Buying bitcoin safely means checking two separate things: how you buy it and who controls the keys afterward. An exchange or app may handle the purchase and hold the bitcoin for you; moving it to a wallet you control gives you more direct control, but also makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery backup. Neither choice removes bitcoin’s price risk, and a transfer to the wrong address may be impossible to reverse.
Choose a purchase platform by its terms, not a safety label
No exchange or purchase app is universally safest or cheapest. Before providing money or personal information, check the service’s current official terms and confirm it supports your country or state. The regulatory guidance cited here is U.S.-specific; requirements and protections may differ elsewhere.
Compare the following details on the provider’s official website. Charges, withdrawal rules, and availability can change, so use current terms rather than an old comparison or an advertised headline fee.
- Total cost: Check the trading or purchase charge, any spread between the quoted buy and sell prices, funding costs, and fees for withdrawing or transferring bitcoin. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin also advises asking custodians about transaction, transfer, annual, setup, and account-closing fees.
- Account access and security: Review available multifactor authentication, account recovery procedures, and how the provider handles suspected account compromise. Bitcoin.org recommends strong multifactor authentication for custodial services.
- Custody and withdrawals: Find out whether the provider controls the private keys, whether you can withdraw bitcoin to a wallet you control, and what limits, holds, or other conditions apply. Read how the service says it handles customer assets.
- Support and identity checks: Confirm the service’s official support channels and the identity checks or restrictions that apply to your location. Navigate to the official site yourself rather than relying on an unsolicited message or search advertisement.
The CFTC advises researching a platform and wallet before providing payment or personal information. Its advice concerns U.S. virtual-currency markets; it is not a guarantee that a platform is safe or that every market is regulated or supervised by a government agency.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Understand who controls the bitcoin after you buy
A wallet does not store bitcoin like a physical wallet stores cash. It manages private keys, which authorize transactions. The key question is whether a service controls those keys or you do.
| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | Main responsibility or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | The provider controls the keys. | You rely on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and ability to honor withdrawals. Access can be simpler, but you do not directly control the keys. |
| Self-custody wallet | You control the keys. | You are responsible for protecting the device and recovery backup. If you permanently lose access and have no usable backup, a provider generally cannot restore the funds. |
Custody and storage method are related but not identical. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 investor bulletin explains that both self-custody and third-party custody can use hot or cold storage. “Cold” means keys are kept offline; it does not by itself mean you control them or eliminate every risk.

Choose a wallet that fits how you will use it
| Wallet type | Practical fit | Important risk or duty |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | Convenient access through an exchange or service. | You depend on the provider’s safeguards and withdrawal operations. |
| Mobile wallet | Portable access and everyday transactions. | Device loss or compromise and unsafe backups can put access at risk. |
| Desktop wallet | User control and, with some wallets, more advanced setups. | A computer exposed to malware can put keys or transactions at risk. |
| Hardware wallet | A physical device designed to keep keys offline; Bitcoin.org describes this category as an option for larger amounts. | The device is not a substitute for a secure recovery backup. Losing it without a usable backup can make funds inaccessible. |
Cold storage can reduce exposure to online threats, but it shifts more responsibility to you for the device, recovery process, and backup security. A hardware wallet is a category, not a guarantee or product endorsement.
Set up self-custody and protect the recovery phrase
A recovery phrase is a sensitive credential that can restore access to a wallet. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance says: “Store your seed phrase in a secure place and do not share it with anyone.” Treat anyone who asks you to disclose it as a warning sign, even if they claim to be support staff.

- Choose and obtain the wallet carefully. For a hardware wallet, buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Bitcoin.org advises checking package integrity and creating the recovery phrase yourself during initial setup. Do not use a wallet that appears to have been initialized already.
- Create the backup during setup. Follow the wallet’s own instructions and make sure you understand how it handles backup and address generation before transferring funds.
- Keep the phrase private and secure. Do not type it into a website, send it to a supposed support representative, or store it in an unencrypted online note. Bitcoin.org advises keeping backups securely and considering more than one secure location where appropriate.
- Plan for recovery, not just theft prevention. A backup must remain accessible to you when needed while staying protected from other people. A lost device can be replaced only if you can recover the wallet; a lost phrase with no other recovery method can mean permanent loss.
Buy and transfer in deliberate steps
- Check the provider’s current terms. Confirm availability in your location, identity requirements, total charges, custody arrangement, withdrawal eligibility, limits, and expected holds.
- Secure the account. Turn on the strongest practical multifactor authentication available and learn the official account-recovery route before relying on the account.
- Make a purchase only after understanding the quoted cost. Review the amount of bitcoin you will receive and applicable charges. A small initial purchase may help you learn the interface, but it does not reduce bitcoin’s market risk.
- Decide whether to leave the bitcoin with the provider or withdraw it. If withdrawing, check the provider’s current withdrawal instructions and any network, address, fee, or hold requirements. Understand the confirmation status before assuming the transfer is complete.
- Verify before authorizing a transfer. Check the entire receiving address and the amount on the screen or device used to approve the transaction. Do not rely only on the first or last characters of an address. A wrong address or payment to a scammer may not be recoverable.
Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent, and are effectively irreversible. Bitcoin.org advises checking details before sending. Bitcoin is not anonymous: a purchase may associate identity information with wallet or transaction data.
Recognize scams before sending money or revealing access
Scammers may impersonate an exchange, wallet maker, or support representative, or pressure someone with a promise of guaranteed returns. The CFTC warns: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” Be especially wary of:

Find support through the provider’s official website and verify the contact independently. Bitcoin.org says legitimate support should not ask for a seed phrase or private key and that no legitimate firm offers guaranteed crypto recovery. The FTC cautions that lost or misdirected funds and compromised accounts may not be recoverable.

In the United States, FDIC deposit insurance applies to eligible deposits held at FDIC-insured banks; it does not insure crypto assets. The FDIC’s July 28, 2022 fact sheet warns that claims made by crypto companies can lead customers to believe their crypto holdings themselves are insured. FTC consumer guidance likewise says cryptocurrency held in accounts is not insured by a government like U.S. dollars in an FDIC-insured bank account.

This distinction does not mean ordinary bank deposits are never insured, and it does not establish whether a particular crypto company has private insurance or what that policy covers. Check a provider’s own custody disclosures rather than treating an insurance claim as government protection for your bitcoin.
Account for price risk separately from security
Bitcoin’s value can change rapidly and materially, and you can lose money even if your account and wallet remain secure. The CFTC advises extensive due diligence and notes that virtual-currency cash markets may not be regulated or supervised by a government agency. The FTC also warns about volatility and the possibility of substantial loss. Security steps can reduce certain operational risks; they cannot prevent investment losses.
