How to Buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana: A Beginner’s Guide to Exchanges and Wallets

You can buy Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) through a crypto exchange or, in some cases, a wallet that connects to an exchange or payment provider. The basic steps are to check that the service supports the asset where you live, verify your account and payment method if required, review the purchase preview, and confirm. Before buying, decide whether to leave the assets with a custodian or manage the private keys yourself; each choice shifts responsibility and risk.

What to check before you buy

Crypto services do not offer the same assets, payment options or networks everywhere. Availability can also differ between an exchange account and a wallet’s purchase feature. Check the service’s live listing for the exact asset—BTC, ETH or SOL—and the country or region associated with your account. Do not assume that a service supporting an asset in one mode supports it in every wallet mode.

  • Asset and network: Confirm the exact coin and the chain or network you intend to use. Bitcoin addresses and Ethereum addresses are not interchangeable. The receiving wallet must support the selected asset on the selected network.
  • Payment and verification: Check which payment methods are available and what identity or payment verification is required. Minimum purchase amounts can vary by asset or payment method.
  • Total cost: Read the order preview, including any provider fee, spread, payment charge and, if relevant, withdrawal or network fee. Network fees apply to on-chain transactions; estimates and provider charges may change.
  • Custody and recovery: Find out who controls the keys, how account or wallet access can be recovered, and what happens to customer assets if a provider fails.

For self-custody, Coinbase Wallet’s support page illustrates why mode matters: it describes wallet support that can include EVM-compatible networks, Bitcoin and Solana, while its smart wallet is EVM-only. Those details are provider-specific and can change; check the current support information for your chosen wallet and confirm it in the app before sending funds. The exact screens and requirements vary by provider and location. Coinbase’s help page documents one example of the general flow; it is not a recommendation, and its availability, payment methods, minimums and fees are provider-specific. Coinbase’s purchase instructions describe buying cryptocurrency as follows:

  2. Complete verification. Follow the service’s identity and payment-method checks. Requirements depend on the provider and your location.
  3. Select the asset and amount. Choose BTC, ETH or SOL only if it is supported for your account and intended use. Check the minimum shown by the service.
  4. Review the order preview. Confirm the asset, amount, payment method, exchange rate and every displayed charge. A purchase price alone may not represent the total cost.
  5. Confirm only if the details are right. Save or review the transaction record, and check where the service will hold the purchased asset.

Buying through a wallet or payment provider

Some wallet apps let you buy through a linked exchange account or a third-party on-ramp rather than selling crypto directly themselves. The checkout provider, available regions, payment methods and fees may differ from the wallet’s own features.

Coinbase Wallet documents an example in which a user selects an asset and network, enters an amount, chooses a payment method, then reviews and confirms the purchase. It notes that outgoing blockchain transactions incur network fees and that third-party fee estimates can change. Treat the live checkout preview as authoritative for that transaction, not a static fee example. Coinbase Wallet’s instructions for adding crypto.

Exchange custody or self-custody?

A crypto wallet does not hold coins in the same way a physical wallet holds cash. It stores or helps manage the private keys or passcodes that control access to crypto assets. The SEC explains this distinction in its overview of crypto assets.

Choice Who controls the keys? Main trade-off
Exchange or other custodian The provider manages the private keys. Account access and buying can be simpler, but you depend on the provider’s security, solvency, policies and recovery process. A provider failure, compromise or insolvency can put access at risk.
Self-custody wallet You manage the keys and recovery phrase. You control access directly, but are responsible for protecting and recovering the keys. Loss, theft, damage or compromise can permanently remove access.

Before choosing a custodian, the SEC advises investors to investigate its background and regulation, supported assets, security and storage practices, use of deposited assets, privacy, fees, and what happens if it fails. Ask what protections actually apply; do not assume crypto holdings have bank-deposit insurance.

The SEC’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors, dated December 12, 2025, says: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” The bulletin reflects SEC staff views and does not have legal force or effect.

Hot wallets, cold wallets and hardware devices

A hot wallet connects to the internet through web, desktop or mobile software. That connection can make transactions convenient, but also creates more exposure to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically kept offline, often using a physical device; it is generally less exposed online, but is less convenient and can still be lost, damaged or stolen. Cold storage reduces some risks; it does not make assets invulnerable.

A hardware wallet is an optional type of physical cold-storage device, not a requirement for every buyer. If considering one, verify that the exact device and firmware support BTC, ETH and SOL on the networks you plan to use. Compare its recovery process, security documentation, ease of use and cost. No device can compensate for a disclosed or lost recovery phrase.

Compare services by total cost, compatibility and control

Rather than relying on a universal “best exchange” or “best wallet” label, compare services against your actual location, payment method and intended use. Fees, available assets and supported networks vary, and a fee shown for one provider or transaction is not a market-wide rate.

  • Are BTC, ETH and SOL available to your account in your location?
  • Which payment methods and verification steps apply?
  • What is the full purchase cost in the live preview, including provider fees or spread?
  • What withdrawal and on-chain network charges may apply?
  • Does the receiving wallet support the precise asset and network?
  • Who controls the keys, and what are the account recovery and customer-asset terms?
  • What security, privacy and failure policies apply? For a custodian, ask about transaction, transfer, setup, closure and any asset-based fees.

Understand the risks—and an alternative to holding coins directly

Crypto prices can be highly volatile, and an investment can lose value. Crypto held in a wallet or on an exchange does not receive the same protections as insured bank deposits or securities accounts. A service can also shut down or suffer a security failure. Use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication, keep software and devices secure, and verify web addresses and transaction details before acting. The SEC’s alert on Bitcoin and other virtual currency-related investments discusses these risks.

If your goal is price exposure rather than direct ownership, a spot Bitcoin or Ether exchange-traded product (ETP) is a distinct option to research. SEC investor guidance says ETPs can provide exposure without some risks of transacting on crypto platforms or handling wallet keys, but they retain the volatility of the underlying asset and have product-specific structures and risks. An ETP is not a way to withdraw the underlying crypto to a personal wallet, and the cited guidance addresses Bitcoin and Ether—not Solana. See the SEC’s September 9, 2024 bulletin on Bitcoin and Ether ETPs.
