Search the exact itinerary you booked, then ask the airline or original booking site what your ticket allows. A lower price means a cheaper fare is currently listed; it does not automatically reprice your ticket or entitle you to a refund. Whether you can recover the difference depends on your ticket rules, booking channel and, in some cases, a limited cancellation window.
How to check the price of the same flight
- Identify your exact booking. From your confirmation or the airline’s app, note the carrier, flight numbers, origin and destination, travel dates, passenger count, cabin and fare conditions. Check whether you booked directly with the airline or through an online travel agency (OTA); the original seller may need to handle changes or refunds.
- Search and set an alert. In Google Flights, search the same trip, select the flight and turn on Track prices. Google says it may email you when the price of a tracked flight or route changes significantly. An alert is a reason to check your options, not a change to your existing ticket.
- Verify that the new fare is genuinely comparable. Match the flight numbers, dates, passenger count, cabin and fare conditions. Compare the total price, including applicable taxes and mandatory surcharges, and check baggage and other included services. A lower basic or stripped-down fare may not be the same product as the ticket you bought. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires displayed airfare to include applicable taxes and mandatory surcharges.
- Check your ticket’s rules with the seller. Open the booking’s “Manage booking,” “Change flight” or fare-rules page, or contact the airline or agent that sold the ticket. Ask whether you can change to the lower fare and whether any difference would be returned as cash, credit or points. Confirm fees, credit expiration rules and whether you would need to choose a different flight.
- Compare the net result before acting. Add up any change or cancellation fee and fare difference, and consider what form any credit would take and when it expires. Do not cancel until the seller confirms the terms and you have verified the lower fare is still available: prices can change quickly.
What Google Flights price tracking does—and does not do
Google’s regular Track prices feature monitors selected flights, routes or dates and can send an email when prices change significantly. It helps you notice a lower public fare, but its regular tracker instructions do not promise an adjustment to a ticket you already bought.
Google’s separate Price guarantee
Google also describes a Price guarantee for select itineraries marked with a guarantee badge. According to Google’s help page, eligibility is limited to qualifying one-way or round-trip itineraries departing the United States, with Google set to the U.S. region and USD currency. The itinerary must match on components including airline, flight number, dates, passengers, fare, cabin class and cancellation policy.
For an eligible guaranteed itinerary, Google says it monitors the price until the first flight departs. The difference must exceed $5; the maximum is $500 per Google Account per calendar year, and payment is through Google Pay after the traveler confirms the booking under the program’s terms. Changing or cancelling any part of the trip voids the difference. This is a limited offer to check when booking, not a general benefit of tracking a flight after purchase.

Does a lower fare mean you can get a refund?
There is no general U.S. DOT right to a refund simply because the same flight later becomes cheaper. A fare drop and a qualifying airline cancellation or significant schedule change are different situations. DOT says that when a covered cancellation or significant schedule change occurs, a traveler who rejects the alternative may be entitled to a refund; that rule does not make a voluntary fare drop refundable.
Instead, the ticket’s fare conditions and the seller’s rules determine whether you can change, cancel and rebook, or keep the ticket as is. As DOT explains on its Buying a Ticket page, “In some cases, instead of paying for a ticket change fee and a potential difference between the original ticket price and the current ticket price, it may be cheaper to request a refund for the ticket and rebook.” Compare the actual costs and terms before choosing.

When the U.S. 24-hour cancellation rule may help
For airline tickets bought at least seven days before scheduled departure, U.S. DOT requires airlines to offer either a 24-hour cancellation for a full refund without penalty or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare. Airlines do not have to offer both options, and the requirement does not mean you can make a free change. The airline rule does not apply to tickets booked through an OTA or travel agent; contact that seller about its terms. See DOT’s 24-hour reservation requirement.
If you are still within the applicable window, check that you qualify, confirm the lower fare is available, and compare the result of cancelling and buying again. Do not assume the same option is available outside the U.S. or through a third-party seller.

Why the answer varies by airline and ticket
Southwest
Southwest’s Lower Fare Refund Options page describes changing a reservation or cancelling and rebooking. For nonrefundable fares, it says a price difference is returned as flight credit or Transferable Flight Credit, depending on the fare purchased. A lower price on reward travel returns the difference in Rapid Rewards points to the original account. Southwest also states that flight credit associated with Basic fares expires after six months. Check the live terms and your specific ticket before relying on these outcomes.
Delta
Delta’s change and cancellation information makes fees and fare differences dependent on ticket and itinerary conditions. Its Low Fare Commitment describes a risk-free cancellation period limited to the first 24 hours; it is not a general price-adjustment policy.

Questions to ask before changing or cancelling
- Does this new listing match my booked flight, fare, cabin, passenger count and included services?
- Can this specific ticket be changed to the lower fare, or must I cancel and book again?
- What will I pay in fees and fare difference, and would any returned value be cash, airline credit or points?
- When does any credit expire, and are there restrictions on how it can be used?
- Does my booking channel require me to make the change through the agent rather than the airline?
- Is the lower fare still available for every passenger on my reservation?
