His account links neural-network research, custom chips and the Transformer paper to a future in which AI could help with tasks from writing to disaster readiness. It is a corporate outlook, not an independent assessment of Google’s progress or proof that every proposed benefit has been achieved.
What Pichai’s anniversary essay says
Published ahead of Google’s 25th-birthday celebration later in September 2023, Pichai’s essay looks back at technical milestones and argues that AI can extend Google’s mission. He wrote: “With AI, we have the opportunity to do things that matter on an even larger scale.”
The essay’s framing matters: it combines a retrospective about Google’s role in machine learning with predictions and questions about what AI might make possible. Its examples and product names describe the period when it was published, not necessarily Google’s current products or capabilities.
How Pichai connects Google’s AI history
Neural networks and the AI-first direction
Pichai recalls the excitement around deep neural networks in the early 2010s. He says research at DeepMind helped shape his thinking when he became Google’s CEO in 2015 and concluded that Google should become an AI-first company. This is his account of the company’s strategic direction, rather than an independent history of the decision.

TPUs and the Transformer paper
He identifies Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Google’s specialized machine-learning chips, as one part of the technical foundation. Pichai said that at the time, TPUs delivered a 30X to 80X machine-learning performance improvement over other hardware. That range is the CEO’s comparison in the 2023 essay; it is not a current benchmark or a universal comparison across workloads.
Pichai also points to the 2017 Transformer paper as an important milestone in the development of machine learning and generative AI. Together, the chips and the paper illustrate the essay’s argument that research and infrastructure developed over time helped create conditions for newer AI applications.

Products and figures cited in the 2023 essay
Pichai connected AI to products and examples available or being developed at the time, including Search, Bard, Gmail, Lens and Google Workspace. The essay’s use cases included help with writing, image-based queries, translation and speech synthesis. These references should be read in their 2023 context, rather than as a guide to current product names or availability.

AI’s possible public benefits—and the distinction between aims and results
Beyond consumer-facing products, Pichai raised possible applications in education, clean energy, transport, agriculture and disaster readiness. He asked, for example, how every student might gain access to a personal tutor “in any language, and on any topic,” and how communities might better predict and prepare for natural disasters.
Those are illustrative questions about potential, not evidence that such outcomes have been delivered across those fields. The essay’s flood-forecasting and AlphaFold figures are specific examples Pichai reported; they do not by themselves establish the scale or effectiveness of AI’s impact across the broader areas he names.

Pichai pairs expanding AI’s usefulness with a responsibility commitment: “Making AI more helpful for everyone, and deploying it responsibly, is the most important way we’ll deliver on our mission for the next 10 years and beyond.” That sentence states the company’s goal. The anniversary essay does not, on its own, assess how well Google has met it.

How to read the essay
- Historical milestones: neural-network research, TPUs and the 2017 Transformer paper are presented as contributors to Google’s AI direction.
- Company-reported measures: performance, adoption, forecast coverage and AlphaFold figures are claims attributed to Pichai in 2023, not current independent measurements.
- Future aspirations: the education, energy, transport, agriculture and disaster-readiness ideas describe possible benefits, not demonstrated results in every area.
