Blue Owl Capital Inc. is an alternative asset manager, not a REIT or a BDC. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange as OWL. REIT and BDC describe certain separate investment vehicles in Blue Owl’s broader business, not the listed parent company.
What is Blue Owl Capital Inc.?
Blue Owl Capital Inc. is the publicly traded parent and asset manager. The firm says its business is organized around three platforms: Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital. Its shareholder overview reported $319 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2026, across those platforms. AUM is a measure of assets managed for investment strategies; it is not the same as assets owned on the company’s own balance sheet. Blue Owl shareholder overview.
Blue Owl says it began trading on the NYSE in 2021. Its company history traces the platforms’ origins to Owl Rock (Credit), Oak Street (Real Assets), and Dyal Capital (GP Strategic Capital). The firm’s overview also reported approximately 1,380 professionals globally as of October 4, 2026; that is a company-reported, time-sensitive headcount. Blue Owl company history.
Is Blue Owl Capital a BDC?
No. Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) is the manager; a business development company (BDC) is a separate investment-company vehicle used by some businesses it manages. BDCs in Blue Owl’s lineup focus on lending, but their legal and trading identities are distinct from the parent’s.

Other Blue Owl BDCs
Blue Owl’s materials identify Blue Owl Capital Corporation III (NYSE: OBDE) as publicly traded, while distinguishing it from non-traded BDCs. The cited public-status information comes from the firm’s 3Q24 materials, so it should not be treated as confirmation of OBDE’s current listing status without checking current company information. A BDC label alone does not tell you whether a particular vehicle is exchange-listed or how investors can access it. Blue Owl 3Q24 BDC materials.

Does Blue Owl Capital own or manage REITs?
Blue Owl’s product lineup includes real-estate investment vehicles, but that does not make OWL a REIT. A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a vehicle that invests in real estate; Blue Owl’s investor portal lists Blue Owl Real Estate Net Lease Trust among its REIT and BDC offerings. The portal establishes the trust’s association with Blue Owl, but does not establish an exchange listing or ticker for it. Blue Owl investor portal.

|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Owl Capital Inc. | Listed parent and asset manager | Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital platforms | NYSE: OWL |
| Blue Owl Capital Corporation | Separate specialty-finance company and BDC, externally managed by a Blue Owl-affiliated adviser | Lending to U.S. middle-market companies | NYSE: OBDC |

These are different kinds of entities, not interchangeable tickers. OWL represents the listed manager, while OBDC represents a BDC. A Blue Owl-sponsored fund or trust may have its own listing status and access terms; not every product is publicly traded or available to every retail investor.

- Check the ticker and legal entity. OWL, OBDC, and OBDE refer to different companies or vehicles; do not use “Blue Owl” as if it were a single security.
- Separate manager from investment vehicle. Buying OWL shares means investing in the asset manager, not directly buying shares in every BDC or REIT it manages or sponsors.
- Confirm access and listing details for the specific product. Blue Owl’s materials distinguish publicly traded and non-traded BDCs, and the investor portal lists a REIT trust without establishing its ticker or exchange status.
