or service options. Garmin says the RV 795 can suggest custom routes based on vehicle size and weight and provide warnings for conditions such as steep grades and sharp curves. Its directory includes RV parks and services, KOA campground content, and national parks. However, the device’s owner’s manual cautions that vehicle profiles might not be accounted for in all route suggestions. Use posted signs and current road conditions, and verify restrictions independently; a GPS suggestion does not prove a road is safe or permitted for your particular rig.
