Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo find a refundable flight, compare the full cancellation and refund rules for the exact itinerary before you pay—not just a fare name or “refundable” badge. Check whether cancellation returns money to your original payment method or only a credit, what fees apply, the cancellation deadline, and who handles the request if you book through an agent. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules provide separate protections in certain situations; they do not make every ticket refundable, and they do not apply worldwide.
How to compare flight fare rules before booking
Use the same route, dates, passenger count, and booking channel for each fare you compare. Open the complete fare rules for the selected itinerary before checkout. The U.S. Department of Transportation advises travelers to understand a ticket’s type and restrictions; a short fare label alone may not explain the conditions that matter to you. See the DOT’s ticket-buying guidance.
- Find the full rules. On the airline or booking site, open the fare conditions or rules attached to the specific itinerary. If they are unclear or unavailable before payment, ask the seller to explain them before booking.
- Record voluntary cancellation terms. Check whether you can cancel before departure, the deadline, any fee, and whether the refund goes to your original payment method, becomes a travel credit, or is reduced by a charge.
- Check changes separately. Confirm whether changes are allowed, whether a change fee applies, and whether you must pay any difference if the replacement flight costs more. A no-change-fee rule does not necessarily mean a change is free.
- Check edge cases. Look for what happens if you cancel close to departure, miss a flight, or have already started a multi-flight itinerary. These terms vary; confirm them in the rules for your ticket rather than assuming one airline’s policy applies to another.
- Identify the seller. Note whether you are buying directly from the airline or through an online travel agency or other agent. Confirm who processes a voluntary cancellation and how to contact that seller.
- Keep disruption terms distinct. Check what the airline says about cancellations or significant schedule changes initiated by the airline; those situations are different from changing your mind about a flight that operates as scheduled.
Airline rules can differ by fare type and itinerary. For example, Delta directs travelers to the applicable fare rules and describes different cancellation-charge or eCredit treatment for certain tickets; American Airlines distinguishes non-refundable from unrestricted fares in its cancellation guidance and ticket FAQ. These are examples, not rules for all airlines or markets. Verify the live terms for the fare you are buying.
What “refundable” should mean in your comparison
Before treating a fare as refundable, establish what the seller promises to return and under what conditions. A refund to the original payment method is not the same as an airline credit, and either may be subject to conditions or charges. Compare the details side by side:

#1 Best Overall
| Term to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Voluntary cancellation | Can you cancel when your plans change, and must you do so before a stated deadline? |
| Refund form | Does cancellation return money to the original payment method, provide a credit, or return only an amount left after a fee? |
| Cancellation charge | Is there a fee, and does it vary with how close to departure you cancel? |
| Changes | Are changes permitted? Is there a fee, and must you pay a fare difference? |
| Partly used or missed itinerary | Do the fare rules explain how cancellation, a missed flight, or cancellation after travel begins is handled? |
| Disruption by the airline | What options apply if the airline cancels or significantly changes the flight? |
| Booking channel | Who sold the ticket and who must handle a voluntary cancellation request? |
When a comparable rule is not clear in the fare details, ask the airline or seller for an answer tied to your exact itinerary and keep the response with your booking records. Do not assume that “flexible,” “unrestricted,” or “refundable” has identical conditions across airlines.
A refundable fare is not the same as the U.S. 24-hour option
For an airline ticket bought at least seven days before its scheduled departure, the DOT requires the airline to offer one of two options: cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund without a penalty, or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price. The airline does not have to offer both, and the rule does not require free ticket changes during that period. Read the DOT’s refund guidance for the scope of this U.S. requirement.

This 24-hour requirement does not apply to bookings made through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. If you book through an agent, check its cancellation and hold terms before paying and contact that seller about the booking. The DOT’s rule is not a substitute for checking the fare’s voluntary cancellation terms after the 24-hour period.

In the United States, if an airline cancels a flight and you choose not to travel or accept a credit or other alternative, DOT guidance says you are entitled to a refund of the ticket price. The same principle applies to a significant delay or change when you decline the alternative travel. If you accept the significantly changed flight or other alternative travel, that DOT refund rule does not entitle you to a refund. See the DOT’s ticket-refund guidance, which shows an update date of July 8, 2026.

These disruption rights are separate from voluntary cancellation. If you decide not to travel and the flight operates as scheduled, the result depends on your ticket’s fare rules; DOT guidance says a traveler who bought a non-refundable ticket is not entitled to a refund merely for changing plans or arriving late. Do not use the word “non-refundable” to assume that every airline-initiated cancellation or qualifying disruption has the same outcome.

Before you pay: a short checklist
- Confirm the itinerary, passenger count, and booking channel match the options you are comparing.
- Save or note the complete fare rules, not only the displayed fare name.
- Write down the cancellation deadline, charge, and refund destination.
- Check change fees and whether a fare difference is payable.
- Confirm how the rules treat missed flights or travel already in progress.
- Know whether the airline or a third-party seller handles your request.
- For U.S. bookings, distinguish the airline’s 24-hour option and disruption-related refund rights from a fare’s ordinary voluntary cancellation terms.
