There is no clear “best” AI toy for every child. Before buying one, check what it hears and stores, how it handles conversations, whether its content and design suit your child’s age, and what parents can control. A January 2026 Common Sense Media assessment of three voice-interacting toys raised concerns about emotional attachment, children’s data collection, and unreliable responses; it does not establish that every AI toy has the same risks.
What counts as an AI-powered toy?
For this buying guide, the central concern is a toy that uses an internet connection and voice interaction to respond conversationally. Common Sense Media assessed Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3 as educational tools and companions, examining response reliability, content safety, developmental fit, privacy practices, attachment risks, and parent oversight. Its findings apply to the products and age groups it evaluated, not every electronic learning toy or product marketed as AI-powered.
A toy’s AI label does not tell you how it works in practice. Look for the specific features—such as a microphone, camera, voice recognition, internet connection, or conversational service—and evaluate each rather than relying on the marketing description.
Check privacy before setup
FTC consumer guidance recommends asking what a connected toy can hear or see, what information it collects, where that information is stored, how it is shared, who can access it, and whether parents can inspect and delete it. These questions matter before purchase because setup choices and default settings may shape what the toy collects.

- Sensors and indicators: Does the toy have a microphone or camera? How can you tell when either is active?
- Information collected: Does the product explain what it captures during play, including voice or conversation data?
- Storage and sharing: Does the policy say where information is kept, how long it is retained, and whether it is shared with others?
- Access and deletion: Can a parent review stored information and request its deletion?
- Setup and controls: Does the toy require an account or app, and can you change privacy settings or disable features?
FTC guidance explains that COPPA can require covered operators collecting personal information from children under 13 to disclose privacy practices, obtain parental consent, secure information, and provide deletion rights. Whether the law applies to a particular service depends on the facts; use the FTC’s current material for legal interpretation. FTC: Children’s Privacy.
Evaluate the conversation, not just the demo
A polished demonstration does not establish that a toy will consistently understand a child or respond appropriately in ordinary use. Ask how voice recognition and answers perform, what safeguards apply to sensitive topics, and what the toy does when it cannot answer reliably. Common Sense Media’s assessment considered both reliability and content safety, making them useful product-specific questions rather than assumptions to make from an AI label.

- Can the manufacturer explain how the toy handles misunderstandings or unexpected questions?
- Are content safeguards described clearly, including limits on topics or responses?
- Can parents review or manage conversations and settings?
- Does the toy encourage play and learning without asking a child to depend on it emotionally?
Consider companion features and developmental fit
Some conversational toys are designed to feel like companions. In its assessment, Common Sense Media reported attachment-oriented design features in the tested products and raised concern that young children might confuse AI with real people. This is a finding about those products and age groups, not a universal conclusion about all AI toys. Still, it is worth asking whether the toy’s language encourages a child to treat it as a friend, confidant, or person—and whether that framing is suitable for your child.
Compare the manufacturer’s intended age with your child’s developmental needs, interests, and ability to understand that the toy is not a person. UNICEF’s child-centered AI guidance includes children’s development and well-being alongside safety, privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, and inclusion. UNICEF also recognizes possible learning and accessibility benefits, including for children with disabilities; those possibilities do not prove that a particular toy produces those benefits.

Check physical safety and age labeling
Conversational suitability is only one part of age fit. Follow the age guidance and safety information on the packaging, and choose toys that match the child’s interests and abilities. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping small balls and toys with small parts away from children under three; toys with choking hazards for children under three must carry age labels. Check the CPSC’s current advice and product-specific safety information before buying: CPSC toy safety guidance.

What current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Common Sense Media’s January 2026 assessment covered three conversational toys: Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3. It raises product-specific concerns about reliability, privacy, and attachment, but does not name a winner or establish that all AI toys share those shortcomings. It is not a comparison of every screen-based or electronic learning toy, and it does not independently validate every vendor’s current claims. Product features, policies, and availability can change, so verify them directly before purchase.
Policy guidance is also evolving. UNICEF’s third edition of its AI-and-children guidance addresses generative AI and AI companions as well as child-centered principles. Its June 2026 policy brief discusses conversational and companion-like systems and compares regulatory approaches across six jurisdictions as of May 2026; UNICEF says its recommendations reflect international best practice and are not a compliance checklist for national law. In the UK, a government announcement on 6 July 2026 opened a call for evidence on toy safety, including emerging risks from AI-enabled toys, with submissions due 6 October 2026. That announcement describes a policy review, not a new rule already in force.
