AI toys are not automatically safe for children. Tests of three conversational toys found inappropriate answers, unreliable voice recognition and privacy concerns, while regulators warn about risks such as passive listening and unauthorized access. Common Sense Media recommends that children age 5 and under avoid AI toys and urges caution for ages 6–12. That is the organization’s guidance—not a universal legal age limit or a finding about every toy. Parents can make a more informed choice by checking how a toy listens, what data it collects, how controls work, and whether its AI features are worth those trade-offs.
What counts as an AI toy—and what has been tested?
Here, an AI toy means a physical toy—such as a stuffed animal, robot, doll or voice-activated device—that uses AI to converse with a child. Many connect to the internet and use voice recognition; some listening modes can collect information in the home.
Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute assessed Grem, Bondu and Miko 3 in a report updated January 22, 2026. Researchers used accounts set to ages 6–13, tried structured and natural voice interactions, reviewed privacy policies and data practices, and examined developmental fit, parental controls, content safety and technical performance. The assessment focused on conversational toys with voice interaction; it did not evaluate traditional electronic toys without AI or screen-based AI products. Its findings should not be treated as a verdict on every AI toy.
What the safety findings do—and do not—show
Some tested answers were not appropriate for children
Common Sense Media judged 27% of the outputs in its tests of the three toys inappropriate for children. The assessment describes content involving self-harm, drugs, mature topics, inappropriate boundaries, risky advice and unsafe roleplay. This is a result from those tests, not a market-wide rate or a prediction of what any individual child will hear.

Voice and answer quality can also fail
The assessment found voice-recognition problems, inappropriate activations and inaccurate responses. These failures matter because a toy may misunderstand a child, respond when it was not meant to, or give an answer that sounds confident without being reliable. The results do not establish that every model behaves the same way.
Parent concerns are widespread, but are not product test results
In figures reported in Common Sense Media’s January 22, 2026 press release, 83% of surveyed parents said they were at least moderately concerned about AI toys collecting personal information; 80% were at least moderately concerned about cybersecurity risks, and 79% about difficulty setting limits on children’s use. These are poll results, not independent measures of how often a toy causes harm.

In the same press release, Common Sense Media founder and CEO James P. Steyer said, “Most toys are required to undergo rigorous safety testing before they hit the market, but we still lack meaningful child safeguards for AI.” He added that parents should proceed with caution and learn the facts before deciding what is right for their children. This is Steyer’s characterization, not a regulator’s finding.
How to think about age guidance
Common Sense Media’s January 2026 recommendation is to avoid AI toys for children age 5 and under and use caution for ages 6–12. The organization points to young children’s developing understanding of relationships and trust, and the possibility that they may not reliably distinguish an AI from a person. It also raises concerns about toys presented as friends or companions and about replacing human interaction. This is guidance from Common Sense Media, not pediatric consensus or a legal rule.

An age label is only one input. The assessment notes that some toys labeled 13+ may still have cuddly, colorful designs or marketing likely to appeal to younger children. Consider the actual conversation style and features, data practices, advertising, and your child’s needs—not just the number on the package.
Check privacy and security before buying or setting up a toy
Do not assume that packaging or an age label answers the important data questions. Read the privacy information and terms, and look for clear answers to these questions:

- Sensors and recording: Does the toy have a microphone, camera or other sensor? What triggers recording, and can you see when it is active?
- Information collected: Does it collect voice recordings, transcripts, account details, location or behavioral data?
- Storage and access: Where is information stored, how long is it kept, who can access it, and with whom is it shared?
- Parent controls: Can you review and delete recordings or other child data? Are controls available both during setup and later?
- Disable options: Can you switch off listening or connectivity on the device itself? Does it clearly signal when listening or recording is active?
- Security and track record: Does the provider explain how data is protected in storage and during transfer? Search for credible complaints or reported security issues, and check for recalls.
The FTC’s consumer guidance likewise advises parents to investigate the product and company, look for complaints and security or privacy information, check recalls, inspect microphones, cameras and parental controls, and understand collection, storage, sharing, access and deletion. A vague or hard-to-find answer is a reason to pause rather than assume a safeguard exists.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Children’s Code materials address connected devices likely to be accessed by children, including expectations around data handling, transparency and security. The ICO warns that connected toys can affect privacy when they collect information in a child’s home without adequate transparency or safeguards—for example, through passive listening—or share information across a device network. Its guidance recommends clear information at purchase and setup, child-appropriate defaults, explanations of data use when relevant, and visible indications of collection.
The ICO’s connected-toy design guidance describes measures such as encrypting data in transfer, protecting against unauthorized access or microphone takeover, showing when recording or collection is happening, clearly indicating when listening mode is active, and making it easy to switch listening or collection off. The ICO page says that guidance is under review following changes made by the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the live regulator guidance for the latest position. These recommendations do not certify any particular toy.
Decide whether the AI feature is worth the trade-off
Compare toys on the same practical questions rather than assuming that a familiar brand, appealing design or age label makes one safer. There is no universal safest model or current comparative ranking established by the three-product assessment.
- Does the stated age range fit the toy’s actual design, conversation and marketing?
- Can you tell when its microphone is listening, and can you disable listening or connectivity easily?
- Are collection, retention, sharing and deletion practices clear?
- Are parent controls usable, and can you manage them after setup?
- Does the provider explain security protections and updates?
- How does the toy handle sensitive prompts, and what happens when voice recognition fails?
- Does the AI add enough value for your child to justify the data and relationship trade-offs?
If those answers are unclear or the AI feature adds little, choosing a traditional toy, a book or an activity is a reasonable alternative. Common Sense Media suggests these as alternatives or complements, especially when an AI feature does not offer clear value for the child.
