John Ternus became Apple’s CEO on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook, who is now the company’s executive chair. The change also put Ternus on Apple’s board and made Arthur Levinson lead independent director. Apple announced the succession on April 20, 2026, and said its board approved the plan unanimously.

What changed at Apple on September 1, 2026?

The leadership transition is complete: Ternus is CEO, Cook is executive chair, and Levinson is lead independent director. Cook has not left Apple. The company says he will assist with certain matters, including engagement with policymakers around the world. Apple’s April 20 announcement set out the plan; Apple’s current leadership profile lists Ternus as CEO and a board member.

Arthur Levinson Lead independent director

Who is John Ternus?

Ternus is a longtime Apple hardware engineer who rose through the company before becoming CEO. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and previously worked at Virtual Research Systems. Apple says he joined its product design team in 2001, became a vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team as senior vice president in 2021. He became CEO in 2026. Apple’s announcement and governance profile describe his career.

His hardware background

Apple credits Ternus with hardware engineering work across iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch. The company also points to work on reliability, durability, materials, and repairability. Those descriptions establish his product-engineering experience, not what strategic choices or results he will deliver as CEO.

What challenges does the new CEO face?

The Associated Press identified Apple’s competitiveness in artificial intelligence and supply-chain questions among the issues facing Ternus in its September 1, 2026 transition-day report. Those are reported challenges, not predictions about how he will handle them. His hardware career is documented; it does not by itself establish how Apple will approach AI, global operations, or other parts of its strategy.

What did Tim Cook accomplish as CEO?

Cook joined Apple in 1998 and led it as CEO from 2011 through 2026. Apple’s account of his tenure includes the introduction of Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro, as well as services such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV, and Apple Music. This separates two parts of the record: new products and services on one hand, and the company’s growth in scale on the other.

Apple’s reported growth during Cook’s tenure

Apple’s April 2026 announcement compared the company’s market capitalization of approximately $350 billion when Cook became CEO in 2011 with $4 trillion in 2026. Apple also reported revenue of $108 billion in fiscal year 2011 and more than $416 billion in fiscal year 2025. These are company-reported comparisons, not independent calculations in this article.

Apple said that during Cook’s tenure it expanded to more than 200 countries and territories and surpassed 2.5 billion active devices. It also said Services generated more than $100 billion during his tenure. Apple reported that its carbon footprint fell by more than 60 percent below 2015 levels while revenue nearly doubled. These figures and descriptions come from Apple’s succession announcement and Cook’s governance profile; they should be read as Apple’s account of its performance and impact.

How should readers understand the succession?

This is a change in CEO, not a departure by Cook from Apple. Ternus brings a documented engineering and product background to the top job; Cook remains executive chair with a stated policy-facing role. The transition establishes who leads the company and how the board roles changed, but it does not establish how Apple will perform under Ternus.
