Before buying a used Caterpillar machine, verify the exact unit’s identity and records, inspect and operate it, and compare its likely total cost—not just its asking price. A Cat Certified Used designation adds a defined inspection and protection program, but it does not replace checking the machine’s report, suitability, and written coverage terms.
Start with the machine’s identity and history
Ask the seller for the exact model, serial number, configuration, operating hours, and included attachments. Match the serial number on the machine to the listing and documents; a report for a similar model is not evidence about the specific unit you may buy.
Request available service and maintenance records, repair and parts-replacement history, incident history, fluid-sampling results, any inspection report, and details of remaining warranty or protection. Ask what work was completed to prepare the machine for sale, with itemized repairs and replacements where available. Compare paperwork with the machine’s current condition rather than treating records as proof that it is sound. Caterpillar recommends obtaining records and conducting your own inspection and test drive (Caterpillar’s used-equipment guidance).
Ask about prior use and ownership. Cat Certified Used machines may come from dealer rental fleets, trade-ins, or lease returns; some rental machines may have complete service histories available. The source alone does not establish the condition of an individual machine (Caterpillar’s Certified Used overview).

Inspect the machine in person
Do a walkaround before startup, then evaluate the machine under safe conditions. If you lack the training or tools to assess heavy equipment, arrange for a qualified independent inspector. A buyer’s visual check is not equivalent to the trained-inspector process used for Cat certification.
Check for visible damage and wear
- Look for leaks, damaged or cracked hoses, cracked glass, missing components, uneven wear, and signs of repair or impact.
- On wheeled machines, examine tires for uneven wear, bulges, cracks, and missing bolts. Caterpillar recommends using a tread gauge to assess tire wear; it does not measure tracked undercarriage wear.
- On tracked equipment, inspect the undercarriage closely. Cat’s certified inspection preparation may use track-measuring or ultrasonic wear tools; an inspector’s measurements are more informative than judging wear by appearance alone.
Evaluate the engine, transmission, hydraulics, and attachments
- Start and operate the machine where safe and appropriate. Watch for warning or error messages, abnormal noise, smoke, leaks, and trouble engaging or moving.
- Inspect hydraulic cylinders, hoses, the pump compartment, and attachments for leaks, scoring, wear, or damage. Caterpillar notes that hydraulic repairs can be time-consuming and costly.
- If qualified and safe, operate the controls and functions through a representative work cycle. A test drive or operational test can reveal problems that a stationary inspection will not.

What Cat Certified Used means—and what it does not
Cat Certified Used is a specific Caterpillar dealer designation, not a synonym for any used Cat machine. Caterpillar describes a process that can include up to a 140-point inspection, configuration and history review, electronic checks, operational testing, component ratings, and preparation work. The inspection page says all components must rate “Good” on Caterpillar’s standard used inspection form for the machine to carry the designation. It also specifies at least 50% life remaining for undercarriage or tires and ground-engaging tools (Certified Used Inspection).
Those are program criteria, not a promise of a particular remaining service life or proof that the machine suits your workload. Request the inspection report for the exact serial-numbered unit. Caterpillar says inspectors review configuration, additions, service and repair history, fluid samples, and service codes, then walk around, start, maneuver, and operationally test the machine. The standard rates components Good, Fair, or Poor: Good means no repair or replacement is needed; Fair means repair is appropriate but replacement is not needed; Poor means replacement is needed. The page says critical components and Fair or Poor items receive remarks and photographs. Clarify any mismatch between the report, listing, and machine as it stands today.

A machine advertised simply as used is not thereby certified. Cat’s general used inventory includes machines with different ages and hours, so assess each unit on its own records, condition, and suitability.
Get the protection terms in writing
Caterpillar says Cat Certified Used equipment is protected for at least 12 months or a specified number of operating hours. The exact details vary by product, application, and location; the designation alone does not establish the coverage for the unit you are considering (Caterpillar’s Certified Used warranty information).

Before you rely on protection in your purchase decision, obtain the applicable written terms from an authorized dealer. Confirm covered components, the time or operating-hour limit, exclusions, transfer conditions, and how to make a claim. Ask separately whether any original warranty remains and whether it applies to you.

Cat Financial financing availability and terms should be verified for your location and the current offer (Caterpillar financing information). Do not treat financing availability or certification as a substitute for deciding whether the machine and its likely upkeep fit your budget.
Use fluid analysis as one piece of evidence
Condition monitoring can combine inspections, fluid analysis, electronic equipment information, and equipment history. Cat S·O·S fluid analysis can provide information about oil and coolant condition and component wear (Cat S·O·S Services). A sample result should be interpreted alongside the maintenance records, operating checks, and physical inspection; it cannot establish overall condition by itself.
