How to Fix Spotify Downloads That Won’t Play Offline

Start by confirming the download finished on the device you’re using. Then check eligibility, Offline Mode, storage, and app status before considering a reinstall, which removes downloads.

If a Spotify download will not play offline, first confirm it finished downloading on the device you are using. Then check account eligibility, Offline Mode, storage, and app status—in that order. Most checks do not erase downloads; reinstalling does, so save it for last.

1. Confirm the download finished on this device

Connect to the internet if you can, then open the album, playlist, or podcast in Spotify. Check its download status: a completed-download indicator is different from an item still downloading or waiting for an offline-sync update. If it has not finished, stay connected and let it complete. Spotify’s Listen offline guide explains the download indicators and status.

Spotify says individual songs cannot be downloaded directly. On mobile or desktop, add a song to a playlist and download the playlist instead.

2. Check your account and device limits

Download eligibility depends on both the content type and your plan. Spotify’s current guidance, checked on October 4, 2026, says Premium accounts can download albums, playlists, and podcasts; free accounts can download podcasts. The same guidance says you must go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads. Downloads are limited to up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices. If you exceed the device limit, Spotify says it removes downloads from the least recently used device. See Spotify’s offline-listening rules.

3. Check Offline Mode and Spotify’s basic app state

Spotify normally plays completed downloads automatically when internet access is lost. Offline Mode is optional: it makes Spotify play only downloaded items, so anything not downloaded appears unavailable or grayed out. On mobile or tablet, find the setting under Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. Desktop controls differ; use the Mac- or Windows-specific directions in Spotify’s Listen offline guide.

If the item is confirmed downloaded but still will not play, restart Spotify and check for an app update. These are reversible checks and do not require removing your downloads.

4. Check free space, cache, and storage cleaners

Spotify recommends at least 1GB of free device memory. Its storage can contain both cache and downloaded content, so low available space can interfere with downloads or app behavior. Check the device’s free storage, then, if needed, clear Spotify’s cache through the app’s Storage setting. Clearing cache is not the same as uninstalling Spotify.

Temporarily turn off cache-clearing or battery-saving apps while troubleshooting; Spotify lists these as possible causes of download problems. On Android, if Spotify stores downloads on an external SD card, make sure the card is accessible and working. Spotify identifies a faulty SD card as one reason downloads may disappear and provides instructions for selecting a card as the download location in its storage information.

5. Determine whether it is a connection problem or local playback problem

If the download is incomplete, or Spotify needs to refresh account or download status, the device must connect to the internet. Try another app or open a web page. If those fail too, investigate Wi-Fi or mobile data, the router, network restrictions, or a firewall. Spotify’s offline troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether other apps or pages can connect.

If other apps work and the track is already fully downloaded, focus on Spotify and the device rather than buying or replacing network equipment. For a Spotify-only issue, continue with the app checks above and the device-specific checks below.

6. Escalate without losing downloads

Spotify’s general playback guidance includes restarting or updating the app, updating the device operating system, closing unused apps, clearing cache, and testing another device or the web player to help identify a device-specific problem. See Spotify not playing.

Use reinstalling only after the less disruptive checks. Reinstalling removes Spotify downloads, which you will need to download again afterward; Spotify states this in its reinstall instructions. If the problem occurs on only one device, check that it is supported, has enough free memory, and—on desktop—is not being blocked by a firewall. On Android, also check SD-card access. Spotify notes that the device manufacturer may need to help with further device troubleshooting.
