Set up an AI-powered toy as both a plaything and a connected device: check what it senses and sends, secure the adult account and Wi-Fi, complete setup yourself, find the privacy and stop controls, and supervise early conversations. There is no universal sequence—follow the current manual, privacy notice, app permissions, and settings for the exact model.
1. Check the toy’s features and data practices before turning it on
Connected toys use internet functionality and may process personal data. Before setup, find the exact model’s manual, privacy notice, app listing, support page, age recommendation, and any safety or recall notice. The FTC’s smart-toy checklist recommends checking what a device records, how data is stored, shared, and deleted, and whether parents can manage it.
Make a short inventory of the toy’s features:
- Does it have a microphone, camera, motion sensor, or location feature?
- Does it connect to Wi-Fi or a companion app, and does it require an account or subscription?
- Does it support voice chat, messaging, calling, or open-ended AI conversation?
- Who receives recordings, transcripts, images, or other information? Can staff or service providers access them?
- How long is information retained? Is it used to personalize or train a service? Can a parent review and delete it?
Do not assume the toy maker is the only recipient. Apps can include third-party software components. In a 2025 U.S. enforcement action involving Apitor robot toys, the FTC alleged that a third-party software development kit enabled precise location collection through the app without required parental notice and consent. That case concerns those products and allegations; it does not establish that every connected toy collects location. FTC: Apitor action.
In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says privacy information for connected products should be available before purchase and setup, and should explain the roles of parties processing transmitted information. The ICO notes that its connected-toy guidance is under review following the UK Data (Use and Access) Act; check its current guidance for legal interpretation. ICO: Connected toys.

2. Secure the adult account, network, and app
Use an account controlled by a parent or caregiver, with a unique password. Enable additional account security if offered. Use password-protected home Wi-Fi and do not give the child the network password. Download the companion app only from the official app store or the manufacturer’s source.
Review the app’s permission requests before granting access. Allow only what is needed for features your family intends to use; for example, do not enable location or contacts just because the app asks. The ICO identifies security risks including unauthorized access, microphone takeover, and location tracking, and calls for appropriate security such as encryption in transit. Its connected-toy guidance recommends regular checks that security measures remain in place and work.
3. Complete onboarding as the caregiver
Read consent and permission screens rather than tapping through them. Put the adult’s details in the caregiver account, provide only child-profile information the service needs, and decline optional sharing, location, or communications features unless you have a clear reason to use them. A single consent checkbox should not be treated as an answer to every privacy question.

In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) can apply when a child-directed online service collects personal information from children under 13. For details about when notice and verifiable parental consent are required, consult the FTC’s children’s privacy guidance.
Miko 3 setup example
Miko’s guide illustrates why instructions vary by model. The manufacturer says to charge Miko 3 for at least 30–60 minutes before setup using the included USB-C cable; for best results, it recommends a 15 W (5 V, 3 A) or higher power adapter. Its steps include connecting to password-protected Wi-Fi, installing the Miko App, registering guardian details, adding a child profile, completing verified parental consent, pairing with a six-digit code, setting a four-digit parent passcode, and installing a prompted software update. The guide says the robot can remain connected to power during setup. Check the current Miko 3 setup guide; screens and instructions can change.
4. Locate privacy controls and practice stopping collection
Before handing over the toy, find the settings for microphone or listening mode, camera, AI conversation, calls or contacts, location, chat history, data retention, and deletion. Test how to pause listening or disconnect the toy from the internet. If there is a physical mute switch or clear connection-off setting, make sure you know how it works.

The ICO recommends an obvious indication when personal data is being collected, a clear signal when listening mode is active, and a simple way to turn listening or connectivity off. It also says products should avoid collecting data in passive listening mode. Show the child what the active listening or recording indicator looks like and agree on times to switch the toy off, such as bedtime or private family conversations. ICO: Connected toys.
If the toy supports multiple child profiles or age settings, check that the profile belongs to the child using it and that its defaults are appropriate. The ICO’s Children’s Code guidance recommends anticipating users of different ages and making default settings suitable for children.
5. Set boundaries for AI conversations
Explain in age-appropriate language that the toy is software, not a person. Tell the child not to share private information and to come to a trusted adult if the toy says something confusing or upsetting, or asks for personal details. Supervise early use, especially if the toy offers open-ended conversation, camera, messaging, or video features. Review any topic filters, conversation controls, and time limits the product provides.

Moderation claims are not proof that every generated response will be suitable. The FTC’s September 2025 inquiry asked seven chatbot companies about testing and monitoring potential negative effects on children, harm mitigation, limits on use, disclosures, and handling of conversation data. Use the privacy notice and app settings to find the routes for viewing, managing, and deleting a child’s information. Check whether deletion applies to recordings, transcripts, profile data, and other stored information, and whether there are stated retention periods. Do not assume a parent dashboard exposes every data control; contact the manufacturer if the policy describes a right or option that is not visible in the app.
Miko’s privacy policy, last updated 30 March 2026, says it applies to Miko 3 and Miko Mini, describes collecting and recognizing children’s face and voice data along with demographic information and preferences, and says parents can delete a child’s information through the mobile app. It also says biometric data may be stored for up to three years after last use. These are the manufacturer’s statements; review its current privacy policy and app controls before deciding whether those practices fit your family.

7. Recheck settings after updates
After a firmware or app update, revisit permissions, privacy settings, and account access. Periodically check the current privacy notice, the available review and deletion controls, and whether new features have appeared. An update can change what the toy or app does, so confirm that the settings still match the way your family wants to use it.
What product claims and policy updates do—and do not—tell you
Miko describes Miko 3 as an AI robot for children aged 5–10, with parent-app controls and age-appropriate moderated conversations. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not independent verification that its generated responses are always safe. Miko 3 product page.
In the UK, the Department for Business and Trade and the Office for Product Safety and Standards announced a call for evidence on toy safety, including AI-enabled toys, on 6 July 2026. The announcement said the call would remain open until 6 October 2026. It is a policy evidence-gathering step, not a new rule by itself; check the announcement for any later results.
