IndiGo began operations in 2006, with its first flight scheduled for August 4 on the Delhi–Guwahati–Imphal route. By its 17th anniversary in 2023, the airline said it had passed 2,000 planned flights a day and carried 100 million passengers that calendar year. Those are dated company-reported milestones, not current operating figures.
When did IndiGo start operations?
IndiGo announced its launch on July 31, 2006, and scheduled its first flight for August 4, 2006. The company said the service would fly from Delhi to Guwahati, with the same Airbus A320 continuing to Imphal. Its announcement named InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal as promoters. In a November 17, 2023 announcement marking 17 years since operations began, IndiGo said it had crossed 2,000 planned daily flights. The figure included cargo operations and CAPF and Army charters, so it should not be read as a count of passenger flights alone. What passenger and network milestones did IndiGo report in 2023?
In a December 18, 2023 release, IndiGo said it carried 100 million passengers during calendar year 2023, compared with 78 million during 2022. It described the difference as a 22% increase in passenger traffic. The airline also reported operating to 118 destinations, including 32 international destinations, at the time of that announcement. The destination totals in IndiGo’s releases are snapshots from different dates and use different categories. An October 19, 2023 network announcement cited 84 domestic destinations and more than 49,000 domestic flights per month. In November, the airline described its network as more than 80 domestic and more than 30 international destinations; in December, it reported 118 total destinations, including 32 international ones. What else did IndiGo highlight about 2023?
In a January 12, 2024 year-in-review, IndiGo said it had touched 17 new destinations during 2023 and that November 25 was its busiest day on the network. It also reported a fastest turnaround time of 13 minutes. That is a single fastest instance cited by the airline, not an average or an indication of a typical aircraft turnaround.
