The ticket should show the right track, race, selections, bet type and amount. Keep it intact until the result is official.
How to place a horse-race bet
At a teller window, New York Racing Association (NYRA) says to give the teller the track, race number, stake, wager type and horse number. For example: “Belmont, 4th race, $10 to Win on 5.” NYRA also offers self-service wagering at its tracks; procedures and account options vary by venue. Its FAQ advises checking the ticket before leaving the window or terminal.
- Choose the track and race. Confirm the race number and that wagering is still open.
- Choose a wager. Check the venue’s current race program or race page for the menu and minimum stake.
- Specify your selection. For a simple bet, give the horse number. For a multi-horse wager, identify every selection and whether the finishing order must be exact.
- State the stake. Include the amount and, where relevant, the denomination or number of combinations.
- Review the ticket. Check the track, race, wager, selections and amount before leaving the window or submitting.
- Keep the ticket safe. Hold it until the result is official, and keep it readable and unaltered.
What common horse-racing wagers mean
The definitions below follow the Illinois Racing Board’s standard descriptions. A track’s menu and specific settlement rules can differ, so check its current program or official race information.

These wagers differ in how many horses or races you must cover and whether the order matters. They do not, by themselves, establish that one bet offers better value or a greater chance of profit.

How odds and payouts work
In pari-mutuel wagering, money bet into a pool determines the odds and payouts; displayed odds can change as wagers arrive. NYRA distinguishes its morning line—an estimate by a track handicapper—from live pool odds. At NYRA tracks, wagering closes when the starting gate opens, but the FAQ says final odds may not appear until the race is underway because late wagers from simulcast sites take time to reach the totalisator calculation. An early odds display is therefore not a locked payout.
The sources cited here do not establish a universal payout formula or a complete comparison of takeout rates. Check the venue’s rules and displayed information for the wager you intend to make.

Minimum bets depend on the venue and wager
Minimums are local examples, not universal prices. NYRA’s FAQ lists minimums of $1 for win, place, show and exacta, 50 cents for trifecta and 10 cents for superfecta. The Illinois Racing Board states a general $2 minimum there unless otherwise indicated, and says the official program lists the minimum for each wager. Verify the current minimum and available menu for your track before submitting a ticket.
Scratches, official results and keeping your ticket
A late scratch or a change to the posted order can affect a ticket. NYRA says that, at its venues, late scratches after wagering closes prompt refunds for listed win, place, show, exacta, quinella, trifecta and superfecta wagers. Multi-race bets can receive different treatment—including refunds, consolation payouts or use of the post-time favorite—depending on the wager and the affected leg. These are NYRA-specific rules; check the venue where you bet.

Keep the ticket until the race result is official: NYRA notes that a disqualification can change the order of finish. The Illinois Racing Board says lost tickets will not be considered and mutilated or altered tickets will not be accepted for payment there. Preserve your ticket so its details remain readable.
Check local law and age rules before betting
There is no single legal answer for every U.S. reader. State law and authorized operators determine where and how wagering is permitted, who may bet, and which wagers are offered. Texas law, for example, limits wagering to authorized circumstances; Illinois prohibits anyone under 18 from purchasing or cashing pari-mutuel tickets. These examples are not a complete national map. Check your state racing regulator and the venue or authorized account provider before wagering, especially before using an online service.

Set a limit and seek help if gambling is a problem
Decide in advance what amount you can afford to lose, and do not treat odds, a wager type or a selection as a guaranteed return. NYRA’s FAQ lists a New York-specific, 24-hour help line at 1-877-8-HOPE-NY. Readers elsewhere should use a support service available in their own jurisdiction.
