The top price in New Atlas’s published ranking was $128,700 for a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle used as Herbie, sold at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach in April 2018. But that ranking is no longer a reliable all-time top 50: Hagerty’s 2026 search-result auction data reports a $168,000 sale for a 1956 Beetle in August 2026, a higher figure that should be confirmed against the underlying lot before it is treated as the definitive record.
How to read this ranking
The figures below are reported auction results from New Atlas’s historical list, not current appraisals or inflation-adjusted prices. They are useful for seeing which individual Beetles drew exceptional bids, but they do not establish a present-day top 50. Auction houses may also report prices on different bases; check whether buyer’s premium is included before comparing results. Finarte, for example, explicitly says its displayed sold price includes the premium.
New Atlas’s list contains 50 entries. The available verified details support the first 12 below; they do not support reproducing the remaining 38 with accurate lot, venue, and price information.

New Atlas reports that the “Invisible Driver” car had sold on eBay for $55,250 about a year earlier. The later Bonhams result is a different sale context and venue, so the two figures alone do not prove the car appreciated.

What is the highest reported Beetle sale?
There is an important date qualification. New Atlas’s historical leader is the $128,700 Herbie car sold in 2018. Hagerty’s 2026 auction-history search data reports a $168,000 sale for a 1956 Beetle in August 2026, which would exceed that amount. Because Hagerty’s page redirected and the underlying lot could not be checked, treat the newer result as a lead requiring lot-level confirmation, not a settled replacement record. Hagerty’s search result also reports a $94,500 high sale for a 1955 Beetle over the preceding three years; that is a separate model-year result, not a ranking of every Beetle sale.
Why did some Beetles sell for six figures?
Film identity and provenance
A car recognized as a Herbie movie vehicle carries a story that an ordinary production Beetle does not. The 2018 Herbie result and the “Invisible Driver” stunt car’s 2015 sale show how entertainment provenance can attract attention. That does not mean every movie-associated car will command a particular premium; the specific identity and evidence behind it matter.

Collection history and auction audience
The 1960 Beetle from Jerry Seinfeld’s collection sold for $121,000 in 2016, against a reported estimate of $35,000 to $55,000. Supercars.net’s contemporaneous auction summary called it a world auction record for a Beetle at the time. That description is historical: it does not make the 2016 result the present record. A known collection, specialist venue, and bidders competing for a distinctive lot can shape one sale without establishing typical market value.
Body style, age, condition, and originality
Early examples and cabriolets recur among the high entries, including Karmann-built cars. The pattern is descriptive of this ranking, not proof that age or body style guarantees a higher price. New Atlas also notes low-mileage and well-preserved cars elsewhere in its list, but these exceptional results do not isolate the price contribution of mileage, originality, or condition.

What these prices can—and cannot—tell a buyer
A completed auction records what a particular buyer paid for a particular car on a particular date, under that auction’s terms. It is not a price guide for an ordinary Beetle. To compare two sale results meaningfully, check the model year and body style, documented provenance, originality and condition, mileage, sale venue and date, and whether the reported amount includes buyer’s premium. Even after those checks, an outlier tied to a film or famous collection should not be treated as a likely sale price for a car without comparable history.
For a current record claim, confirm the auction house’s lot page and final-sale terms, then compare its stated price basis with the older result. Until the reported August 2026 Hagerty result is verified at lot level, the defensible wording is that it appears to overtake the older published ranking, not that it conclusively establishes the all-time leader.
