Tesla’s April 2024 recall covers 3,878 potentially involved 2024 Cybertrucks because a loose accelerator pedal pad could become trapped in trim and affect pedal operation. The repair—inspection and, if needed, rework or replacement of the accelerator pedal assembly—is free through Tesla. Check your VIN with Tesla or NHTSA to find out whether your vehicle is affected and whether the recall repair is complete.

What the Cybertruck recall covers

NHTSA recall 24V-276 concerns 3,878 potentially involved model year 2024 Cybertrucks, with a 100% estimated defect rate in that recall population. That estimate describes the vehicles included in the filing; it does not mean 3,878 vehicles were reported to have experienced a trapped pedal. The stated build window is November 13, 2023, through April 4, 2024. Build date alone does not establish a vehicle’s current recall status: check its VIN.

The recall is listed by NHTSA as “Unintended Acceleration from Trapped Pedal.” NHTSA warned that “A trapped accelerator pedal can cause the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash.” NHTSA’s April 18, 2024 acknowledgment identifies campaign 24V-276 and says Tesla would repair or replace the pedal assembly without charge.

What caused the pedal problem

Tesla reported that an unapproved process change used soap lubricant to help assemble the pedal pad onto the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced the pad’s retention, so it could dislodge and become trapped in trim above the pedal. The concern was that the trapped pad could affect pedal operation—not that the pedal was documented as stuck at full throttle. Tesla’s account appears in its Part 573 Safety Recall Report.

Tesla’s filing also states that applying the brake cuts drive torque even if both pedals are pressed, and that continued brake application brings the vehicle to a stop. That is information from the filing, not a reason to leave the recall unrepaired.

How to check whether your Cybertruck is affected

  1. Find your VIN. Use the vehicle identification number shown on your vehicle documents or on the vehicle.
  2. Check Tesla’s recall page. Open Tesla’s Cybertruck Accelerator Pedal Trim Recall support page and follow its vehicle-status guidance.
  3. Check NHTSA’s recall lookup. Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s official recall search to see whether an open recall is recorded for that vehicle.
  4. Confirm the repair record. If a lookup shows the recall, or you are unsure whether a repair was completed, contact Tesla and ask it to verify the vehicle-specific status and arrange service if needed.

Do not infer present-day status from the build window or from the fact that the vehicle has been driven without an incident. The vehicle-specific lookup is the practical way to determine eligibility and whether the repair is recorded as complete.

What Tesla’s free remedy involves

Tesla’s stated remedy is to rework or replace the accelerator pedal assembly to ensure adequate retention. Its April 18, 2024 service bulletin describes an inspection followed by securing the pad with a rivet or replacing the assembly. The bulletin lists dedicated tooling, including a drilling jig, and warns against attempting the procedure without that jig. This is service work, not a DIY repair. Arrange it through Tesla rather than buying a pedal, rivet, or repair kit.

The official documents describe the remedy as free of charge. Tesla’s service bulletin SB-24-33-003 provides the service procedure; owners should use Tesla to confirm how to schedule the vehicle-specific repair.

What Tesla reported about incidents and the recall timeline

As of April 15, 2024, Tesla said it was not aware of any collisions, injuries, or deaths relating to the condition. That is a dated statement in Tesla’s filing, not a current all-time incident count.

Tesla reported receiving a customer claim on March 31, 2024, and a second on April 3. Tesla Engineering reviewed logs on April 2 and later examined images confirming the first condition. After additional testing, Tesla decided on April 12 to voluntarily recall the affected vehicles. It submitted its report to NHTSA on April 17, 2024; NHTSA acknowledged the recall on April 18.
