On the XRP Ledger Mainnet, the documented reserve is currently 1 XRP for the base reserve, plus 0.2 XRP for each counted owned ledger object. A new, ordinary account with no owned objects therefore has a 1 XRP reserve requirement. Your actual amount depends on the ledger’s live settings, your account’s object count and whether any reserve is sponsored.
Reserve XRP is not a transaction fee automatically spent. It remains part of your account balance, but transaction costs are destroyed and can reduce your balance below the reserve. Check the current Mainnet settings before funding an account or transacting.
How the XRP reserve requirement is calculated
For an ordinary, unsponsored Mainnet account, the calculation is:
Reserve requirement = base reserve + (owner reserve × OwnerCount)

The XRP Ledger’s official documentation lists a 1 XRP base reserve and a 0.2 XRP owner reserve per counted object. OwnerCount is the number of ledger objects attributed to the account for reserve purposes; it is not simply the number of transactions the account has made.

These are arithmetic examples using the values shown in the XRP Ledger reserves documentation, accessed in 2026. They are not a guarantee of the current setting or a funding recommendation. Sponsorship and object-specific rules can affect the amount an account must provide.

What counts toward OwnerCount?
Ledger objects associated with an account can increase its owner reserve. Examples include trust lines, offers, NFT pages, escrows, checks and signer lists. The effect depends on the object and, for some entries, on how the ledger attributes reserve responsibility.
- Trust lines: The reserves documentation describes a specific exception for an account funded with exactly the 1 XRP base reserve: it can create its first two trust lines without an owner reserve charge. If the account is funded with more than 1 XRP, the normal reserve rules apply to those first two lines. This is not a general rule that the first two trust lines are always free.
- Trust-line responsibility: A RippleState entry can count toward one or both connected accounts. The official RippleState reference says the token holder most often bears the reserve, while the issuer does not.
- NFTs and offers: NFT reserve is tied to NFT page objects, not charged once for every individual NFT. Sell offers can add their own owner reserve, and how NFTs fit on pages can vary.
The official NFT documentation gives examples: a new account with one NFT page and one NFT sell offer requires a 1.4 XRP reserve under the example’s assumptions. Minting 200 NFTs and creating a sell offer for each could require as much as 43.6 XRP in reserve under that same example. Transaction fees are separate from those reserve figures.

Reserve XRP is not a fee, but fees can reduce your balance
The reserve is XRP that must remain available to satisfy the account’s reserve requirement; it is not a separate charge collected whenever you transact. However, transaction costs are destroyed, and the ledger can allow those costs to take an account below its reserve requirement.
An account below its current reserve requirement remains on-ledger, but it cannot send XRP to others or create new objects that would increase its reserve requirement. This distinction matters when deciding how much XRP to keep available: meeting the reserve is not the same as holding enough for future transaction costs.

How sponsorship changes who must provide the reserve
XRPL sponsorship can shift responsibility for an account’s base reserve or an owned object’s reserve to a sponsor. The sponsored XRP is not deposited into the sponsored user’s wallet; the ledger tracks which account is responsible for the reserve. The official Sponsored Fees and Reserves documentation explains the arrangement. If sponsorship applies, the simple base-plus-OwnerCount calculation does not by itself tell you how much XRP your account must provide.
How to check the current reserve and your account’s number
Reserve settings can change through validator fee voting, and values for Mainnet should not be assumed to apply to test networks or other deployments. To calculate an account-specific figure, use a current server connected to the relevant validated ledger and check both the live reserve parameters and the account’s OwnerCount.

OwnerCount. The reserves documentation and AccountRoot reference explain the account data. - For a normal unsponsored account, calculate the base reserve plus the owner increment multiplied by OwnerCount.
- Adjust for any sponsorship, special account or object rules, and keep transaction costs separate from the reserve.
Confirm that the server is connected and current before treating its validated-ledger values as the network’s live settings. XRPL documentation also describes reserve values in drops in the FeeSettings ledger entry and in ledger-stream updates; those representations are useful for applications, while server_info provides the XRP-denominated fields above.

Why older pages may show a higher XRP reserve
Older articles may list a 10 XRP base reserve and a 2 XRP owner reserve. The XRP Ledger Foundation’s announcement of lower reserves, published 2024-12-12, says the validator-approved change took effect on 2024-12-02: the base reserve fell from 10 XRP to 1 XRP, and the owner reserve from 2 XRP to 0.2 XRP. The figures can change again, so the current validated ledger—not an old article—should guide a new calculation.
Reserve requirements are ledger rules, not wallet-brand rules. A hardware wallet can affect how you manage private keys, but it does not change the account’s reserve calculation or satisfy the reserve on its own.
