There is no single best time-tracking app for every freelancer. If you mainly need to capture work, sort it by client or project, and produce billable-hour reports, compare Toggl Track and Clockify. If you want tracked hours to flow into client invoices, consider FreshBooks. Choose based on how you actually record time, the reports and billing handoff you need, and the features included in the plan—not on a generic ranking.
Start with the job you need the software to do
Time tracking is useful for freelance finances when it creates records you can act on: hours assigned to the right client and project, a clear distinction between billable and non-billable work, and a report or invoice workflow that fits how you charge. A timer alone does not ensure accurate billing; you still need a recording habit and consistent project labels.
- For tracking and reporting: compare a dedicated tracker such as Toggl Track or Clockify.
- For time tracking tied to invoicing: look at FreshBooks, which documents pulling logged hours onto a client invoice.
- For fixed-fee or retainer work: check whether the reports show estimates versus actuals and whether budgets or project costs are visible in the plan you would use.
How the main options differ
| Tool | What its vendor describes | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Toggl Track | Timer and manual time tracking across web, mobile, desktop, and browser extensions; billable and non-billable hours; rates assigned to tasks or projects; reports and running billable-income totals. Its consultant page also describes calendar-derived entries, desktop keyword rules, a private activity timeline, budget alerts, rates at multiple levels, client-ready reports, and estimates-versus-actuals. These are vendor-described features, not independently tested results. | Clockify | One-click timer, manual entry for missed time, organization by clients, projects, and tasks, billable rates, and summary or weekly reports that can be linked or exported as PDF, CSV, or Excel. Its freelancer page also mentions desktop and mobile apps, reminders, and idle detection. Clockify freelancer page. | A candidate if manual catch-up and shareable or exportable reports matter to your workflow. |
| FreshBooks | Timer or completed-hour logging through mobile or web, a Chrome timer, and tracking against projects and clients. Its FAQ says logged hours can be automatically pulled onto a client invoice. | Harvest | FreshBooks’ 2026 comparison characterizes Harvest as a paid option for small freelance teams that want time tracking and invoicing. FreshBooks comparison. | Worth considering for a small team, but verify its current capabilities and plan terms directly. |
These descriptions do not establish which app is most accurate or easiest for a particular freelancer. Toggl’s consultant page displays a customer testimonial from Greg Martel, COO and co-founder of Newlogic: “It’s extremely easy and intuitive, as well as non-invasive. That’s why there was no resistance when we introduced the tool to our team.” That is a testimonial hosted by the vendor, not an independent assessment. Toggl consultant page.
Choose by your billing workflow
If you invoice from reports
A standalone tracker may be enough if it lets you assign hours to clients and projects, set the rates you use, and produce a report your client or bookkeeping process can use. Toggl and Clockify both describe billable reporting; compare the exact report formats and access controls you need before committing.

If you want hours to become invoice line items
FreshBooks documents a route for pulling logged hours onto a client invoice. That can reduce handoffs when the same system is meant to track time and create invoices. Confirm that the workflow matches your invoicing practices and the plan available to you.
If you work on retainers or fixed-fee projects
Time still matters when you do not bill every hour directly: it can show how much work a project consumes against an estimate or budget. Toggl’s consultant page describes budget alerts and estimates-versus-actuals. Check whether those controls are available at the plan level you are considering, and whether they answer the questions you use to manage project profitability.

Evaluate the tracker before you move your records into it
- Test your real capture habit. Decide whether you reliably start and stop timers, enter time afterward, or need calendar-assisted capture. A missed entry is not fixed by an app having more features.
- Check the labels you need. Make sure you can assign entries to the clients, projects, and tasks you use, and distinguish billable from non-billable time.
- Verify rates and reports. If client or project rates vary, check whether the plan supports the rate structure you need. Review a sample report or export for the level of detail you send to clients or use for bookkeeping.
- Confirm the billing handoff. Decide whether a shareable report is sufficient or whether logged hours must transfer into an invoice or accounting workflow.
- Check platforms and integrations. Confirm support for your actual web, desktop, or mobile setup and the specific integrations you rely on. If offline use or syncing is important, verify how it works directly with the vendor.
- Review privacy and monitoring features. Consider whether activity capture, keyword rules, or idle detection suit your work and privacy expectations. Do not pay for employee-monitoring features you will not use.
What the published prices can—and cannot—tell you

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to decide
Start with two candidates that match your workflow, then run the same small test in each: track a few representative tasks, assign them to the right client and project, mark billable status, and produce the report or invoice handoff you would actually use. Compare the amount of cleanup required and whether the output answers your billing or project-control questions. This is a selection method, not a claim that one product has been independently tested or outperforms another.
