A game-worn jersey was worn by a player during a game; a game-issued jersey was issued or prepared for possible use, but that label alone does not establish that it was worn. For a buyer, the key is the exact status supported by the item’s record—not its appearance, a certificate, or a hologram by itself.
What the labels mean
Game-worn or game-used
“Game-worn” means the evidence supports that a player wore the jersey in a game. “Game-used” is often used for items used during a game; a 2011 U.S. Department of Justice document uses both terms for jerseys worn during a game, but that historical wording is not a universal rule for every league today: Department of Justice terminology.
Game-issued, team-issued, or locker-room-issued
These terms generally describe a jersey issued, prepared, or made available for possible use. Issuance is not proof of actual game use, and sellers may not all use “game-issued” with the same verification behind it.
MLB defines its specific “Team Issued” designation as an independent third-party authenticator attesting that an item was issued by the club to its clubhouse. MLB says the designation is not intended to determine whether the item was used. The St. Louis Blues likewise explain that locker-room-issued jerseys may not have been used before the set is retired. Check the issuing organization’s definition rather than assuming the terms are interchangeable.

Licensed retail jerseys
A licensed fan jersey can be genuine merchandise without having been issued to a player or used in a game. MLB distinguishes its authentication holograms from holograms on licensed products: a licensed-product hologram does not authenticate a game-used item. See the MLB Authentication FAQ.
What authentication can—and cannot—tell you
Authentication has a defined scope. MLB says an item may be eligible for its program only when an authenticator witnesses it being signed or used. A matching hologram and database entry can provide item details, but a record marked “Team Issued” establishes issuance, not game use. “Authenticated” therefore does not automatically mean “game-worn.”

Programs vary by league and club. The Blues say covered categories come with a Certificate of Authenticity and that game-used items collected during the 2026–27 season will receive a serial-numbered hologram. That specific future-season detail is not a general standard for other teams or sports. Read the current policy and record from the organization that issued the documentation.
How to check a jersey before buying
- Pin down the seller’s claim. Note the sport, league, team, seller, and exact label: game-worn, game-used, game-issued, team-issued, or licensed retail.
- Find the authentication mark and issuer. Use the relevant league or team’s official verification process. For an MLB hologram, enter its identifier in the official MLB authentication database.
- Read the result literally. Confirm that the database record matches the item and the seller’s wording. An MLB “Team Issued” result does not establish game use, and a licensed-product hologram is not game-use authentication.
- Ask for item-specific documentation. Look for information connecting this jersey to the named player, season, game, or event. A general certificate may document a category or program without establishing those particulars.
- Evaluate provenance and condition separately. Consider who handled the jersey and whether its chain of custody is documented. Visible wear alone does not prove game use; wear, repairs, or stains need an item-specific record to establish their significance.
How to compare listings as a buyer
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Status | Does the record support actual game use, or only issuance or retail authenticity? |
| Specificity | Does it identify a player, season, game, or event, or only a broad item category? |
| Provenance | Is there a documented chain of custody for this particular jersey? |
| Authentication scope | Who issued the record, and exactly what does that issuer claim to verify? |
| Condition | What is the jersey’s condition, and is any visible wear tied to documented use? |
These checks help distinguish a stronger documented claim from a weaker one, but they do not produce a universal price formula. The available official sources do not establish a standard premium for game-worn over game-issued jerseys; value depends on the item and the evidence supporting its specific claim.

Where documented jerseys may be offered
The NBA announced Sotheby’s as its official game-worn source: NBA–Sotheby’s partnership announcement. MLB says authenticated memorabilia is offered through MLB.com and retail partners, while clubs also operate team-authentics channels. Availability, program terms, and item records can change, so check the current listing and the issuer’s documentation before buying.
