The Federal Reserve says a deposited check is almost always delivered overnight to the paying bank and debited the next business day. Some merchants instead convert check details into an electronic transfer, which can debit the account the same day the merchant receives payment. The exact timing depends on the payment method, deposit timing, business days, and bank processing.
When does the clock start after you write a check?
Signing or handing over a check does not usually start the bank-processing clock. For an ordinary paper check, the key event is the recipient depositing or presenting it for payment. The Federal Reserve’s Check 21 FAQ says the check is almost always delivered overnight to the paying bank and debited from the checkwriter’s account the next business day.
That is the usual route, not a guarantee of an exact posting time. A bank may show a pending transaction before it appears as a completed ledger debit, and banks’ customer-facing displays can differ. Weekends, applicable holidays, deposit cut-off times, and the banks’ processing affect when the debit appears.
How paper checks and electronic check payments differ
| Payment route | Event that starts processing | Typical debit timing |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional paper check | Recipient deposits or presents the check | Usually the next business day after deposit, according to the Federal Reserve’s Check 21 FAQ |
| Check converted to an electronic fund transfer | Merchant receives payment and uses the check’s details to initiate an electronic transfer | Potentially the same day the merchant receives payment, according to the Federal Reserve |
Some merchants use the routing number, account number, and check number to initiate an electronic fund transfer (EFT) instead of processing the paper item as a conventional check. The Federal Reserve explains the same-day possibility in its check-conversion guidance. The CFPB’s Regulation E coverage includes one-time electronic transfers funded using check information, whether a check is provided in person or mailed to a merchant.

To identify how a particular payment was processed, check the merchant’s receipt or notice and your bank’s transaction details. Writing a check alone does not reveal whether the merchant used paper collection or an electronic debit.
Your debit date is not the recipient’s funds-availability date
The writer’s account debit and the recipient’s ability to spend or withdraw the deposit are separate events. A recipient can have a hold on a deposited check even if the writer’s account has already been debited. The recipient’s bank controls when deposited funds become available, subject to federal rules and exceptions.

The CFPB’s check-deposit guidance says a check deposit is usually available in one or two business days, but the timing depends on the bank and circumstances. Some in-person deposits, including personal checks drawn on the same institution, generally must be available by the next business day. Longer holds can apply in situations such as new accounts, repeated overdrafts, certain ATM deposits, suspected fraud or uncollectible checks, emergencies, and large deposits.
For deposit-availability rules, the CFPB says revised thresholds took effect July 1, 2025, for five years. They are $275 as the minimum amount, $550 for cash withdrawals, and $6,725 each for the new-account amount and large-deposit threshold. These figures govern when funds may be available to the recipient; they do not determine when the checkwriter’s account is debited. See the CFPB’s Regulation CC threshold adjustment for the rule details.

Can a post-dated check be deducted before its date?
Yes. A future date written on a check does not necessarily prevent the recipient from depositing it early or the bank from paying it before that date. The CFPB says banks and credit unions generally do not have to wait until the date written on a post-dated check. State law may provide protections if the bank receives valid notice, so contact your bank and provide written notice with reasonable lead time if you need to address an early-presentment risk. The CFPB explains this in its post-dated check guidance.

- Keep enough money in the account to cover the check once you give it to the recipient; do not rely on a multi-day float.
- Check your bank’s transaction list and account agreement for its posting and pending-transaction practices.
- If paying a merchant, review the receipt or notice to see whether the payment was processed electronically.
- If you wrote a post-dated check, contact your bank about the notice and timing it recognizes rather than assuming the written date will delay payment.
The Federal Reserve advises checkwriters to make sure the checking account has enough money to cover a check before writing it. Its Check 21 FAQ also notes that most checks collected through Reserve Bank services are collected and settled within one business day; that describes interbank collection through that service, not a promise about every account’s visible posting time.
