Blue Owl Capital vs. Blackstone: Which Alternative Asset Manager Fits Your Portfolio?

Blue Owl and Blackstone differ in reported scale and strategy breadth, but AUM alone cannot tell you which investment fits. Compare the exact shares or fund, its costs, liquidity, risks and performance.

Neither manager is automatically the better fit: Blackstone reports a much larger business and a broader range of strategies, while Blue Owl is organized around three principal platforms. Those differences describe the firms—not the returns or risks of their shares or funds. To choose between them, first decide whether you are considering company stock or a particular investment vehicle, then compare that investment’s strategy, fees, liquidity, risk and matched-period performance.

How Blue Owl and Blackstone differ

Both firms manage alternative investments, but their reported scale and platform breadth differ substantially. The figures below are company-reported as of June 30, 2026; AUM measures can use different definitions, so they should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable.

Firm Reported AUM Reported platform focus
Blue Owl Capital $319 billion total AUM, including $190.6 billion in fee-paying AUM and $31.1 billion not yet paying fees, as reported by Blue Owl for June 30, 2026. Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital, according to Blue Owl’s company materials.
Blackstone $1.3 trillion AUM, as reported by Blackstone for June 30, 2026. Real estate, private equity, credit, infrastructure, life sciences, growth equity, secondaries, and hedge funds, according to Blackstone’s company materials.

On those reported figures, Blackstone’s AUM was roughly four times Blue Owl’s. That is a measure of managed assets, not a forecast of shareholder returns, fund performance, investment quality or risk. Blue Owl’s total AUM also is not the same as fee-paying AUM: its company filing reports those as separate measures.

Additional figures are specific to platforms

Blackstone reported $547 billion in combined Credit & Insurance platform AUM at June 30, 2026. Its multi-asset investing page reported $109 billion of investor capital under management on that date. These are platform-specific figures, not additional totals to add to Blackstone’s $1.3 trillion AUM.

First decide what you would be investing in

“Blue Owl versus Blackstone” can mean a comparison of public company shares or a comparison of funds managed by either firm. Those are different decisions with different sources of return, costs, liquidity and risks.

Company shares

Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) and Blackstone common shares are equity investments in the managers themselves. Their value and returns are affected by the companies’ businesses and share valuations, as well as broader market conditions. A manager’s AUM or the performance of one managed fund does not by itself establish whether its common shares are attractively valued.

Blue Owl declared a quarterly dividend of $0.23 per Class A share on July 30, 2026, in its release of Q2 2026 results. The payment was scheduled for August 27, 2026, to holders of record on August 13, 2026. That is a specific declaration, not a guaranteed future payment or a basis for comparing investment yields; a yield comparison would also require synchronized share prices and current dividend information.

Funds and other managed vehicles

A fund or partnership managed by either firm gives exposure to its own mandate and terms, not simply to the manager’s overall business. Blackstone lists registered products including BXMIX, BMACX and BSL. Its private-wealth materials caution that they are not an offer to sell and that investing involves the risk of loss of capital. Blue Owl’s Blue Owl Capital Corporation (NYSE: OBDC) is one specific example: a Blue Owl-managed business development company that provides direct lending to U.S. middle-market businesses. Its Q2 2026 investor page described 229 portfolio companies and predominantly senior-secured investments. OBDC is one vehicle, not a stand-in for every Blue Owl strategy.

Before comparing products, identify the legal vehicle and read its current prospectus, offering documents or other governing documents. A public share, registered fund, BDC, non-traded REIT, interval fund and private partnership may have materially different investment rules and investor rights.

Compare the actual investment, not just the manager

Underlying strategy and portfolio

Blackstone reports a wider range of strategies than Blue Owl’s three principal platforms. That may matter if you want a specific exposure, but a broad menu is not itself diversification in your portfolio. Check what a particular vehicle owns, how concentrated it is, how it uses leverage and which risks drive its results. For two funds, compare their mandates and holdings; for company shares, compare the businesses and exposures that affect each manager.

Fees and leverage

Review the expense and fee terms for the precise investment. Blue Owl’s corporate filing says management fees are generally based on fee-paying AUM, but that statement does not establish the complete fee burden borne by an investor in a Blue Owl-managed product. Compare the relevant prospectus or offering documents for management and incentive fees, fund expenses, borrowing costs and any other applicable charges. Do not assume that a manager’s fee structure applies uniformly across all its products.

Liquidity and eligibility

Public shares trade on an exchange; managed vehicles can instead have subscription windows, redemption limits, lockups, transfer restrictions or investor-eligibility requirements. The terms vary by product, and the company-level AUM figures do not answer them. Verify the exact vehicle’s governing documents, including how and when an investor may exit and whether redemptions can be limited or delayed.

Valuation and performance

For company shares, compare market prices and valuation measures at the same date, alongside total returns over the same periods. For funds, compare net returns over matched periods and check that strategies, risks and liquidity are genuinely comparable. The reported AUM figures do not identify a valuation or performance winner, and a comparison of one vehicle’s results with another manager’s company stock would not be apples to apples.

Your objective and ability to bear losses

Income, growth, diversification and capital preservation are different goals, and they can point to different investments. Blackstone describes returns and capital preservation as objectives for clients; objectives are not guaranteed results. Decide what role an investment would play, how much loss you could tolerate and whether its liquidity fits your needs before selecting a product.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Name the investment: write down the exact share class, ticker, fund or partnership—not just “Blue Owl” or “Blackstone.”
  2. Match the exposure to your goal: review the vehicle’s strategy, assets, concentration and leverage, and compare them with the role you want it to play.
  3. Read the current terms: use the latest filings, prospectus or offering documents to check fees, eligibility, liquidity, redemption rules and risks.
  4. Compare like with like: use synchronized dates for share valuation and total returns, or matched periods and net returns for comparable funds.
  5. Check portfolio fit: consider overlap with investments you already own, the risk you are adding and how readily you may need access to the money.

As of the company-reported June 30, 2026 figures, Blackstone is larger and lists more strategy categories; Blue Owl reports three principal platforms and separately reports total and fee-paying AUM. The available figures do not establish which firm’s shares or particular fund would deliver the better outcome. That depends on the specific investment’s terms, valuation, risk and fit with your portfolio.
